The 2023-2024 season for the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation’s (SSSF) youth development programs has concluded with another record-breaking National Championship. Hosted at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio, the annual youth shooting sports competition once again set the mark for the largest shoot in Cardinal Center history. Between the SSSF’s clay target and action shooting youth programs, 40 states were represented at the National Championships, which saw over 3 million rounds safely fired without incident.

Action shooting sports participation continues to grow throughout the nation for young athletes and had a strong showing at the SSSF’s Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) National Championship.

Parkison pushed one female victim against a wall. The victim had a defensive cut on her hand from Parkison’s knife when she reportedly held it to the victim’s throat. A male resident grabbed a gun and demanded she leave their property. Parkison reportedly charged at the male with her knife and she was shot multiple times. The altercation occurred in the front yard of the residence.

MN: Misguided ruling from the Minnesota Supreme Court

On July 31, the Minnesota Supreme Court released a controversial decision that stated people do not have a right to “brandish a deadly weapon” as a form of self-defense when they feel threatened. It is absolutely wrong that a majority of the court decided that a person’s primary duty and first response to a threat should be to “retreat.” This is a completely unprecedented legal decision that undermines an individual’s right to safety.

A federal appeals court on Tuesday upheld Maryland's decade-old ban on military-style firearms commonly referred to as assault weapons.

A majority of 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals judges rejected gun rights groups' arguments that Maryland's 2013 law is unconstitutional under the Second Amendment.

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to review this case in May, when the full 4th Circuit was still considering it. Maryland officials argued the Supreme Court should defer to the lower court before taking any action, but the plaintiffs said the appeals court was taking too long to rule.

FL: Florida gun suit challenges state's ban on open-carry

A Florida gun lawsuit filed earlier this week is challenging the state's open-carry ban, claiming that the legislation violates the Second Amendment.

Florida eliminated a longstanding requirement last year that residents obtain state concealed-weapons licenses to be able to carry guns. But the state does not allow people to openly carry firearms, according to CBS News.

The Second Amendment groups Gun Owners of America, the Gun Owners Foundation, and gun owner Richard Hughes filed the lawsuit on Tuesday, claiming that it would not pass previous legal muster that gun laws must meet the "historical tradition" of firearms regulation.

A majority opposes the decision that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives exceeded its statutory authority when it prohibited bump stocks which enable semiautomatic rifles to fire at speeds rivaling those of machine guns (Garland v. Cargill).

...

A similarly large majority, 69%, favors the 2022 decision that, subject to some restrictions, the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to carry a handgun for self-defense outside the home (New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen). The decision is opposed by 31%.

Harris and Walz Announced Assault Weapons Ban, Not Gun Ban, During Rally

On Aug. 6, 2024, the National Rifle Association's X account posted a video of U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris giving a speech while her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, stood behind her. In the clip, she said: "And together, when we win in November, we are finally going to pass universal background checks, red flag laws and an assault weapons ban."

Ed.: Snopes lying again. A 'Gun Ban' doesn't mean all guns are banned any more than a 'Book Ban' means all books are banned.

No, Tim Walz didn't carry weapons in war; Yes, he misspoke: Harris campaign clarifies

"In making the case for why weapons of war should never be on our streets or in our classrooms, the Governor misspoke. He did handle weapons of war and believes strongly that only military members trained to carry those deadly weapons should have access to them, unlike Donald Trump and JD Vance who prioritize the gun lobby over our children," the spokesperson added.

Ed.: He didn't 'misspeak'. Walz has a long, and documented, history of falsely implying he saw combat.

In a recent press conference, former President Donald Trump made it abundantly clear that his commitment to the Second Amendment remains unwavering, even in the face of a personal assassination attempt that came fractions of an inch from ending his life and left him shot and bleeding from his head.

The weapon used by the now-dead would-be assassin was an AR-15, the most popular and most owned rifle in America, a rifle that has become a symbol in the debate over gun rights in America. Yet, despite the incident, Trump firmly stood his ground on our right to keep and bear arms.

Ironically, just a week after the introduction of that federal measure another state is attempting to raise funding on the backs of gun owners. During the current special session of the Nebraska Legislature a measure was introduced that would place a 5% excise tax on all ammunition sales in the Cornhusker State.

The measure is Legislative Bill 65, authored by Democrat Justin Wayne. And according to the measure’s language, the revenue will go to the state Department of Revenue, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Game and Parks Commission.

There may never be a scarier film on how America’s obsession with firearms than Javier Horcajada’s From My Cold Dead Hands, which had its North American premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival. It is so scary that the filmmaker doesn’t have to interview anyone or speak on the images he presents by including a voiceover narration. Rather, all he does is compile videos he has found on YouTube to showcase how petrifying the country’s relationship with guns has become.

Yesterday, the New York City Police Department adopted an emergency rule which will allow non-residents to apply for concealed carry permits. This follows a lawsuit filed by Gun Owners of America (GOA) and the Gun Owners Foundation (GOF) in February of this year on behalf of several non-residents (including Newsmax TV Host Carl Higbie) who have been wholly unable to secure any type of carry permit in New York, leaving them defenseless.

There have been mixed reactions to the change online. While some were in favor, others questioned the policy. "Never should've been allowed in the first place," read one comment on Instagram. "Bro you don't need a gun to go to a fair what's wrong with y'all" another asked. "I'm sorry, I thought I lived in Texas," wrote another. "Well that's not very Texan," read a different comment. "California state fair now," another chimed.

Donald Trump played up the contrast between his approach to guns and Kamala Harris for the first time this week.

During his Thursday press conference, Trump attacked Harris and touted his record on guns. That was different from the previous several weeks, which were hallmarked by Trump’s silence on the issue. I try to answer whether that means he’s changing course.

Speaking of changing course, Harris’s VP pick indicates she won’t be moving any further to the middle on guns. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz may have started his career as a pro-gun Democrat, but he’s been in line with the restrictions Harris wants since at least 2018.

Authorities in Ida County, Iowa say no criminal charges are being filed after a shooting that resulted in one person’s death.

About two and a half months ago, there was a shooting in Battle Creek, Iowa. The shooting resulted in the death of 53-year-old Kevin Blume, a Battle Creek resident.

According to the Ida County Sheriff’s Office, Blume was shot by 22-year-old Branden Lee Wingert, also a Battle Creek resident. The sheriff’s office says Wingert is not being charged and this decision was “based on the facts and circumstances of the incident, and Iowa’s self-defense laws.”

On June 14, 2024 the Supreme Court ruled that bump stocks are no longer illegal, reversing an order from Donald Trump and the ATF that was passed in the wake of the Las Vegas shootings.

The words "Second Amendment" do not appear in the opinion, concurring opinion, or dissent. And yet, within minutes of the ruling, every news agency was calling it a Second Amendment case. So what is the Second Amendment?

Today another federal court rejected President Joe Biden’s war on guns, ruling against his effort to require 3 million to 7 million owners of AR-style pistols to register and pay a $200 tax on their firearms or face prison.

In the latest blow to liberal gun control politicians and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the St. Louis-based 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the government’s plan, claiming it was likely to get tossed by the Supreme Court.

For now, the millions of users of guns equipped with “pistol braces” can keep them without fear of being fined or jailed.

“It’s one thing to have a right to bear arms, it’s another to have legislation, like permit-less carry, that makes it easier for senseless acts of gun violence like this to be carried out in our state. I wish our Republican friends in Austin would pass meaningful gun legislation to help our constituents feel safe in public,” Bazaldua posted on X.

The State Fair of Texas had been an ardent supporter of the “rights of responsible gun-owning Texans,” allowing attendees “with valid handgun licenses to carry their handguns in a concealed manner while attending the Fair.”

Hancock became a four-time Olympic gold champion in his sport, having previously earned Olympic gold medals in 2008, 2012, and 2021. He is the only skeet shooter to take home an Olympic gold medal more than once.

That should earn him some accolades. Maybe something like a Google-doodle. Don’t count on it, though. The Big Tech overlords celebrated in a much more sinister fashion. Meta shut him down. No Facebook. No Instagram. No celebrations of American shooting gold.

Big Tech Poor Sports

Just last week, NSSF highlighted the Big Tech bias against the USA Shooting, when YouTube and Meta shadow-banned McKenna Geer, a Paralympic shooter who will represent Team USA in Paris for the 2024 Paralympics.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced this week that they are opening up 53 new hunting and sport fishing opportunities on approximately 211,000 acres nationwide in the National Wildlife Refuge System, a move heralded by pro-gun and pro-hunting organizations.

Twelve national wildlife refuges, managed by the service, are proposing to open and expand opportunities for hunting and fishing. These refuges are in Kentucky, Louisiana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Carolina, Texas, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
There are other things so clearly out of the power of Congress, that the bare recital of them is sufficient, I mean the "...rights of bearing arms for defence, or for killing game..." These things seem to have been inserted among their objections, merely to induce the ignorant to believe that Congress would have a power over such objects and to infer from their being refused a place in the Constitution, their intention to exercise that power to the oppression of the people. —ALEXANDER WHITE (1787)
