Raleigh resident Chad Copley is facing first-degree murder charges in the death of Kouren-Rodney Thomas. UNC law professor Joseph Kennedy said given the facts released so far about the shooting, it doesn't appear to fall under state laws authorizing the use of deadly force.

Investigators say Copley, a white man, shot Thomas, an African-American man, from his garage while Thomas and his friend were walking through the neighborhood on Singleleaf Lane around 1 a.m. on Sunday.

A judge ruled a Louisville man acted in self-defense when he shot two brothers.

William Albright was charged with murder in the death of Cameron Pearson.

He was also facing assault charges for shooting Kyle Pearson.

This was a case in which two brothers, Cameron and Kyle Pearson, were fighting over a gun in the parking lot of a Valley Station strip mall in July 2015.

Thousands of college students are returning to campuses across the state this month, armed with dorm supplies, backpacks and possibly stun guns.

In case you missed the news and were still on vacation, working an internship or volunteering in a foreign land, Georgia now allows for stun guns on campuses.

Here’s what you need to know about the new law:

Did you know if you want to go into the woods and shoot animals, you first have to take a mandatory, two-part course in how to handle a gun?

State lawmakers decided a couple of decades ago it would be safer in the woods if hunters weren’t shooting one another or themselves. So to get a hunting license, you first have to take 10 hours of “hunter education” — much of it gun handling and safety techniques.

Nothing in that case from either side comes close to the nightmare that unfolded for the Thomas family this past weekend in Raleigh at the hands of Chad Copley.

Kouren-Rodney Bernard Thomas reportedly went to check out a party with a friend, found out that it wasn’t something he wanted to be involved in (there were no girls… I don’t blame him), and was merely walking back to his car when he was allegedly ambushed through a closed garage window without any warning.

Gun rights advocates have fired a new salvo in the ongoing saga against the District of Columbia’s overly restrictive gun laws.

Three District residents have filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia seeking to overturn a law making it a crime to “receive, possess, control, transfer, offer for sale, give or deliver any destructive device” (D.C. Code § 7-2502.01(a)), which would include “any device … intended to stun or disable a person by means of electric shock” (D.C. Code § 7-2501.01(7)(D)). They are likely to win.

This is the state of “journalism” today. Members of the media who desperately want Hillary Clinton to be elected president are stooping to unprecedented lows, abandoning all pretenses of impartiality, forfeiting whatever remnant of credibility they might otherwise have, trying to prevent voters from realizing that Hillary Clinton fundamentally opposes the individual right to keep and bear arms.

The Washington Post, to single out one of the worst in this regard, is worried that voters agree with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump that if Clinton were elected, she would “essentially abolish the Second Amendment.”

A civil rights lawsuit challenging a special, legislatively-created exemption to the “California Gun-Free School Zone Act” for retired government employees as unconstitutional under the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause is being appealed to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals following Central District of California Federal District Court Judge Beverly Reid O’Connell’s August 5 order granting the State of California’s motion to dismiss.

The lawsuit, filed in April by 11 individuals and 4 nonprofit civil rights organizations, argues that the state’s many special statutory exemptions to gun laws for retired “peace officers” are a violation of their Fourteenth Amendment constitutional rights.

Responding to the horrific mass shooting of a gay nightclub in June, a Connecticut gun maker announced this week it will provide funding for firearm training efforts for the LGBT community.

Standard Manufacturing Company, a small outfit known for producing rifles and tactical shotguns, has teamed with the gay gun rights group Pink Pistols and two tactical training companies — Empowered Firearms & Training and Global Dynasty Corps — to teach members of the LGBT community in self-defense. Standard will be paying instructors to lead classes.

We have always questioned whether it was wise to cast your vote based on a single issue that a candidate represents.

That is not, however, the case in the upcoming election. At no other time in our history has our Constitution and its Bill of Rights faced the prospect of being so misinterpreted or outright disregarded depending on the outcome of the forthcoming presidential election.

Granted, the economy, jobs, national security, and terrorism are important issues, but maintaining our Constitutional Civil Rights guarantees are the only best way to properly address those problems.

Nevada Governor, Brian Sandoval (R), reaffirmed his support of individual rights and the Second Amendment with his recent statement against Bloomberg’s gun control initiative, Question 1. “The governor does not support Question 1. He has concerns that this measure would dilute the legitimate rights of law-abiding Nevadans and that it does not actually address the complex issue of keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals,” said Mari St. Martin, spokesperson for Governor Sandoval.

TX: Open carry law has had 'little or no effect' on law enforcement

The Second Amendment clearly gives citizens the right to keep and bear arms. In fact, with various restrictions (or in some cases none at all), 45 states allow some form of open carry. House Bill 910, passed last session, took the existing law regarding carrying a concealed handgun and allowed those same license holders to carry openly in a belt or shoulder holster. But the new legislation had nothing to do with the criminal acts that led to the death of those brave officers. It did nothing to change Texas laws surrounding the open carry of long guns, the type of weapon that killed the Dallas officers and was seized from some rally participants.

Here's my only doubt about guns residing under the comforting umbrella of "law abiding citizens." The concept of why possessing a gun is approved and necessary is a far different proposition from and unrelated to "law abiding citizen."

Indeed, I am not sure there is such a thing. We all are "LACs" until we get caught violating the law, which we all will do in different circumstances. Don't deny it. I know you.

Every career criminal had at least a few years before he committed any offense. The day before he developed the first sudden and uncontrollable urge to hold up a 711, he was a "law abiding citizen."

Notable leaders of the gun control movement spoke Friday at a campaign event in Miami for Hillary Clinton, framing her election as key to passing stricter gun laws meant to reduce firearm deaths.

“We will be fighting from this day until Hillary Clinton is elected,” said Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL). “We’re on her side, and she’s on our side, when it comes to gun violence.”

TX: Texas Professors Will Learn to Like Guns. Or Else

Three University of Texas professors were informed this week that they will be "subject to discipline" if they try to ban concealed handguns from their classrooms. The warning was issued in a state legal brief connected to the professors' lawsuit seeking permission to prohibit guns in class.

It's hard to imagine a more vibrant canvas for culture war than the Texas campus-carry mandate, which went into effect at state colleges and universities earlier this month. Texas is gun country, and the state has joined a half-dozen others that guarantee campus-carry rights. But the University of Texas flagship campus in Austin is an elite institution and a liberal citadel in a state that caroms between business conservative and right-wing nutty.

His qualifications float across the screen below him. The first one listed is “Lifetime NRA member.”

“We have enough lawyers in Washington,” Evers finishes, “Isn’t it time we sent a farmer with some common sense?”

In another ad one of his competitors Matt Gaetz argues, “We can’t trust the spineless politicians. We can’t trust the lawless bureaucrats.” Then a narrator takes over, “Conservative Matt Gaetz will fight to pass open carry, kill muslim terrorists and build the wall.”

Gaetz and Evers are running against one another for the Republican nomination in congressional District 1—they’ll face another six competitors on the primary ballot.

Weld made the remarks during an interview with Revolt TV when asked by the host about his thoughts on “assault rifles.”
