"It's truly amazing. You wouldn't think that something as controversial as gun control could fly through the House of Representatives, and then through a Senate committee without facing at least one recorded vote."

"But on Thursday of last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee passed the Senate version of the McCarthy bill by an unrecorded voice vote."

"The draft bill -- which is still unnumbered -- is being sponsored by the chairman of the committee, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT). The Brady expansion provisions in this bill are identical to the ones in the McCarthy bill and would easily deny thousands (if not millions) of law-abiding citizens their right to own firearms." ...

"In light of the sexual assualt and murders of the women of the Petit family at the hands of brutal home invaders who also happened to be repeat offenders, Keith C. Burris says, 'Time to admit the 'gun nuts' are right.':"

"What if the Second Amendment is for real? Is it possible that it should it be revered, just like the First Amendment?..."

"Is it possible that the Second Amendment is not a quaint and antiquated remnant of a world that will never return, but an idea as relevant and sound today as when it was written?"

Submitter's Note: This is a photo essay showing American gun owners, their families, pets and firearms, with narration and commentary.
The grammar of the title is puzzling, however. One doesn't know whether they mean One Nation, Under the Gun or One Nation, Under Gunned.

"There seems to be no end to the groups that take potshots at the National Rifle Association. It goes with the territory, I guess ..."

"Every once in a while, the shots aren't fired by anti-gun folks, but rather by a fledgling rival of the NRA ..." ...

"The newly formed Union Sportsmen's Alliance (USA) offers union members an 'alternative' to the NRA. The group claims the NRA is anti-union and that the NRA opposes political candidates that labor unions endorse."

"The movement is serious enough that Chris Cox, head of the NRA's legislative arm, has warned his membership in print that 'the USA is intended to lure the political allegiance of gun-owning union members away from the NRA and its political agenda.'" ...

"AZ Generally, by state law, you’re not allowed to carry a gun into a nuclear plant or hydroelectric dam area, or into a polling place on Election Day, or into any other "public establishment" where the host specifically bans guns, or into any establishment that serves booze. That last prohibition drew the ire of the 2005 Legislature, which passed a bill to allow people to "carry" in bars and restaurants that serve alcohol, but Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano vetoed it, with the support of the tavern owners. Other than that, Arizona is pretty loose with its gun regulations. If your town wants to pass tougher regs than the state has adopted, generally the state won’t allow it. More than 89,000 Arizonans have permits to carry ..." ...

"August is under way, and with it, the hunting seasons have started in some places. While we still have a couple of months to go here, things are under way in Alaska and Canada, where caribou season and other hunting have already started."

"Given the changes in place in airline travel, now is a good time to get in touch with air carriers and solve the logistics of how to transport hunting equipment without undue problems. ..."

"Most airlines have specific rules for transporting firearms. For example, Delta Airlines will accept firearms as checked luggage as long as they are in a locked, hard-sided case and the firearm is declared to the ticketing agent. Ammunition also has to be declared ..." ...

"The most memorable Valentine's Day gift I ever received was a black nylon fanny pack designed to hold a gun. For my live-in, gun-nut boyfriend, it was a grand romantic gesture and an encore, of sorts, to his Christmas present, a .22-caliber semiautomatic pistol. I had hoped for the new 'lady friendly' hammerless Smith & Wesson .38 revolver, but the fanny pack would have to do." ...

"Bob and Cal disagree about the effectiveness of gun-control laws, but they do see eye to eye on one thing: The Constitution allows for gun ownership."

"A proposal that Nevada teachers be allowed to carry concealed weapons garnered a lot of notoriety but little traction among state lawmakers this year. Now comes this idea: Give bonus pay to teachers - from kindergarten to college - who would be trained and armed as reserve school police officers."

"Faculty-turned-campus cops would supplement the thin ranks of campus police and be in position to respond quickly to campus emergencies, the two champions of the idea say."

"Others worry about allowing teachers to be put in that kind of position."

"The idea will be taken up at separate meetings this month by Nevada System of Higher Education regents and the State Board of Education." ...

"Attorneys for the city of Kennesaw, where residents are required by law to own and maintain a firearm, said Thursday they are asking local officials to throw out an ordinance that bans people from toting guns in city parks."

"The gun-in-parks ordinance violates state law ... said Stuart Sims, an attorney for the city of Kennesaw."

"He said the recommendation was made to comply with a Georgia law that stipulates only the state has the power to determine where guns may be carried or transported."

"The action by Kennesaw's attorneys came in response to a letter from firearms right organization GeorgiaCarry.org, which pointed out that the revised state law preempted the council's prohibition on guns in parks." ...

"Councilor-At-Large Chip Capraro suggested Tuesday night that the city set up a gun amnesty program to help prevent a repeat of the July 29 shooting death of a local teen."

"He asked City Manager Rich Rising to see if a program similar to the one held in Rochester over the weekend could be done here."

"The death of Elvin Cruz ... 10 days ago has prompted 5th Ward residents to tell city officials they're worried about violence in their neighborhood and that an increasing number of Geneva's young people have illegal guns."

"Capraro acknowledged that it may be naive to think an amnesty program could do some good, but said the situation is 'an immediate problem and puts us at risk for intended or unintended violence.'" ...

"A city hit hard by gun violence should not have gun sales at its back door, said Mayor Gavin Newsom, who is expected to announce today that The City is seeking state legislation to end gun shows at the Cow Palace."

"While the exhibition hall is technically located in Daly City, it is just blocks away from San Francisco’s Sunnydale Housing Project, one of many neighborhoods in The City plagued by gun violence."

"Although the gun shows are legal, Newsom said numerous illegal gun transactions occur in the parking lot during the show, which will take place Saturday and Sunday. Another gun show is scheduled in November."

"Well it appears that the US Department of Justice, which the ATF serves under, has nearly fallen off the map with only 3 hits to our website at 10am. This from 91 hits in a day at one point and also having numerous other bloggers report a lot of hits on their web sites, after covering our fight. But instead of cowering away or backing down these bloggers exposed the hits to their readers."

"So I guess the ATF is gone...but interestingly enough the number one city in the United States that has visited my website with 21 hits at 10am is Spokane, Washington which has never been even remotely close to that high. Spokane is a lovely city ... however the only person that I know that lives in Spokane is ATF Supervisor Linda Young." ...

"By 2005, even though the city's crime rate declined from a peak reached in 2001, Albany still was one of 25 similar-size cities with 100 or more violent crimes per 10,000 residents. Robberies and aggravated assaults are the most common violent crimes -- and most are committed without guns." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small, complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd. — Alexis de Tocqueville
