Senate Bill 719A has been scheduled for a House floor vote today. SB 719A was passed out of committee on Monday without a public hearing and with only one hour notice of the work session. It's imperative that you contact your state Representative immediately and urge them to oppose SB 719A!
Based on a California law enacted in 2014, SB 719A would create a so-called “Extreme Risk Protection Order” (ERPO) that could be obtained by a law enforcement officer, family member, or household member in an ex parte hearing to deprive someone of their Second Amendment rights without due process of the law. |

Johnson County Prosecutor Brad Cooper said the video, which was taken on a hidden camera in Keller’s yard, was a key piece of evidence used to make his decision on the case.
“We watched every bit of it back and forth,” said Cooper. “And pretty much uniformly between myself and all my deputy prosecutors and the investigators involved it looked like a clear case of self-defense on the part of Mr. Keller.”
Indiana law states that a person is not required to retreat before pulling the trigger in self-defense and shooting is justified if the shooter reasonably believes it is necessary to prevent serious bodily injury. |

But while these people might or might not be dolts, it’s not because they can’t identify historical documents from 140-character snippets.
“I Tweeted a VERY dumb comment,” one guy wrote. “But ask yourselves; if read to the average American, would they know that you were reading the [Declaration of Independence]?” For better or worse, this is a fair point.
The Declaration of Independence, viewed without context, is deeply weird — a long screed against an unnamed royal figure, punctuated with unfortunate language regarding indigenous people. |

The Butterfield Trail Friends of NRA announces its 25th annual fundraising banquet and auction at 6 p.m., Friday, July 21, 2017, at the Elks Lodge, 3000 Elks Dr., Las Cruces, NM 88007.
The banquet aims to safeguard the Second Amendment and raise funds for local shooting sports activities, said Committee Chair Michelle Stecher. Fifty percent of the proceeds raised at the banquet will benefit the National Rifle Association. |

Still, no conservative can deny what Trump found for them in Boulder, Colorado.
Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch is a gift that may keep giving to the conservative cause for the next 40 years.
Rulings last week remove any doubt Gorsuch is the staunchly conservative “originalist” jurist Trump promised while stumping on the campaign trail.
The Gazette’s editorial board grilled Trump last July to determine whether he was serious about nominating judges only from a list approved by the center-right Federalist Society. Trump promised that was his plan and said it was “the most important issue in the race.” |

Indianapolis Metropolitan police are investigating a fatal shooting from Thursday night on the north side, Fox59 reported.
Police responded to the 200 block of W. 38th St. before 5:50 p.m. on a report of a serious shooting.
Officers found a male in his 20s suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to Eskenazi Hospital, where he later died.
...
Police recovered two firearms at the scene. The man who turned himself in told investigators that he was defending himself during the confrontation and cooperated with investigators. The man was released after detectives consulted with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office. |

Perceiving you have been shown “disrespect” isn’t enough to use deadly force, another professor states.
“In no state, including stand your ground states, is it permissible to use deadly force against someone who merely insults you, or looks at you aggressively. Even if the person threatens to punch you, using deadly force in response would usually be disproportionate, although it would depend on the facts,” says Christopher Slobogin, who holds the Milton R. Underwood Chair in law and is director of the Criminal Justice Program at Vanderbilt University.
The legal right to self-defense doesn’t absolve people from all liability related to an incident. |

Families Against Mandatory Minimums and public defenders argue that Florida's stiff mandatory minimum sentences for aggravated assault and battery can make the prospect of going to trial and arguing self-defense an extremely risky proposition.
"We have a system right now where the deck is already stacked severely against defendants who claim self-defense," Newburn says. "When you're facing a 20-year mandatory minimum it's bad enough. When you add, on top of that, having to prove your innocence at an immunity hearing and giving the prosecution access to all the evidence you'd be presenting at trial, that makes this already severe burden intolerable." |

Main Street in Cambridge is now home to a firearm and self-defense store.
Center Mass Firearms opened on May 22. It is located at 145 Main St. S. in Cambridge, next to the Farm Bureau office.
Owner Kyle Nelson got into the firearms and self-defense trade after taking a gunsmithing course through Penn Foster Career School. Prior to opening his storefront, Nelson operated his business out of his home in Mora.

A new Texas law will soon make it legal for anyone to walk down the street carrying a sword or even a machete.
House Bill 1935 was recently signed into law, and come September, long knives, daggers and even spears can legally be taken into public.
The author of the bill, Representative John Frullo said its main purpose is to simplify the laws pertaining to knives and to limit their restrictions.
“Accidents happen and people misuse things. So any of that can apply to a knife just as well as it could to a gun," said Mike Clark with Collectors Firearms. |

Organizers behind January's Women's March are planning a new protest this month against the National Rifle Association (NRA).
The protest will be held in front of the NRA headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia, on July 14 and 15.
It is apparently in response to a recent NRA ad that the march organizers allege encourages people to arm themselves against violent anti-Trump and anti-Second Amendment protesters. |

While speaking about the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, Arrington said,
The reciprocity bill, I think, is huge for our Second Amendment rights, and I think you’ll see that on the House floor soon.
When Hasty asked Arrington if he thought the bill might face more uncertainty from the Senate, Arrington replied, “Unfortunately, everything, including [reciprocity] is going to be shakier in the Senate, but we’re definitely going to get it out of the House.” |

The mendacity of anti-gun academics apparently knows no bounds. A couple of weeks ago notorious anti-gun academic and law professor John Donohue of Stanford University produced another in a long list of self-serving screeds disparaging the rights and lives of law-abiding citizens who choose to carry concealed weapons. Donohue has published numerous anti-gun articles and op-eds in years past, and ups the ante with a “synthetic control” working paper that claims that his newest speculations have eliminated “any suggestion of benign effects on crime from the adoption of RTC laws and consistently shown evidence that RTC [Right to Carry] laws increase murder and/or overall violent crime.” |

If you’re getting the impression that armed defense around home is complex beyond what any initial appraisal might have indicated, we’re in emphatic agreement. In an odd way, being out and about has both rules/laws and decorum that narrow “cans” and “can’ts” in a way that just being around the house may not. Slathered over that are the higher stakes of any engagement at home: The well-being of proximate family is worry numero uno, but the increased difficulty of flight, safe-but-accessible firearms and the tendency to go Condition White are high on the list too. |
