"Parents with small children usually store firearms safely enough in the home, but that's not always the case when their kids are teens, U.S. researchers report."

"'It seems that parents are more concerned about gun safety when they have really young kids and aren't that concerned when they have older kids,' explained lead researcher Renee M. Johnson, a research fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston." ...

"Statistics show that about one-third of American households with children also contain guns ... 14 percent to 30 percent of people with guns keep at least one firearm fully loaded. In addition, about 43 percent store one gun in an unlocked place.

"I'm not an old-timer. OK, I am, sort of. I'm old enough that I learned to shoot with black iron sights, unadorned with white dots, lines or other gimmicks designed to draw the eyes into proper sight alignment. I thought the shooting industry had taken a major technological leap the first time I saw a red insert on a front sight coupled with a white line outlining the rear sight of my first Smith & Wesson Model 29. Those sights practically startled me under bright, sunny skies, which, incidentally, were exactly the conditions that rendered the need for a red front insert and white-outline rear sight unnecessary. I discovered ... that under dim light conditions the red insert pretty much faded into black when dusk settled in." ...

"We've become painfully aware lately of just how fragile life is, and how quickly an existence can change. Shreveport has experienced some sad moments as lives have been lost and families changed when things go wrong."

"District Attorney Paul Carmouche decided not to pursue charges, declaring it a justifiable homicide."

"But that wasn't the end of it."

"Whenever caught in the heat of a close-quarters battle, as a last resort, service members may draw for their side arm. For most U.S. military personnel, it will be the M-9 9 mm pistol – but that's not the case for the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit’s Deep Reconnaissance Platoon; they are still true to the renowned .45-caliber pistol."

"Like other Marine Expeditionary Units the 31st MEU's DRP carries the MEU SOC (Special Operations Capable) .45-caliber pistol, which is a specialized version of the classic Colt M-1911A1 frame, tailored particularly to offer the recon Marines with the stopping power required to help accomplish specific missions." ...

"Thanks to Dan Sayers dashcam video that his attorney received from the prosecutor of the incident is now published below."

"The video itself is suspect due to apparent editing. Moments into the response the responding vehicle siren stops, the tape jumps, the time stamp increments by 20-30 seconds, and the siren starts over again at an intersection. The engine is heard at high RPM while acceleration from a slower speed is apparent. What transpired during these crucial seconds is unknown, and a replacement copy of the dashcam tape is being sought." ...

"KIRO Team 7 Investigators tracked down Thong, who has not talked publicly about the incident until now."

"Halsne: 'It (the SPD report) says he 'held his gun to your face and rubbed your face against the ground with the other.' Did he have his gun up to your head?'"

"Thong: 'Yes, he did. He got his gun poking my head when it was down. He kept pointing his gun, like, poking, tapping my head. It hurt, you know. A gun is metal and my head is nothing but bone. He kept attacking it and said I lied.'"

"Halsne: 'He's got a loaded gun right to your head?'"

"Thong: 'I think it's loaded. He can blow my brains out that morning.'"

"'There were fights, bottles thrown, people shot,' said D.C. Assistant Police Chief Brian K. Jordan about a fracas outside a Northeast Washington music club Monday evening that ended with two juveniles shot, two beaten and three arrested. "... A retired Canadian military attache has an idea on how to bring peace to the middle east."

"Ex-military attache draws parallels to today's Mideast crisis with time he served there"

"To stop the killing in south Lebanon will take a military force powerful enough to subdue both sides of the conflict, says Bill McCullough, a retired Armed Forces colonel with extensive knowledge of the Middle East."

"Of course after you destroy the Israeli and Hezbollah you have to control those people."

"Here is where that Canadian compassion comes into play."

"David Garlock's letter to the editor "Granholm signing Self-Defense Act laughable," (SN 8/8), only demonstrates his profound ignorance. According to Garlock, those who agree with gun control are an 'elitist cabal of freedom haters.' This is what is laughable."

"Perhaps Garlock would prefer to live in a country where his is the only viewpoint that counts."

"If you haven't picked up on it yet, I am for gun control. Don't get me wrong — I'm not your average 'elitist freedom hater.' I grew up as part of a working-class family in rural Alabama with shotguns and rifles on a gun rack on the living room wall just above the TV." ...

"More jail space, more courtrooms and more cops won't win the crime war our public officials have declared, any more than peace rallies or preaching will."

"I'm not exactly sure anything will. A few simple laws restricting access to guns would help, but rare is the elected official, even in law enforcement, who will come out and add the gun lobby to his list of enemies."

"The myth that violence is the work of a 'criminal element' that scoffs at gun control reigns pretty much unchallenged even in the face of relentless evidence that a whole lot of early death results from hotheads and addicts having heat at their disposal when they lose a parking space or need faster cash than you can get with a mop." ...

Submitter's Note: How about the 'relentless evidence' that "Over 66% of murderers have long histories of violence against not only their enemies and other 'acquaintances,' but also against their relatives." "Young black men are shooting each other at record rates this summer, and for some leaders the way to stem the violence is to remove the weapons. After all, it's difficult to shoot someone if you can't get your hands on a gun."

"The call to disarm has a reasonable ring to it. But given the facts, the notion of disarming local drug lords borders on the absurd. Philly's badlands are awash in weapons. And to hint that wholesale disarmament is even possible is to engage in magical thinking."

... "Once again, the liberal members of the AJC editorial board focus on their interpretation of events. Blaming the crime rate in New York and other gun-restrictive cities, such as Washington, D.C., on legal gun laws in other areas is the anti-gun lobby's stock argument. They never suggest that the super-strict banning of weapons in these cities leads to higher crime rates in these cities." ...

Some are a likely target for criminals due to their line of work. Some recognize the innate right to self defense guaranteed by the U.S. and Ohio Constitutions.
