Responsible gun owners defended themselves again this week. Self-defense instructor Ben Branam brings three new examples.
Are you armed at work? You’re working at Domino’s pizza. A middle aged man walks up to the counter and asks to speak with the manager. You see the customer draw a gun. You’re armed.
Are you armed when you stop for coffee? You are standing in line when a 16 year old draws his gun and pushes in into your back.
Are you armed when you’re at home? You hear someone pounding on your apartment door. You look through the window and you think you see that the stranger is armed.
What can we learn from their experience? Text and podcast available at the link. (16 minutes)

We all “know” that supporters of gun restrictions operate on emotions and “gut feelings” over facts. But the fact is, many supporters of the Second Amendment and individual rights are also operating on “gut feelings.” Too many of our most ardent advocates on social media, in article comments, internet forums, and letters to the editor, etc., just repeat bumper-sticker slogans, or devolve into personal attacks.
Those are habits that need to change, and the only way it will change is if you change it. |

When he decided to become a foster parent for his grandson, Bill Johnson was given an ultimatum: give up your guns, or lose your grandson.
“If you want to care for your grandson, you will have to give up some of your constitutional rights,” Johnson alleges the Department of Health and Human Services caseworkers told him, in court documents published by The Free Beacon. When he didn’t back down, they clarified: “There would not be a power struggle, that they would just take his grandson and place him in a foster home.” |

Monroe police say a fatal shooting last weekend appears to have been done in self-defense.
“Based on all the information gathered to this point it appears that Colin Bailey acted in self-defense. No charges are pending against Colin Bailey and he is not in custody,” said Monroe police Officer Josh King in a statement.
Bailey, 19, allegedly shot and killed his father Aug. 5 during a domestic disturbance at their Teil Tree Court home. |

A man ignored an order of protection, went to his ex-girlfriend’s house with a container of gasoline and a baseball bat and attacked a man who shot him in self-defense, deputies say.
Joshua Cuthbertson went to his girlfriend’s home Monday, despite being aware of the order of protection prohibiting contact with her, Polk County deputies said.
Deputies said a man who was at the home came outside after dogs started barking, and he then smelled a strong odor of gasoline near his vehicle.
The man said he found Cuthbertson hiding behind his vehicle and Cuthbertson attacked him with a baseball bat, hitting him in the head multiple times, deputies said. |

He continued: "Jan Wenner, the founder of Rolling Stone [magazine] and the boss hog at Rock And Roll Of Fame, he hates freedom, he hates the Second Amendment, he hates me, because I'm on the board of directors — quite proudly — of the National Rifle Association for, like, twenty-six years with some of the highest votes except for Charlton Heston [NRA's president]. And I couldn't be more proud of that, 'cause the NRA is the ultimate family, grassroots organization that fights for the right to defend ourselves. What kind of numbnut would be against that? And so I'm on the board of directors of the NRA, Jan Wenner hates the Second Amendment, so that's the only reason I'm not in the Rock And Roll Of Fame." |

Alan Gottlieb, founder of one of the groups that challenged the law, the Bellevue-based Second Amendment Foundation, said the decision shows that "gun owners must get more involved in Supreme Court races."
"The high court's decision to uphold what clearly appears to us as a violation of Washington's 34-year-old State Preemption Act is proof positive that the court places political correctness above the rule of law," he said.
In her dissent, Justice Sheryl Gordon McCloud said she believed state law forbids cities from imposing taxes on gun sales. |

“Violence based on fear is the root cause of this bombing incident,” the group Protect Minnesota wrote on its Facebook page Tuesday morning. “We hope that groups like Minnesota Gun Rights, Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus, and Gun Owners Civil Rights Alliance can provide good information to the FBI to find and arrest the people responsible.”
“We are outraged by these libelous, defamatory, and false accusations made by Protect Minnesota,“ Bryan Strawser, Chair of the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus, said in a released statement. “Our organization is committed to the defense of civil rights. This statement and its implications are baseless and offensive. Needless to say, we have no information on this tragic attack.” |

You've called your state representative about constitutional carry. You've e-mailed your state senator about allowing provisional CPLs for 18-20 year olds. And now you're wondering what more you can do to move gun reform forward in Michigan.
We receive this question all the time from members: “What more can I do?”
The answer is surprising simple -take a friend or family member shooting, particularly if they have little experience with pistols or modern rifles. |

Navarro's rulings have severely limited defense arguments to avoid what she has described as jury nullification.
Navarro has barred defendants from discussing why they traveled thousands of miles to join protesters at the Bundy Ranch. She will not allow them to testify about perceived abuses by federal authorities during the cattle roundup that might have motivated them to participate.
Navarro also has restricted defendants from raising constitutional arguments, or mounting any defense based on their First Amendment rights to free speech and their Second Amendment rights to bear arms. In her rulings, Navarro has said those are not applicable arguments in the case. |

Sarasota Republican Sen. Greg Steube is reviving one of the less controversial of his gun bills from last session, which would let concealed-weapons permit-holders carry their firearms into Florida courthouses and store the weapons temporarily with building security.
Steube on Thursday filed a bill for the 2018 session (SB 134) that puts that same proposal back on the table. It has a viable chance, if this spring was any indication. |

As soon as the doors opened to submit bills for the 2018 legislative session, Sen. Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, locked and loaded two gun measures onto the docket. Steube lost a standoff over gun-free zones last year in a committee he chaired. But the Judiciary chairman fired back this week with proposals to allow firearms at courthouses and concealed-weapons permit holders to sue businesses that ban guns.
“If a private business wants to prohibit guns in their location that’s fine,” said Steube. “But if you’re prohibiting me from carrying, and I’m licensed to carry, then you’re assuming the responsibility to have adequate security in place to protect me.” |

Self defense insurance is a topic that has come to the forefront of discussion amongst firearms owners in recent years. Things like do I need, what is it, and how much should I pay for it? Those who choose to carry a firearm for self defense are usually cognizant of the fact that if they use that gun to defend themselves, there is likely going to some lawyers involved. And as you all know, lawyers cost money….blood suckers. Depending on the circumstances, being involved in a self defense shooting may result in a brief investigation and a determination that it was justified with no further action or may result in criminal charging, which is every gun owner's worst nightmare. And guys…that has happened more than once. |

AA now insists on putting a bright, red tag on all checked luggage that contains guns. The tag says:
“Return to BSO” (Baggage Security Office)
At AA, luggage containing guns does not go out to the carousal, as it does with most other airlines I fly. It is delivered directly to the AA baggage-claim office and must be surrendered personally to the legitimate claimant (after showing identification). I notice that it arrives at the baggage-claim office after all other luggage is out on the carousal, so you can now add at least ten minutes to your stay at the airport. |
