"The Transportation Security Administration, created in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks on New York City and the Pentagon, continues to defy logic in its bureaucratic resistance to common-sense steps to improve on-board defenses of airliners."

"Hanson explained, 'There has been a lot of bad information floating around, particularly with regard to so-called 'home rule' powers. This is not unexpected in the first ninety days of a new law. "Governor Mitt Romney has signed into law a permanent assault weapons ban that he says will make it harder for criminals to get their hands on these guns."
"'Deadly assault weapons have no place in Massachusetts,' Romney said, at a bill signing ceremony on July 1 with legislators, sportsmen’s groups and gun safety advocates. 'These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people.'"
"Like the federal assault weapons ban, the state ban, put in place in 1998, was scheduled to expire in September. The new law ensures these deadly weapons, including AK-47s, UZIs and Mac-10 rifles, are permanently prohibited in Massachusetts no matter what happens on the federal level." ... -------

"With its recent purchase of new semiautomatic handguns and rifles, the Ashland Police Department has joined a growing number of suburban towns in switching over to higher-powered and more-precise weapons, a move officials say helps better prepare them for armed criminals and terrorist attacks."
"Last month, Ashland purchased a Glock .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun for each officer in the department, along with 10 Bushmaster A2-type carbine rifles. The department is currently training to use the weapons: Handgun training should be complete this month, and rifle training, which is more intensive, should be complete by the end of next month."
"'This is the wave in law enforcement,' said Police Chief Roy Melnick. 'Police departments should have the capability of meeting or exceeding the threats out there. Criminals are better-armed, and we need to be able to respond to their threats.'" -------

Two Colorado girls vacationing in Montana used a cell phone to call for help after finding themselves on a hillside infested with dozens of rattlesnakes.
Izzy Effler, 13, and Morgan Beadwell, 12, climbed a hill in Livingston to try to get cell phone reception.
However, while climbing, Izzy said a rattlesnake struck at her.
Morgan also reportedly stepped on a snake.
The girls then discovered that they were surrounded by six rattlers and used the phone to call for help, according to the report.
Brian Effler and his nephew eventually rescued the girls after shooting two of the snakes.
A rattlesnake trapper said he saw 25 to 30 snakes in the area.

"Like the Bush administration’s reaction following revelations of Iraqi prisoner abuse, some in the hunting community will undoubtedly dismiss the prairie dog 'hunts' described in our cover story this issue as the work of 'a few bad apples.' Perhaps so, but just as the events at Abu Ghraib are only one of the ugly faces of war, hunting, even when not conducted by beer-swilling slobs from pickup trucks, involves a great amount of killing, suffering and death. Regardless of how much spin we employ to legitimize it, war is hell and so is hunting."
"As with the highly questionable intelligence alleging Iraqi 9-11 involvement and weapons of mass-destruction that led us into war, hunting today continues on the strength of some long-debunked myths.
