“It was 1,500 yards away. Getting closer was tough.” Hans Taska would spend most of the next hour pushing through swamp-grass, wading a creek and pausing, hunched over, when his guide, Dave Sturm stopped. Hunting can be uncomfortable. “We had the wind,” he told me, “but honestly, keeping track of that was new to me.”

Last Monday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit reinstated an NRA-supported challenge to Maryland’s convoluted handgun licensing scheme. An earlier trial court decision had dismissed the case on technical grounds, claiming the plaintiffs lacked standing to bring the lawsuit. Three judges of the Fourth Circuit overruled that erroneous decision, finding that a gun store plaintiff has standing to raise a Second Amendment challenge on behalf of its customers. The case is Maryland Shall Issue v. Hogan.

President Trump isn’t much of a shooter, though he’s again won the endorsement of the National Rifle Association. But that hasn’t stopped supporters from customizing classic Henry rifles, Rugers, and others with the president’s name and image for sale. One group, Heroes and Patriots Fundraisers, has a Henry Big Boy with Trump’s image and campaign slogans etched in the stock. Another gun distributor is selling Henry Golden Boys with a silver plate that reads "2020 Trump." |

The .17 HMR has impressive ballistics. Bullets weigh between 15.5 grains and 20 grains – ammo this small, propelled by the comparatively large powder loads in the .22 Magnum case, travel at high velocities. Some loads have a muzzle velocity as high as 2,550 feet per second. But even with those high speeds, muzzle energy for this round is only about 250 foot pounds, which is plenty for shooting varmints and targets at long distances.

Gun rights groups like the Canadian Shooting Sports Association (CSSA), the National Firearms Association (NFA), and firearm owners across Canada continue to expose new problems with the “assault weapon”ban imposed by Trudeau’s Liberal government on May 1, 2020. Readers will recall that more than 1,500 firearms and devices (as well as present and future “variants”) became reclassified as “prohibited”in Canada, through regulations that took effect immediately. |

With the rise of Precision Rifle competition, and the long-range craze touching segments of the firearms market, many have considered dipping their toes into the custom rifle world. With the surge in popularity, we're going to show you how to save money by turning an old hunting rifle into your dream PRS setup. Word of warning, though, be prepared to repeat this process -- once you bring one rifle to life, you'll only want to build another. |

Rick Ector was teaching an eight-hour concealed pistol license course in early July, and his cellphone wouldn’t stop vibrating.
Ector had just resumed teaching in-person lessons the month before. He hadn’t advertised. But people were calling to ask about enrolling in future courses, he said.
“It’s an explosion of interest from people who want to learn about guns,” said Ector, who has worked as a firearms instructor in Detroit for 13 years. “The interest in personal protection is on a level none of us (firearm instructors) has ever seen.”
Those working in the gun industry and gun owners themselves say the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic is spurring increased interest in gun ownership.

Head to Head: .38 Super vs. 9 mm

Many believe the .38 Super is a “magnum” 9 mm and that it’s significantly more effective from a terminal-performance standpoint. With common FMJ ammunition you can expect a .38 Super to generate about 10 percent more velocity and about 20 percent more kinetic energy. That sounds substantial, but does this increase in power translate to better terminal performance than what can be expected with a 9 mm when expanding projectiles are used for personal protection? I wanted to find out.

Sometimes, you can have too many of a good thing. That is the case in the special election that is taking place in Georgia for the Senate seat that Johnny Isakson vacated late last year. The top two contenders on the Republican side are both good choices. One is Kelly Loeffler, the current incumbent. She was appointed to fill the vacancy caused by Isakson’s early retirement and was sworn in this past January.

Already reeling from a steady wave of violence that has so far cost at least 18 lives this month and more than 425 so far this year, Chicago erupted with what Fox News described as “widespread looting and clashes with police” in the aftermath of a police shooting that left a suspect wounded.
Alarmingly, Ryan Baker, an anchor at WBBM-TV said in a tweet, “Absolute chaos in downtown Chicago with more overnight looting and vandalism in the Loop. Appears to be coordinated effort with minimal police presence.”

During a Fox News interview, Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) warned voters that Joe Biden wants to take away guns and suggested Biden is letting anti-gun leftists push that agenda for him. Two trend lines related to our issue have diverged in a remarkable way that indicates that firearms and the 2nd Amendment are fundamental American mainstays. We’ve covered the string of record-breaking NICS background check numbers since the onset of the pandemic, and July NICS data continues that trend. New data from Gallup shows that gun control has slid further down Americans’ list of most important issues, and a deeper dive into NICS data suggests that new gun owners and the need for self-defense are driving the 2020 surge.

Minnesota’s ruffed grouse spring population counts are similar to last year and likely are following the 10-year cycle of rise and fall—a predictable pattern recorded for 71 years. Due to COVID-related restrictions, this past spring’s drumming counts in southeastern Minnesota were not conducted as planned. As the DNR was able to resume more field operations in May, there was still time to conduct drumming counts in more northerly portions of the state, where the peak in drumming activity occurs later. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
"Secrecy is the keystone of all tyranny. Not force, but secrecy ... censorship. When any government, or any church, for that matter, undertakes to say to it's subjects, 'This you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know,' the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motives. Mighty little force is needed to control a man whose mind has been hoodwinked; contrariwise, no amount of force can control a free man, a man whose mind is free. No, not the rack, not fission bombs, not anything. You cannot conquer a free man; the most you can do is kill him." --Robert A. Heinlein, "Revolt in 2100" (Pg. 68-69, Baen Books paperback edition, 1999 printing) |
