CO: Springs eyes gun ban on city property
Submitted by: Anonymous

"Pikes Peak Firearms Coalition President Bernie Herpin said he doesn't see anything courteous about Ortega's actions."

" 'He is not one of us,' Herpin said. 'Nor would I consider him pro-gun. What he does is anti-gun.' "

"Still, Herpin said he opposes the city's proposed ban. That would be "overreacting to a single situation,' he said. 'If they'd ignore him (Ortega), he would probably go away. A responsible gun owner wouldn't bring a shotgun to City Council meetings, but it is a responsible gun owner's choice, not the government's.' "

-------
A law-abiding citizen exercising his rights is "anti-gun"? Mr. Herpin better learn quickly who his friends are and who his enemies are.

A woman also driving in the same area reported that her car was hit. Police discovered two dents in the driver-side door.

"More details are being disclosed about what happened on the night a 29-year-old mentally disabled woman was shot and killed by an Aurora officer last week. Aurora police released the 911 dispatch tapes on Monday."

"The tape shows that the family member who called police did tell dispatchers that Michelle Washington was supposed to be on medication for mental problems. But from the tape of the conversation between the dispatcher and another officer, it does not appear that the information was ever passed on to officers sent out to the scene."

"Gun-rights groups gained momentum for their cause this year after a series of victories at the state level made it easier to legally carry concealed weapons." ...

"Eric Howard, spokesman for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said the NRA's crowing is an empty boast, pointing to defeats of attempts to eliminate background checks for firearms purchases in Connecticut and to allow guns to be brought into churches, taverns and stadiums in Georgia."

" 'They have a very extreme agenda that anybody should be allowed to carry a gun,' Mr. Howard said."

"Most illicit arms transfers begin as legal ones. Shipments get rerouted to a clandestine buyer, or guns are simply resold. That is how the Taliban and the rebels in Liberia ended up with American weapons. Often arms brokers are complicit. The United States requires American arms brokers worldwide and foreign nationals who live or work in the United States to get licenses for every arms deal, even one that does not touch American soil. This law should be replicated everywhere, but equally important, the United States should begin to enforce it."

Eco-Criminals

"Both Congress and federal law enforcement are well-aware of eco-terrorism's destructive potential. Rep. George Nethercutt, R-WA, summed up the situation well when he asked "How do we deal with this home-grown brand of al-Qaeda?" at last year's House Subcommittee hearings, proposing improved intelligence and less restrictions on law enforcement authorities. However, many members of the media, local prosecutors and judges, university administrations, and city governments aren't quite as well informed. If they took the threat of ecoterrorism seriously, would the University of Oregon permit a conference of unrepentant ex-terrorists and career criminals, all of whom advocate lawbreaking in some form or another, from civil disobedience to murder, to use their taxpayer-funded facilities? If they took the threat of ecoterrorism seriously, would a court in Nebraska, three months after 9/11, shunt three Earth Liberation Front activists charged with felonies into a "diversion" program which allowed them to escape with community service - without even a trial, without even criminal records?" ...

"The ISRA is applauding a pair of county boards for passing resolutions recognizing the individual right to keep and bear arms. The measures, passed in June by the Shelby and Livingston county boards, affirm that law-abiding citizens have the right to possess and use firearms for lawful purposes."

"The passage of the county resolutions is seen as backlash to attempts by the Illinois General Assembly to ban the private ownership of most firearms including target rifles, black powder rifles, and all shotguns larger than 28 gauge. Senate Bill 1195, which calls for this sweeping gun ban, enjoys the strong support of Chicago Mayor Richard Daley. As of today, SB 1195 remains alive in the Illinois Senate under postponed consideration."

"Governor Rod Blagojevich turned down an opportunity to debate Illinois’ gun control laws with rock star Ted Nugent Monday night before his grandstand show at the Illinois State Fair." ...

"Nugent said he wanted to raise concerns about Illinois law that prohibits retired law enforcement officers from carrying a firearm." ...

"A similar proposal was bottled up in the House Rules Committee during the last legislative session. The measure sponsored by state Rep. John J. Millner, a Republican from St. Charles, would have allowed any retired local, state, federal law enforcement officer to carry a concealed weapon on their person or in their vehicle. Retired officers would have to have served at least 15 years, be honorably discharged and carry a valid Firearm Owners Identification Card."

..."How much respect does a libertarian enjoy in the capital? Well, that depends. If the libertarian is saying what he should be saying – that we need to abolish the state as we know it, that society can manage itself without the help of DC, that human liberty is a more productive force than power – he will enjoy very little respect and receive virtually no hearing. His ideas will have little credibility. Very little if any money or media favor is available to this person."

"If the libertarian is willing to trim his sails, to endorse a state program from time to time, or, better yet, advocate expanding the state in one area, he can expect temporary praise and attention, as a libertarian think tank did in 2001 after it endorsed the war on terrorism and the invasion of Afghanistan. This is the way Washington rewards people with souls to sell. There are profits to be had in betraying one's principles."

An officer of the Dagestani Interior Ministry department for organized crime, Yusup Abdullayev, was killed near his home in Makhachkala on Monday evening.

Sources in law enforcement say that the major was shot dead with a Makarov pistol. Two teenagers fired three shots and fled from the crime scene at 7:35 p.m. Former Duma Deputy Nadirshakh Khachilayev was killed in the city at virtually the same time.

So far, law enforcers have not linked the two murders. "They were different people and the circumstances of their murders differed," one source said. Efforts have been launched to arrest the attackers. A team of investigators is working at the scene.

"The Ninth and Tenth Amendments are two complementary statements that were meant to shackle the federal government. They haven't been used that way. You can get into an argument over when a state can have the power to do something but when it comes to an invasion of a right of the people, as libertarians we must give the presumption to the people and not the states."
