Civil Liberties After 9/11

"The charge that our civil liberties are being systematically dismantled must be taken seriously. America has, in the past, overreacted to perceived security threats; the Palmer raids after World War I and the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II are the most notorious examples. Are we once again jeopardizing the liberties of all Americans while also inflicting particular harm on Muslims in our midst?" ...

"There is no denying the rhetorical force of these accusations, or the success with which they have been used by the Left as a rallying cry against President Bush. What is less clear is their validity, not just on their own terms but in relation to the radically altered domestic security situation we have faced since the attacks of 9/11. There may be a case to be made concerning the measures we have taken so far; but it is not the one presented by the critics."

" 'The gun lobby has worked hard to convince Americans that they need guns in their homes for protection. As a result, too many parents have guns in their homes because they believe they will be safer. The reality is they're putting their families, their friends, their neighbors and, as this near tragedy so vividly shows, even innocent people outside the home at greater risk of gun violence,' said David Matos, Board Chair of Ceasefire NJ."

"Matos continued: 'For the sad fact is, that no matter the care parents take to store their guns, it is impossible to store them so that clever and determined young people cannot get their hands on them. So, the only solution is to keep guns out of homes.' "

-------
So instead of teaching children personal accountability and responsible gun ownership, simply disarm their families and leave them at the mercy of armed criminals. Does this paranoiac actually believe that "clever and determined" young people won't get their hands on firearms if their homes are rendered defenseless?

"About 150 South Africans will be killed by guns during the five days (July 7-11) that United Nations member states meet in New York to discuss their progress in curbing the proliferation of small arms, a spokesperson said on Monday."

-------
Notice: no mention of armed criminals killing people with guns - just the guns themselves. Also no mention of the at least 32,247 lives that could be saved in the US in the same time period. Additionally the figure cited in the article apparently also includes those shot by police or potential victims protecting themselves.
