The Marlin 336 was introduced to enthusiasts in 1948, although the overall design was a familiar one with lever-action fans. It’s a direct descendant of the company’s Model 1893, which went out of production in 1936 after more than 40 years. Unlike its predecessor, though, its breech bolt is rounded and stronger, and the mainspring and trigger springs are coil instead of flat. The gun has a variety of other improved features that, cumulatively, continue to make it a perennial contender for the title of best-selling lever-action rifle to this day. In fact, last year it was the third-most-popular in that category among retailers using the services of GunBroker.com.

The .300 Winchester Magnum descended from the legendary .375 H&H cartridge, which after many successful hunts in Africa, developed a reputation for being capable of taking every game animal on the entire continent. Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, the .300 Win Mag has a reputation of being able to take any game animal in North America. In most cases, the .300 Win Mag enjoys a velocity advantage of nearly 300 feet per second over the .30-06, a cartridge that lives up to its heritage and name.

It’s not the “sanctuary” status a local Second Amendment group was hoping would be declared, but the Floyd County Commissioners approved a resolution Tuesday citing their support for governing authorities and the Constitution. Titled the Constitutional Assurance Resolution, the measure recognizes a “higher authority” and the commissioners inability to supersede existing laws and hierarchy. It also supports the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and state and national laws. |

Today, the House of Representatives will consider overriding Governor Roy Cooper’s veto of the Second Amendment Preservation Act. Gov. Cooper erroneously claimed that the bill will allow guns in schools and threatens the safety of students and teachers. Instead, it only applies to churches that operate schools and simply allows parishioners to carry when the schools are not in session if the church wishes to opt-in. Please contact your representative and ask them to override Gov. Cooper’s veto of HB 652. |

COVID-19's disruption of the legislative session, which ended last week, stalled efforts to pass NRA-backed House Bill 1215 by Rep. Shane Barnett (R-Greene, Perry & Wayne Cos.). This legislation would have added state agencies to the existing preemption statute which limits the authority of cities and counties to pass arbitrary restrictions on firearm possession and also would have provided citizens a remedy for challenging unlawful gun restrictions imposed by these entities. |

A loose coalition of gun control groups cried victory with a full-throated roar on Tuesday, claiming that Subway banned open carry due to their efforts. Sparked by images of individuals openly carrying firearms and an inert AT-4 anti-armor weapon in a North Carolina Subway restaurant in May, a number of small anti-gun organizations to include the Newtown Action Alliance and Guns Down America called on the sandwich chain to ban the practice.

As of July 1, firearms are prohibited in city-owned buildings, parks, recreational facilities and community facilities. This includes, but is not limited to: City Hall, community centers, the two Department of Social Services locations and all public parks. Richmond City Council passed the mayor’s ordinance to prohibit guns in city buildings and parks in July 2019. However, the prohibition did not go into effect until July 1, 2020 because the state only recently voted to give municipalities the power to limit guns in certain spaces.

The FBI processed a total of 3,931,607 records through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) in June, roughly 1.6 million more than the same month in 2019 and nearly 200,000 more than the previous highwater mark, set in March. After subtracting use of the system not associated with a firearm purchase, the number reflects the sale of nearly 2.4 million guns nationwide. The figures do not include transfers made to valid CCW permit holders in those regions of the country where a redundant background check is not required for their firearm purchases.

Continued from last month — Life is full of trade-offs and while the Walker and Dragoon revolvers had plenty of power, their 4-lb. plus weight made most shooters hesitate to carry one, much less a pair, all day and they were more than a little heavy for fast work from a holster — except for the outlaw Josie Wales and Lonesome Dove’s Gus McRae.

I was alone at the edge of the big woods. The temperature was just above freezing, slowly rotting the layer of snow blanketing the ground as a warm front had brought drizzle to the Midwest. The clash of warm air against cold, wet earth set the perfect stage for fog. As I settled against a tree to watch a remote field, visibility began to lower like a great gray theater curtain.
