... "Instead, real-time leads were ignored, true suspects were not pursued and Dobyns’ telephone calls were illegally recorded. A veteran investigator of numerous high-profile incidents who declared 'Jay [is] clean' was removed from the case. That removal was ordered, Dobyns writes, by the same supervisor first named in connection with Operation Fast and Furious 'gunwalking' and the death of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, by insiders discussing agency abuses on the CleanUp ATF website. ... "What Grossman and those behind him are prepared to do when some of us tell him where he and they can go, and what they can do with themselves once they get there, remains unsaid. What level of state force he would see deployed and how many lives he would to see destroyed in order to bend gun owners who will not back up another inch to his will is perhaps something he has never considered, probably because he expects other men to execute his demands." ...

"When Ray Rice beat his wife unconscious in an elevator, New Jersey Superior Court Judge Michael Donio and New Jersey District Attorney Jim McClain agreed to put him in a diversion program for 1st-time offenders to keep him out of jail. But when Pennsylvania single mom Shaneen Allen was pulled over for a traffic violation and volunteered to a New Jersey police officer that she was carrying a legally-owned handgun with a Pennsylvania permit, the response of Donis and McClain was to deny her the same opportunity as Rice." ...

"When a Virginia medical examiner ruled on Friday that former Reagan press secretary James S. Brady’s death was a homicide, there was much speculation about whether it might open the door to a criminal prosecution of the man who shot him."

"One might put equal energy into wondering whether the ruling might open the door for anti-gunners to somehow exploit Brady’s passing. The ruling is being discussed on two popular Northwest gun rights forums, WaGuns and Northwest Firearms." ...

"Jonathan Kay of Canada’s National Post is weighing in on America’s 'gun culture'. Before asking what in Hades a Canadian could know about the subject, know that he spent two years studying the conspiracist subculture on his way to authoring Among The Truthers, so his current polemic, America’s firearms culture forged by paranoia, racism and civil rights unrest, is based in part upon that experience. Which may also explain the paranoia he attributes to us 'gun nuts'. Unfortunately he doesn’t seem to have researched this topic as fully as his book. If he had . . ." ...

"Michael Bloomberg proposes to pump $50 million into an anti-gun organization, called 'Everytown for Gun Safety,' which works to end gun violence by banning guns."

"Let’s face it. Guns are not going to go away. Any good machinist or computer engineer can manufacture a bolt, receiver and a barrel, with metal or a composite material, to replace confiscated firearms."

"Josh Stepakoff hadn’t yet reached first grade when he was wounded 15 years ago in a gunman’s shooting spree at a Jewish center in Granada Hills and began seeing the world through survivor’s eyes."

"In his freshman year at Cal State Northridge, he notified his professors that he was going to take an extra day or two off after a student was rumored to have a gun even though university officials discounted any immediate threat. He generally avoids movie theaters since the Aurora, Colo., shooting. And on Monday, he got 'really nervous' while driving back from a Las Vegas weekend trip because it occurred to him that a driver tailgating him might be angry and have a gun." ...

"Neighbors in a quiet community in Diamond Bar were shocked."

"A neighbor shot at a burglar who broke into his home Friday."

"'Oh my God! That's scary!' said Sandra Figueroa, who has lived in the Diamond Bar neighborhood with her husband, Carlos, for more than a decade. 'If I had a gun, I'd probably do the same thing, but that's scary.'"

"Police say the burglar entered the home thinking no one was there."

"Gunfights at close range often result in both participants being hit. It can take time for bullet wounds to take effect. In a Lakeland, Florida shooting Wednesday night, we don’t know the calibers, other than both participants were using handguns. The intended victim, Virgis Canteen, is 43. The 14-year-old gang member, Davion Smith, had been convicted of armed robbery twice since he was 12 and the two parties had a history. Canteen had accused Davion Smith of burglarizing his apartment. Both participants were hit several times . . " ...

"Numerous people have criticized homeowners for having a gun in their hand or on their person when answering a door. I have always maintained that it is only prudent to do so. Home security systems can be very useful, of course. A standoff barrier ... works very well, as do surveillance cameras. ... In any case, surveillance and standoff systems work best when backed up by armed force. I have reported numerous cases where armed homeowners prevailed against criminal attackers; and even a few cases where armed homeowners prevailed in court against police invaders. There are even a couple of rare cases where police officers have shot and killed homeowners, simply because the homeowner was armed . . ." ...

"At the end of July, United States Representative Mike Honda (D-CA) introduced H.R. 5344, the 'Responsible Body Armor Possession Act.' Hmm . . . is he saying that in a dangerous world, it's irresponsible to be without body armor, so he wants to mandate its possession? That would be awfully heavy on the nanny state paternalism (and obviously not within the purview of any Constitutionally delegated power of the federal government), but one could perhaps argue that it's at least well intended."

"That, though, is not at all what he has in mind. His idea of keeping the possession of body armor 'responsible' is to restrict that possession to only the government's hired muscle." ...

"The Democratic Congress and President Barack Obama just can’t keep their eyes off of Americans’ guns. ... they are unconstitutionally focusing on their continuous violation of the Second Amendment. The new gun confiscation bill introduced in the Senate claims to be aimed at removing guns from domestic abusers, but since no authority was given to the federal government to restrict or regulate arms, it is unconstitutional on its face. Given the U.S. Supreme Court in Castle Rock v. Gonzalez ruled that the state owes no duty to protect citizens from each other, the government has no authority involving itself in domestic violence matters or child support enforcement matters." ...

"Members of the North Bay gun community and law enforcement officials had sharply divided opinions on a proposed California law that would make it easier to take guns away from someone a family member or officer feared was likely to hurt themselves or others."

"The bill, AB 1014, would allow immediate relatives and law enforcement to petition a judge to take firearms away from a person who has shown signs he or she might cause harm. It was prompted by the attack in Isla Vista near the University of California, Santa Barbara, by student Elliot Rodger in May that left six people, including Rodger, dead." ...

"It’s a phrase that you’ve probably heard many times: 'When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.' Of course, this is not a criticism of police officers, but simply a cold, hard fact of reality. The technology to instantly 'beam' law enforcement into the heart of an emergency isn’t quite there yet, and on Monday, Harnett County Sheriff Larry Rollins acknowledged this reality. During a public discussion on a recent spike in crime rates, the Sheriff explicitly recognized and reinforced the fact that, in emergencies, citizens are their own first-responders. Specifically, Sheriff Rollins said . . ." ...

"Concerns with how far the federal government will go in collecting and storing private, personal information are more than understandable. These concerns are validated when we see examples of federal agencies overstepping into our personal lives, such as a federal agency collecting and monitoring massive amounts of data on individuals’ personal financial accounts. We must continue to watch the watchdogs and not allow the federal government to further encroach on our personal privacy. Helping to ensure the protection of our Second Amendment rights includes making certain that federal funding cannot be used for the establishment of firearms registries." ...
