"Last week’s announcement that the terrorist threat warning level has been raised in parts of New York, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C. has led to dramatic and unprecedented restrictions on the movements of citizens. Americans wishing to visit the U.S. Capitol must, for example, pass through several checkpoints and submit to police inspection of their cars and persons."

"Many Americans support the new security measures because they claim to feel safer when the government issues terror alerts and fills the streets with militarized police forces. As one tourist interviewed this week said, 'It makes me feel comfortable to know that everything is being checked.' It is ironic that tourists coming to Washington to celebrate the freedoms embodied in the Declaration of Independence are so eager to give up those freedoms with no questions asked." ...

"There is a disturbing pattern of behavior emerging in America. Every so often, when a summer night is too hot or the moon is full, someone takes an assault rifle or a machine pistol and goes on a shooting rampage."

"It happened the other day in Columbus, Ohio. A man with an automatic rifle stormed through a neighborhood, firing at homes and people. Three were wounded, including a policeman trying to stop the attack."

"We aren't saying that a complete ban on assault-style weapons would stop such madness, but it couldn't hurt. Yet the federal assault weapons ban that has been in force for years will expire Sept. 13 unless Congress passes a pending bill to renew the law. And it looks like Congress isn't going to do that." ...

"FMG Publications is encouraging American sportsmen to vote to with their wallets this fall by supporting their Second Amendment right. The message from the publisher of American Handgunner, GUNS and Shooting Industry magazine: 'Buy a Gun for America.'"

"'You can't move without slipping on a campaign button or choking on another political promise,' said FMG promotion director Randy Molde. 'Sportsmen have the power to sway the election process with their vote, to be sure -- but their untapped strength lies in that fist full of cash they're willing to plunk down on a new gun, the ammunition and the accessories to go with it.'" ...

"Context Firearms are used in approximately half of all youth suicides. Many state and federal laws include age-specific restrictions on the purchase, possession, or storage of firearms; however, the association between these laws and suicides among youth has not been carefully examined." ...

"Conclusions There is evidence that CAP [Child Access Prevention] laws are associated with a modest reduction in suicide rates among youth aged 14 to 17 years. As currently implemented, minimum age restrictions for the purchase and possession of firearms do not appear to reduce overall rates of suicide among youth." ...

"'Is it necessary to break in a new rifle barrel? If so, how is it done? It seems confusing; is it important to follow the procedure exactly? Can doing it incorrectly ruin a new rifle? Help me, I'm so confused!'"

"I get a letter like that about once a month." ...

"Relax, it's not that complicated, and it's hard to screw up."

"If you are properly caring for your rifle, you are probably close to doing it already. In the end, all you are doing in breaking in a rifle bore is using the bullets you are firing to burnish any minor imperfections in the rifling."

"Because those imperfections will collect metal fouling from the bullet jacket and 'fill in,' you must clean the fouling often and completely from the bore, particularly when the gun is new." ...

"I visited my local dealer with the intention of replenishing my ammo supply and window shopping. Looked to see if there were any Gunsite Service Pistols on the shelf but instead saw a sexy looking number with 'Kimber Custom Shop' on the slide. Having seen it, I had to run my hands over it and check the trigger...I vaguely remember staggering out of the store with the feel of overheated plastic in my hip pocket and a box labeled 'Kimber.'"

'She started to run across the street to my side of the street, and (the shooter) ran out . . . . where he proceeded to shoot at her,' Miller told Vancouver radio station CKNW.
