Whether support for the idea will gather any momentum is another question, considering that hunters and other gun owners have a vast number of allies in the Legislature. |

Empirical evidence suggests that gun control is a "total failure" in curbing crime, the organisation Gun Owners of South Africa (Gosa) said on Monday.
"It creates a community where only the government, which is then free to abuse its power as was the case in apartheid South Africa and Nazi Germany, and criminals own firearms," said Gosa coordinator Charl van Wyk. |

Supporters of a planned Kent County Gun Amnesty Buyback program have raised $10,000 of the $50,000 they need to meet their goal.
County commissioner Paul Mayhue, who heads the committee working on the project, said the goal is to offer cash for guns taken off the streets.
"We understand that gun buybacks will not stop street violence, and true criminals are not likely to turn in their weapons," Mayhue said. |

If we could just ban guns, life would be Utopia, right? That's what the gun grabbers would have you believe. Get rid of the guns and all violent crime will be gone.
Tell that to Great Britain. Handguns were banned in 1998 in an effort to reduce violence. Two years later, handgun crime was up 40% as criminals no longer had to fear their victims being armed unless they saw a long gun. |

The Belleville Police officers sent to the Belleville Inn & Suites on Aug. 6 probably considered their assignment to be routine: Pick up for the O'Fallon Police a man wanted for questioning in connection with a theft.
But as we were harshly reminded that day, there is nothing routine about police work. Even a fairly simple traffic stop for a burned-out taillight can turn deadly in the blink of an eye. |

Someone who shoots a burglar in self-defense will be protected against lawsuits filed by the criminal or his family. The new law by Rep. Eric LaFleur, D-Ville Platte, shields crime victims from lawsuits if they use violence against criminals in the belief they were in physical danger, following a similar group of new laws nationwide. |

More folks hunt than buckle on a chin strap, and their pulse must have quickened when they heard that a professional hunting league is being launched in October, right here in our back yard.
The World Hunting Association will kick off the sport Oct. 5 at the 1,000-acre Lost Arrow Resort on the Water, near Gladwin, as eight hunters pursue deer with tranquilizer arrows and darts. |

Philadelphia Police Officer James Fallon spent many midnight shifts on patrol - not for crime, but for sex.
His partner, Timothy Carre, says he tried to warn their bosses, but nobody paid attention.
Hundreds of police officers across the country have turned from protectors to predators, using the power of their badge to extort sex, an Inquirer review shows.
Most police departments do little to identify the offenders, and even less to stop them. Unlike other types of police misconduct, the abuse of police power to coerce sex is little addressed in training, and rarely tracked by police disciplinary systems.
This official neglect makes it easier for predators to escape punishment and find new victims. |

An East Oak Cliff woman shot a man early Monday when he broke into her home a second time after robbing her hours earlier, police said. Dallas police Sgt. Gil Cerda said Gary Poole, 44, allegedly kicked in a rear window of a home in the 1200 block of Aspermont Avenue around 10:30 p.m. Sunday and went inside, where he confronted the home's resident, physically abused her and then stole $230 in cash before leaving. After the woman reported the incident to police, Mr. Poole allegedly returned to the house around 5 a.m. Monday. The woman heard a noise, got up and found the suspect in her kitchen. She pointed her gun at him and asked him to leave, but when he kept advancing towards her, she shot him. |
