"Since 1980, when Ronald Reagan received the first presidential endorsement by the National Rifle Association, no Republican candidate has lost an election with the endorsement – and no Republican has won without it."

"In the run-up to November 2004, however, the powerful gun lobby continues to hang-fire on putting its formal seal of approval on George W. Bush." ...

"...sources close to the NRA's leadership tell NewsMax that all is not rosy between the gun group and the Bush White House."

"The main bone of resentment is over President Bush's signature on the McCain-Feingold law, which the NRA believes may have effectively neutered their political muscle for years to come."

"Four years after Al Gore alienated gun owners with his tough talk and anti-gun record, this year's Democrat presidential nominee has adopted a new strategy when it comes to firearms. ..."

"Before most voters were paying attention to the candidates seeking the Democrat nomination last year, Kerry had reporters and photographers trail him on the plains of central Iowa where they watched him shoot two pheasants." ...

"Potential voters who see the pictures might be left with the impression that the Democrat is a hunting pal of Wayne LaPierre. But the National Rifle Association's executive vice president isn't buying Kerry's use of gun imagery.

-------
And neither are potential voters.

"Now, Kerry leads Democrats in championing gun rights in a bid to reach swing-voting hunters. Worried that a weak foothold with the so-called hook-and-bullet crowd could cost them the election, Democrats have locked and loaded and changed their tune, their image, even their party platform."

"As Kerry toured battleground states in recent days, time and again he told audiences that he's an outdoorsman who embraces the Second Amendment, the constitutional right to bear arms."

-------
Sure he "embraces" it. As long as he and his cohorts get to control how, when and where we the people exercise said right.

"In January, Adam Liston made a serious mistake. Liston, 18, a senior at Davis (Calif.) High School, dropped off a few friends at school on his way to the gun range with a new shotgun in his gun rack. Someone reported seeing the gun, and the next day, the vice principal asked to search Liston's Ford F-250 truck. Liston readily agreed."

"Six police cars arrived and officers swarmed the truck. As they searched, his heart sank. He realized he had forgotten to remove the shotgun, unloaded and still in its original box, from his truck after target shooting. Liston broke down in tears as officers confiscated the gun and arrested him. He was handcuffed and taken to the Yolo County Jail." ...

"The American Bar Association says the modern zero-tolerance-for-children movement is a response to the school shootings of the 1990s. No one doubts the good intentions of those who pushed these policies; it's the enforcement that has raised concern. And Liston is far from the only victim of this noxious overcriminalization, although he may be one of its older victims:"

• In New Jersey, Hamadi Alston, 8, found an L-shaped piece of paper in a schoolbook. He used it as many 8-year-olds would - in a game of "cops and robbers" at the next recess, after which he was taken to the school office, interrogated to tears, then turned over to police for "threatening to kill other students" for saying "pow-pow" during the playground game. He spent five hours in police custody and had to make two court appearances before charges were dropped.

• In Alabama, Austin Crittenden, 9, was suspended for "possession of a weapon - firearm replica," when he brought a tiny plastic G.I. Joe handgun to his elementary school. The third-grader's principal "had to tape the gun to a piece of paper to keep from losing it," Austin's grandmother reported.

• In Georgia, a 5-year-old kindergarten student was suspended for bringing a plastic gun the size of a quarter to school. The principal backed down when a local TV station inquired about the suspension.

• In Spokane, Wash., an 8-year-old was suspended for having two tiny plastic G.I. Joe guns at school.

• At another Alabama school, two boys were suspended for playing with toy guns that one had brought in for a school project.

"Your Honor, the absurdity and unlawfulness of Denver’s 'home rule' with regard to the Second Amendment is not in question. The Bill of Rights is part of the Constitution, which is the Law of the Land. It is not a buffet from which localities can choose which rights they will 'allow' the citizens to exercise. The rights enumerated in the Bill of Rights are endemic to being free men. They are not granted by the government, for they are not the government’s to grant. They, therefore, cannot be legally infringed upon by any one locality." ...

"Rick Stanley challenged a fraudulent, corrupt law that turned him and other Denver residents into sub-citizens, less than Americans, unguarded, unshielded and unprotected by the Law of the Land – a law designed to guarantee and protect their existing basic rights as human beings and free men."

"Rep. John Hostettler (R-Ind.) pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of carrying a loaded gun in a Kentucky airport earlier this year, and apologized for the incident, the Indianapolis Star reported Aug. 11."

"Under a plea agreement, Hostettler received a 60-day suspended sentence. He will also have to surrender the gun seized at the airport, and for the next two years will only be allowed to purchase a gun in Indiana and Washington."

"Hostettler could have received a year in prison and a $500 fine."

But he didn't, because he's one of the "elite."

"The sporting media portray firearms in a positive light, but, let's face it, the general public seldom sees or reads the outdoor press. The non-shooting, non-gun-owning public needs to be told the real story about guns, gun owners and gun manufacturers."

"I am glad to call attention to a new book and a DVD about firearms and their owners that can help reach the general public in ways that previously have not been possible."

"In 'Shooters: Myths and Realities of America's Gun Culture,' (Oxford University Press; $29.95) anthropologist Abigail A. Kohn uses ethnographic research with recreational shooters to shed light on America's gun culture."

"A Warren County ship captain may carry a concealed weapon in New Jersey waters and ports, state Superior Court Judge John Pursel ruled Wednesday."

"The judge cited the post-Sept. 11 world of terrorist threats and the recent rise in the terrorist alert system as part of the reason for his decision to grant the carrying permit."

"Authorities fear the ruling could lead to similar requests from other civilians who would normally face a daunting task in obtaining a New Jersey carrying permit -- permits that are tougher to obtain than those in other states, such as Pennsylvania."

"The state Legislature prepared to vote Wednesday to keep three prisons open that Gov. George Pataki wanted to close, and lawmakers rejected the governor's proposal to establish an expensive new handgun permitting system in New York." ...

The plan proposed to "...change the state's pistol and revolver permitting system by requiring a five-year expiration on all licenses and imposing a $100 fee for new and renewed licenses. The proposal would also have required a $25 fee for each handgun added to a license and made recertification of a license subject to screening by the National Instant Background Check System."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Greene County deputies are urging residents to keep all weapons locked up and valuables out of sight. Authorities said during the past week, thieves broke into two homes and took more than a dozen guns.

Nine of the guns were stolen from Patrick Mahaffey. He said each one of the guns had a special meaning to him.

Investigators are asking for residents to notify police if they see strangers knocking on doors and asking for directions.

According to authorities, both home burglaries happened in the afternoon and the homes had their doors kicked in.

-------
While there is no direct evidence to tie in the publication of names and addresses of concealed carry permit holders with this robbery, it would be curious to find out whether these folks' names and addresses appeared in any local newspaper.

"A big, pink recreational vehicle is hard to miss, and that's exactly what the Million Mom March members hoped for when they launched a nationwide summer tour to urge support for continuation of a ban on military-style semiautomatic weapons."

"It arrived Tuesday in Eugene and attracted about a dozen supporters, including Eugene Police Chief Robert Lehner and Rebecca Lynn, whose daughter was shot at Thurston High School in 1998."

"Lynn noted that shooter Kip Kinkel had an illegal magazine of 50 rounds when he shot 27 students, killing two, in less than two minutes."

-------
Possession of this magazine obviously didn't improve this guy's shooting ability. Also note the possession of the "illegal" magazine DESPITE the ban.

"Pennsylvania's future rests in being an attractive and safe place to raise children and establish a business. Somehow, being a hotbed of illegal sales of handguns used in crimes just doesn't fit that description."

"Straw sales - legal purchases of handguns by buyers who then illegally sell them on the street - is a thriving industry in this region. Its ripple effects are felt throughout the state and into New Jersey through the deaths caused, the medical bills incurred from serious injuries, and the image of Pennsylvania as a state that is not safe from the worst kind of firearms."

"One response is obvious: State lawmakers should make it illegal to buy more than one handgun a month."

The county approved allowing guns back in public parks to bring the county under compliance with a new state law that took effect July 1st. That law says counties no longer have the authority to regulate firearms.
