"[A]t one point or another in our history, 'whatever the people wanted' included such things as segregation, subjugation of women, and slavery. Even today, it includes the War on Drugs, the War on Guns, and the War on Private Property. Democracy was something that our Founding Fathers opposed. That is why they established a system of government where representatives are elected by the people to use their own judgment in creating laws, and that men would be governed by the rule of law."

"Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., introduced legislation Tuesday to close major gaps in the federal firearms background check system that in a 30-month period allowed some 10,000 felons and others prohibited from gun ownership to obtain weapons."

" 'This legislation fixes a huge hole in our system,' McCain said in a statement, 'a hole that delays legitimate firearms purchases and allows criminals and other prohibited buyers to obtain guns.' "

"McCain said the hole is the 'faulty records of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).' "

"He cited a report issued by the Americans for Gun Safety in January that showed 'millions of records are missing from NICS' database.' The study showed that over a 30-month period, 10,000 criminals and others obtained a license without a full background check 'because the records couldn't be checked properly within the three days allowed by federal law.' "

"The bill was sponsored by McCain, Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, and Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass. Craig joked at a news conference that it was the 'odd quad,' referring to the fact that the sponsors came together on this legislation despite widely differing views on gun control."

"A self-described 'odd-quad' of senators urged the government Tuesday to strengthen its gun buyer instant background check system by requiring federal agencies to contribute to the system and states to computerize their criminal records."

"The bill, introduced by Democratic Sens. Charles Schumer of New York and Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, and Republican Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Larry Craig of Idaho, would require states and federal agencies to automate their records and add them to the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System."

"Background checks for prospective gun buyers have been required since February 1994 under the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act. More than 689,000 people have been denied a gun for failing a background check."

They are upset at him for eviscerating the Constitution since Sept. 11 by sending the PATRIOT Act and other anti-terrorist legislation to the Hill, loosening strictures on the FBI imposed by Congress and some of his predecessors years ago, and being, shall we say, overzealous in his willingness to ignore liberty in the quest for security.
