"The attack on Michael Moore's new documentary, "Fahrenheit 9/11," shows that free speech has come under an unprecedented assault in America, thanks to the campaign finance law passed by Congress last year, says Libertarian presidential candidate Michael Badnarik.

"'The Constitution is on fire -- a fire that was set when Democrats and Republicans passed their so-called campaign finance reform law,' says Badnarik, who was nominated by the party on May 30. 'The attempt to gag Michael Moore demonstrates that McCain-Feingold was just an excuse to outlaw political criticism.'" ...

... "Approximately 35,000 people will be killed this year by gun violence in this nation. That is nearly 40 times more people than will be killed in Canada and nearly 1,000 times more people than will be killed in Japan. The United States has the highest rate of deaths by gun violence than all the industrialized nations. There are over 222 million firearms in the United States. 30,708 people died from firearm injuries in 1998. There are 35 times more firearms in the U.S. than in Canada."

"In the United Kingdom handguns are outlawed entirely. Police officers do not even carry guns. San Francisco police say they are so outgunned in some parts of town that they want to carry assault-style weapons for self-defense.

So far this year, there have been 53 homicides in the city -- 12 more than last year.

"It's necessary to have the additional firepower, or at least the potential for additional firepower, when we come upon these situations where these criminals seem to have no problem getting their hands on these weapons," said Gary Delagnes of the Police Officers Association.

Police in San Jose already have the assault-style guns. Officers undergo special training to use the weapons, which the department says are brought out only in specific situations.

KABA notes the following:

CA has had an "assault weapon" ban that is stricter than the federal law, for several years longer than the federal law.

According to Brady et al., "the sole purpose of these guns to kill the most number of people in the shortest amount of time." So why do cops want them?

"Thanks to a new Wyoming law, George Lucas has a shot at getting his gun rights back."

"When the Lander man was convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence six years ago, he permanently lost his right to possess a firearm, in accordance with the federal Brady gun control law."

"But Lucas could have that right restored under a new law whose primary sponsor was state Sen. Cale Case, a Republican contender for the U.S. House seat held by Barbara Cubin, R-Wyo." ...

"Case said the new law could be used only by first-time offenders who have successfully served out their sentence and have not been in trouble with the law in the year following the completion of their sentence." ...

KABA Note: Many people have been caught up by this ex post facto law and while we applaud any limits upon it, we would rather see the whole thing thrown out.

"A bill currently before Congress may make semi-automatic rifles such as the SKS illegal." ...

"The United States already has a law that bans fully automatic weapons. Congress is looking to add semi-automatic weapons to the ban as well."

"Brad Rezek, 24, of Chelsea believes the ban would be a good idea."

"'(Semi-automatic rifles) are overkill for personal protection and definitely overkill for hunting,' Rezek said. 'When you take away those two reasons, why would a person need that type of gun?'"

"Not everyone agrees with this point of view, however."

Cpl. Bobby Kilgore has been with the Opelika Police Department since 1990. ..."

"He said the weapons aren’t inherently dangerous, but the person using the gun is a potential threat. He said Opelika police officers have come across semi-automatic weapons occasionally, but it’s more of a rarity. Most people carry hand guns because they’re easily concealed." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of an American... The unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state government, but, where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people. — Tench Coxe, Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 1788.
