The Town of Farragut prohibits guns inside Town Hall, but that could change.
The Board of Aldermen agreed at its July 27 board meeting to poll city employees on whether the city should remove the sign on its exterior doors that bans guns inside Town Hall.
The poll, which has not yet been sent, is to include questions about whether employees would feel comfortable if the town purchased ballistic plates designed to protect against gunfire in certain areas, similar to those used at bank counters. |

Recent weeks have seen a heated debate involving national Democratic Party figures over how to approach the issue of abortion in a manner that would allow the party to be more competitive in portions of the country dominated by Donald Trump and the Republicans in the 2016 election. Such soul-searching is to be expected for a party that does not hold either chamber of Congress or the presidency. However, one issue that appears to be off the table in any Democratic recalibration is the national party’s zealous support for further gun restrictions.
This intransigence was highlighted by two recent pieces of radical gun control legislation. |

Now for the other side of the coin: What’s wrong with passing a few laws that won’t limit the ability of law-abiding people to carry weapons but will help to limit their availability to others? I’m thinking in particular of the gun-show loophole. I see no reason not to close it and require background checks of all purchasers at gun shows.
And frankly, I don’t see any need for the general public to own semi-automatic weapons or armor-piercing bullets. Those who want to shoot such weapons for sport should be able to do so at a firing range, safely, but why should they need them anywhere else? |

Immediately after the plea, Class appealed his conviction to the D.C. Circuit, arguing that the prohibition against firearms on Capitol grounds was unconstitutional both on its face and as applied to him even under the facts admitted in his plea. The D.C. Circuit affirmed his conviction without considering the merits of his argument, holding that Class waived any constitutional challenges the moment he struck a deal with the prosecutor and pled guilty. Although the case was simple and the D.C. Circuit’s opinion extremely short, the Supreme Court has agreed to weigh in and decide whether entering a plea can deprive a defendant in Class’s position to argue that the statute underlying that plea is, itself, unconstitutional. |

Sig Sauer on August 8 issued a voluntary recall for the P320 handgun, the civilian version of the Army’s M17, to correct a defect that causes an “uncommanded detonation” if dropped from certain heights and angles.
According to Sig Sauer, about 500,000 Sig P320s have been sold since they were introduced in the United States in 2014. The P320 is the civilian version of the M17, which the Army chose to replace the Beretta M9 as its standard sidearm earlier this year. |

A metal artist will turn weapons collected during a recent Fulton County buyback program into artwork Friday.
The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, Atlanta Metal Arts and the Elliott Street Pub partnered to “artistically destroy” the weapons, according to a press release.
An “iron pour” is held monthly at Elliott Street Pub, owned by Michael Jakob. The event will entail metal artist Patrick Toups pouring liquid iron heated to 5,000 degrees into frames containing at least one of the disabled handguns and long guns. |

As the campus spent the 2017 spring semester preparing for the new gun law, the tensions continued to run high for many students, faculty and staff. As of July 1, concealed carry has been allowed in all buildings on campus
In 2013, Kansas legislature passed a new law allowing concealed carry guns on every college campus in the state.
The new law allows concealed carry for handguns on college campuses to anyone 21 years of age or older. Campuses have had four years to prepare for the new law; however, students and faculty have seen a lack in preparation and awareness until the 2017 spring semester. |

U.S. policymakers, NRA-ILA, and even some of the most ardent anti-gun researchers, have long understood that gun turn-in programs do not hinder criminal violence. Despite the overwhelming evidence, the Land Down Under is currently in the midst of a National Firearms Amnesty program that aims to rid the country of its illegally possessed guns. Given the results so far, it appears unlikely the effort will make a meaningful dent in the country’s stock of illicit firearms. |

America having more guns stores than grocery stores, McDonald’s, and Starbucks combined is further proof this nation is the greatest place on the planet.
A year ago, a study came out, which I had somehow never seen before, that shows the United States has nearly 65,000* gun dealers in America, and a combined total of around 63,000 combined Starbucks, McDonald’s and grocery stores.

Debates about "open carry" laws usually revolve around gun owners' rights. The psychological effect of having all those guns around is seldom discussed—which is odd, considering that 50 years of research suggests the mere presence of a firearm tends to bring out people's aggressiveness.
There is now evidence that this dynamic extends to a specific and dangerous scenario: driving an automobile.
In a newly published study, "people drove more aggressively when a gun was present in their car—even though they did not put the gun there," reports a research team led by Brad Bushman of Ohio State University. |

Safety is always a top concern when sending a child off to college.
So, what are students allowed to have on campus to protect themselves?
N.C. State University freshman Morgan Broadnax said she recently purchased a can of pepper spray that now hangs from a lanyard around her neck.
“I thought, ‘why not have defense just in case? Just to be on the safe side,” said Broadnax. |

A two-day women’s-only class to introduce them to defensive handguns is slated for Aug. 26 and Sept. 9 at the Whittecar Range in Hamilton.
The first day is designed to assist women in choosing the right handgun. There will be discussions on handgun safety, basic operation of revolvers, semi-automatic handguns, and the cartridges used in each type of handgun.
Handguns will be provided so women can handle the different types and models. Ammunition also will be provided for a live fire session on the range. A self defense book specifically for women also is included. |

“Skyhorse Publishing is about to release my next book, which is devoted to great and fatal government-caused disasters. The title is …. ‘I’m From the Government, and I’m Here to Kill You: The Human Cost of Official Negligence,’” attorney and author David T. Hardy informed AmmoLand Shooting Sports News Thursday. “Texas City, the Tuskegee Syphilis study, Ruby Ridge, Waco, Fast and Furious, the VA hospital scandal – time after time, government employees kill Americans by negligence, stupidity, or agency corruption, and time after time they escape all legal accountability.” |

Award-winning journalist John Stossel published a report this week that provides a timely reminder that – nearly a decade after the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller – law abiding gun owners are still routinely persecuted and punished for exercising their rights.
Stossel’s report profiled harmless travelers caught up in New York City’s draconian approach to gun control, which treats as contraband handguns and magazines that are perfectly lawful under federal law and the laws of the overwhelming majority of states. Lawful possession requires a local license, which is not available to non-New York residents. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
By calling attention to a well-regulated militia for the security of the Nation, and the right of each citizen to keep and bear arms, our Founding Fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny, which gave rise to the second amendment, will ever be a major danger to our Nation, the amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic military-civilian relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of the country. For that reason I believe the second amendment will always be important. --JOHN F. KENNEDY |
