A man watching Fourth of July fireworks was injured when he was struck by a falling bullet.
Pinellas deputies say Richard John Smeraldo was watching fireworks with his wife and friends near the shoreline at the Safety Harbor Marina when something struck him in the face.
Smeraldo at first thought he was struck by a rock, until a friend found the bullet on the blanket next to her.
Smeraldo was taken to Mease Countryside Hospital, and was released after receiving stitches. Investigators say the bullet apparently went through the bill of Smeraldo's cap, into the bridge of his nose. From there it went out his right nostril, through the upper portion of his bottom lip and exited through his lower chin. |

A Florida judge today set a $1 million bond for George Zimmerman, who is charged with killing Trayvon Martin, saying he set the substantially higher bail amount out of concern that Zimmerman might try to flee the country.
USA TODAY's Yamiche Alcindor reports that Circuit Court Judge Kenneth Lester ordered that Zimmerman remain in Seminole County and submit to electronic monitoring at his own expense. ...
"Under any definition, the defendant has flaunted the system," the judge wrote.
Submitter's comment: Under any definition, Judge Lester is semiliterate. The word he was searching for is "flouted." I hope his knowledge of the law is greater than his knowledge of the English language. |

As the national eye has turned toward more killings that are justified using “Stand Your Ground” laws, economists and researchers are asking a deeper question: how indicative are these high profile homicides of larger trends in crime? More specifically, does implementing a Stand Your Ground law actually increase the homicide rate? The answer is, sadly, yes – enacting laws that protect people who kill others in the name of self-defense does seem to increase the number of homicides in a given state. |

Firearms sales are on fire again in the U.S., with most of the credit going to citizens stocking up now on fears that the Second Amendment will become a target if President Obama is reelected. Then there’s always the desire to defend oneself against the threat of violence, particularly by extremist groups of whatever persuasion.
Naturally, this gets me thinking about what stocks might benefit from such a notable trend. The obvious choices are gun manufacturers. Looks like that’s been the way to go. |

Currently, the plan is to have the treaty done by the end of July, which means we could head into August looking down the barrel of international gun control. Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS) has introduced legislation to cut any consideration of ratification off at the pass. His bill, S-2205, is titled the “Second Amendment Sovereignty Act of 2012” and is one which every freedom-loving citizen needs to urge their Senators to support. |

Aposhian said his group will conduct tests to determine if the steel-jacketed bullet theory is true. If there are limits, "we want to make sure it is not knee-jerk legislation to ban guns or ammunition," he said. "If it turns out the problem is with a few types of rounds, we will not be an apologist for them."
There is no need for such tests, Utah state fire marshal Brent Halladay said. With steel bullets, "you might as well just go up there and strike a match," he said.
Ed.: Read as 'we don't need any evidence, my unsubstantiated opinion is enough' said Halladay. |

It’s really a you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours type of deal. The ACA gets a heavy-hitting sponsor who can help support their message, and Remington can get its name out there to people in the market for a new gun. |

Google is censuring information on guns and other products from Google Shopping. Sure, we know they once gave in to the Chinese government, but why are they censoring products used for self-protection by America’s gun owners?
Google announced this new policy on May 31. Now firearms manufacturers and others are pointing out Google’s hypocrisy. Meanwhile, the media has mostly ignored the story. |

Google's decision to make its new Google Shopping platform a "no-gun zone" has merchants, advertisers, shoppers and Second Amendment advocates contemplating a switch to using Bing.com as their primary search engine.
"The company’s new, anti-gun policy has rightly caused firearms owners to reconsider having Google be their search engine of choice," writes Larry Keane of the National Shooting Sports Foundation in a July 3 Ammoland.com blog. "According to reports, the search engine Bing.com, for example, currently does not block firearms from appearing in shopping results."

Google’s latest policy change covering its online shopping center has Second Amendment groups up in arms, and has stirred up the historically tense relationship between Google and the political right.
The search engine giant announced at the end of May that it would change how it lists certain items in search results through Google Shopping. The policy change included a prohibition on listing sites that promote and facilitate weapons sales — a move Google said it made in order to “comply with local laws and regulations.” |
