"The International Action Network on Small Arms estimates that at least 1,000 people die daily from gunshots across the world, including in cities like Nairobi where armed robberies have become common."

"About 2 million people have died since the UN first met in 2001 to discuss controlling the global small arms trade." ...

"And despite the high number of guns in the world -estimated at a gun for every 10 people- at least 8 million guns are manufactured every year and sold across the world, including in Kenya's often troubled North Rift, North Eastern region."

-------
Question: How many of these people are killed by their own governments and their agents?

After reading the article on law enforcement personnel flying armed ("Number of armed passengers unknown," July 2) and its views against our "castle law," it seems The Clarion-Ledger is becoming more anti-gun each day.

One would think that with the level of lawlessness in Jackson, responsible citizens would be encouraged to arm themselves. Criminals will definitely think twice before attacking a person who is likely carrying a weapon.

"New hunters in Massachusetts will have to complete a hunter education course before heading for the woods, under a bill signed into law yesterday by Gov. Mittt Romney."

"But thousands of experienced sportsmen in the state won't have to take the mandatory courses to keep their hunting licenses next January, according to the legislation."

"The new law, which sportsmen's advocates have supported, would allow people who obtained their hunting license between 1998 and this year to continue hunting without taking the hunter safety course."

"On a day when Philadelphia's spiraling gun violence claimed the lives of a teenager and two men in their 20s, State Attorney General Thomas Corbett and State Sen. Vincent Fumo (D., Phila.) yesterday announced the formation of a task force that they said would work to curb the sale and possession of illegal firearms in the city."

"Though specifics of the effort have yet to be worked out - and will probably be kept confidential once they are - Fumo said the $5 million state appropriation would be used 'to create an enforcement unit whose sole responsibility is the prevention of illegal guns' getting into the wrong hands.'"

"Corbett, who admitted that the initiative was 'new territory' for his office, said he would work with the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office and the Philadelphia Police Department to develop a strategy over the next few months."

"The nation’s most high profile gun-control organization set its sites last week on Rep. Howard Coble, who chairs the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security. The Republican congressman from Greensboro is the sponsor of federal legislation that would relax regulation on gun merchants by giving dealers whose licenses have been revoked two months to liquidate their inventory and greater ability to appeal enforcement actions by federal agencies."

"The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence released a report, Death Valley: Profile of a Rogue Gun Dealer, on June 29 that drew critical attention to the Coble bill, which is entitled 'Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Modernization and Reform Act of 2006.' The Brady Center report charges that the proposed law 'would gut ATF’s ability to revoke corrupt gun dealers’ firearms licenses."

Recently released documents include a report by one of the Columbine killers, Eric Harris. Smoking Gun has the goods.

"...In grading the Harris report, a copy of which you'll find below, a Columbine teacher judged it 'thorough & logical' and gave the paper a 69 out of 75. Noting that, 'a school is no place for a gun,' Harris concluded that the use of metal detectors and an increased police presence 'are a great start to fight against guns in school.'"

"Childproof trigger locks on handguns should rank somewhere near mom and apple pie as a measure of a wholesome dedication to life."

"But not in the U.S. House of Representatives, where the gun lobby cowed lawmakers into actually barring the use of federal funds to enforce an existing law that requires child trigger locks to be sold with all handguns. This late-night treachery just before the July 4 recess means that federal agents will not have the resources to confront one of the deadliest facts of American family life: 10 young people die each day in gun homicides, suicides and accidents."

"Well, if the NYT will somehow argue that if even one life is saved by a trigger lock, a law mandating that taxpayer dollars pay for them is worth it..."

"...imagine how many lives will be saved if the homeowner doesn't have to find the key, fumble with a trigger lock and load the weapon during a home invasion! I seriously doubt any self-respecting home invader will wait for you to make your tool of self defense operable. More likely than not, he'll either shoot you, beat you, tie you up, rape your wife and steal your stuff. If that's what the New York Times wants for Americans, its staff may want to move to a nation that is more in line with its sadistic views. May I suggest North Korea or China?"

"A Montana gun-kit dealer's home was raided by FBI, BATF, and Canadian law enforcement agents, after he gave 'subversive' literature to his local Sheriff, according to a story posted on an online news site."

"After distributing his handouts to the local Sheriff, Richard Celata reportedly got a phone call asking him to 'come in' for a meeting, scheduled the day after the local elections. When Celata arrived at the office, he found the place half-full of BATF and FBI agents, who handed him a warrant to search his home. However, Celata noticed the warrant contained 'no signed affidavit,' and was thus invalid. He was told the affidavit though it did exist, was 'secret and sealed by the court.'"

"Mayor Joseph Delfino and the Common Council have proposed a local ordinance Introductory No. 3 of 2006, which would require any person who sells, possesses or transports any air pistol or air rifle to obtain a license and pay an annual fee in the City of White Plains. Violators would be guilty of a misdemeanor and may have to pay a fine or serve jail time. A public hearing has been scheduled for August 7 at 7:30pm at the Council Chambers on 255 Main Street, White Plains."

"What bothers me about this is that last year one of the people running for White Plains City Council was a member of NRA. He called me in response to the candidate questionnaire I sent him. He didn’t want to return the questionnaire because he didn’t think guns were an issue he’d have to deal with and didn’t want people to know he was a member of NRA. Ok, fine by me, we won’t endorse you. He lost the election."

"It seemed like a common-sense, if unremarkable approach, to problems faced by hunters, anglers, hikers and birders."

"'I expect that the governor's neck may soon be in traction,' says ISRA-PVF spokesman, Richard Pearson. 'He's been switching faces so fast and furious this week, something just has to give.'"

"Pearson's comments come at the end of a week when Gov. Blagojevich toured the state -- flip-flopping his way from one campaign stop to the next."

"On July 4th, Blagojevich was deep in Republican territory -- parading in suburban Downers Grove. On Thursday, he was way down south in Sparta, cutting the ribbon to a new, multimillion dollar state owned rifle range. This coming Saturday, Blagojevich will be in the friendly confines of Chicago's Mart Plaza to talk gun control with the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP). No matter where he stops along the way, the governor is quick to flash his Cheshire cat grin and reach deep into his pocketful of promises."

"On Saturday, Project Crime will be collecting guns at the Gateway Mall - with no questions asked."

"Those who bring the guns in will receive $50 in exchange for the weapon as a part of the gun buy-back program."

"Project Crime has a goal of collecting 1,000 guns total, with the aim of getting weapons off the streets and stopping the violence."

-------
Couple of questions:

1 - How do you "buy back" something you never owned in the first place?

2 - Where are the funds to pay for turned in firearms coming from?

Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it. — RONALD REAGAN (1986)
