Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang shed tears at an Iowa town hall about gun safety, when a mother recalled how her 2-year-old daughter was fatally shot by a stray bullet while the girl's twin brother watched.
“One of my proposals is to actually help gun owners upgrade their guns to personalized guns free of charge.
Submitter's note: How would a "smart" gun have prevented the above death. It was a stray bullet. Someone fired that gun intentionally. Typical democrat. Proposing a technology that doesn't exist to fix a problem that it wouldn't have fixed anyway. |

The Second Amendment guarantees American citizens the right to bear arms, but both federal and state governments determine how citizens may legally exercise that right. And while both federal and state gun control laws regularly change, laws at the state level change more frequently and often without the media coverage that surrounds changes at the federal level.
This results in a constant challenge for gun owners to keep up with the latest state laws, especially for those who carry their weapons across state lines.

On August 4, Breitbart News reported that Crenshaw emerged from the El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, attacks pushing for Red Flag Laws. Crenshaw said, “Clearly, when we said ‘Red Flag Laws’ you guys stop listening, you can’t hear what we are suggesting, because understandably you automatically assume that we are just agreeing with the left’s version of that law. And we all know the left’s version would not be good, it would not protect due process.” |

An Ohio man who posted to Facebook that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez "should be shot" was arrested Thursday on weapons charges, federal officials said.
Timothy James Ireland Jr, 41, of Toledo, is charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, one count of being a fugitive in possession of a firearm and one count of ""making interstate threats"", the Justice Department said in a statement Friday.

A Michigan Congressman is urging President Trump and the U.S. Senate to act on gun control after two mass shootings in just 13 hours last week.
After last weekend's mass shootings in Dayton and El Paso, President Donald Trump promised action on guns would happen and even Tweeted that serious discussions were happening regarding meaningful background checks.
Congressman Andy Levin (D-Mich.) says he and others have volunteered to return to Washington from their break to deal with the issue. But he says the Senate won't make it happen.
"It's all about the Senate and Mitch McConnell," Levin said. "Clearly the senate is the one not acting."
Levin wants the Senate to act on legislation that calls for universal background checks. |

Amid a renewed push for all kinds of gun control following mass shooting incidents in three states over two consecutive weekends, the Trump administration has reached out to leaders in the Second Amendment community seeking their input, a marked change from the previous administration.
Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the grassroots Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and founder and CEO of the Second Amendment Foundation confirmed to Liberty Park Press that he had spoken with a “top White House staffer” on a wide range of gun-rights-related topics. He anticipates further discussions.

Twenty-two people were killed and 25 were injured in a mass shooting at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, on Aug. 3. But that was actually the fourth mass shooting of the week. It began on Monday with a shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in California that killed three and injured 16. The very next day two people were shot dead and another wounded at a Walmart store in Southaven, Miss. Then 13 hours after the El Paso incident, nine people were shot to death and 27 wounded in Dayton, Ohio. These other shootings barely received any coverage outside their local areas. I guess the body count threshold for a mass shooting to be newsworthy has risen above 40 these days. |

For one group of bikers in Eau Claire, gun ownership is a right they believe is worth fighting for. “What we want to do is celebrate the fact that, endowed by our creator, we have the right to bear arms to protect ourselves, and to use what we need to use it for, which is a lot of real real good things,” Mark Dickinsen, one of the organizers for the first annual Second Amendment Celebration, said. |

When it comes to gun control, conservatives have been fortunate in their enemies. Every time there is a mass shooting, the left renews its calls for gun control, but it spends a great deal of energy on futile and ahistorical arguments about the wording of the Second Amendment, or making hackle-raising, invidious comparisons with Europe. |

Bob Hines, a retired well driller in central Minnesota, has bought many guns in his lifetime. He supports the Second Amendment and voted straight Republican in recent elections. But he’s also tired of hearing stories of mass shootings on the news. And while he’s not sure anything can be done to curb the violence at this point, doing something seems better than just waiting for the next massacre. |

Sen. Elizabeth Warren has unveiled a comprehensive plan to reduce gun violence by enacting a suite of new restrictions on buyers, cracking down on sellers and breaking "the (National Rifle Association's) stranglehold on Congress" with anti-corruption legislation. The proposal arrives as more than 15 Democratic primary candidates prepare to take turns speaking at a gun safety forum in Des Moines, Iowa, and a week after the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio. |

Upland bird hunting in Maine is one of my favorite outdoor activities and this year’s season is only seven weeks away. Opening day for ruffed grouse is usually Oct. 1, but this year it begins on Sept. 28 and runs through Dec. 31. Woodcock season is Oct. 1 through Nov. 21. Grouse and woodcock numbers have been up and down for the past two decades in the areas where we hunt, and I never know what to expect each year until we get back into the bird covers once again. Looking through my hunting journals and past outdoor columns I found one of my best hunts in the past 20 years was a three-day trip to our camp during the fourth week of October 2012. |

While President Donald Trump and the White House have reached out to leaders in the Second Amendment movement in the wake of three mass shootings, with an apparent emphasis on so-called “universal background checks (UBC),” is there too much faith being put in the process as a crime-prevention mechanism? Perhaps overshadowed by other shooting-related reports in the wake of almost back-to-back tragedies in El Paso and Dayton, which happened a week after another attack at a garlic festival in California, was a CNN fact check that cast doubt on the ability of a UBC to prevent such crimes. |

I try to stay away from politics in this column; there are other and better minds than mine for that subject elsewhere on this site and elsewhere around the web. This time, I’m going to get into it a little bit. Recently, Senator Bernie Sanders (I, VT) appeared on an episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience,” the incredibly popular podcast featuring former “Fear Factor” host and current UFC color commentator (and stand-up comic) Joe Rogan. Guns, mass shootings and gun control were part of the conversation. |

Sen. Kamala Harris’ campaign on Sunday responded to an attack from the National Rifle Association that called her proposed gun reform legislation “ridiculous,” a move that comes as the nation is still reeling from two recent mass shootings. Harris has proposed to sign executive orders that mandate near universal background checks and closing the so-called boyfriend loophole among others if Congress doesn’t act on gun legislation within 100 days of her inauguration, should she become president. The California Democrat has also called for a renewal of the assault weapons ban. |

MSNBC ‘s PoliticsNation host Al Sharpton on Saturday claimed banning semi-automatic weapons would be the "most pro-police" proposal Congress could come up with. "This president has always attacked those of us that questioned some police when there are things that we consider police going over the line," Sharpton said. "Banning automatic weapons, banning semi-automatic weapons, banning these kinds of military-style weapons is the most pro-police thing you can do because they are the first responders." |

As the nation reels from mass shootings in California, Texas and Ohio, many lawmakers and politicians find themselves navigating familiar territory in the latest national debate on gun control. In Texas, there aren't currently any laws banning the possession or the purchase of weapons like the AK-47 the shooter used to kill 22 people and injure dozens more. |

The pattern was established long ago. A killing spree happens. The Democratic party and mainstream media erupt in calls for gun control. Republicans shy away from cable news for a few days. Various fixes to the background check and mental health systems are proposed, video games are criticized, and eventually our attention turns elsewhere, until another spectacular attack restarts the cycle. President Trump increases the volume and heightens the perceived stakes. The advocates of gun control, such as Elizabeth Warren, say he’s a “white supremacist.”
