Despite the Transportation Security Administration’s repeated reminders that “firearms, ammunition, firearm parts, and realistic replicas of firearms are prohibited from carry-on baggage,” last week travelers were found with a record-breaking number of guns at airport checkpoints. From Aug. 5 to 11, TSA officers found 78 firearms in carry-on bags at U.S. airports. That breaks a previous record set in May 2016, when 74 firearms were discovered at airport checkpoints, and one set a month earlier, in April 2016, when 73 firearms were found.

And as a pastor at Fort Lauderdale’s Sunshine Cathedral, an LGBTQ-friendly church, he didn’t carry a gun because he felt it would be inappropriate. |

A federal appeals court rejected a challenge by gun groups Monday to California’s requirement of a license to carry a concealed handgun outside the home, clearing the way for a final test in the U.S. Supreme Court. The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco upheld the law in June, ruling 7-4 that there is no constitutional right to carry concealed weapons in public. Opponents sought a rehearing before the entire appeals court, but the court said Monday that the request had failed to win a majority among its 28 active judges. No vote total was announced. |

Don’t mess with Jill. Not that you should mess (in this case, threaten) any woman, but this Jill – not her real name for obvious reasons – is now packing heat, thanks to a concealed carry permit. She’s not the only one, either. Mike Gibson, a former Air Force Security policeman and a veteran of the New Mexico State Police for 21 years, taught the CCW (concealed-carry weapons) course Jill recently took and said enrollment these days is about 50-50, men to women. |

Mark and William, I forgot the URL in the old summary. Can you update the submission? We know that so called "gun-free" zones cost lives. I wrote a nice letter for my local school board. Unfortunately, it is meaningless without you. You can make it powerful. It takes a few minutes during the week, but you can change lives. Here is what you do with five minutes a day.
I offer you the words, but your actions make it politically powerful. Go save lives.
On day one, look up the contact information of your local school board and state representatives... |

Home schooling taught an 11-year-old Alabama boy the value of self-defense. The boy was in his home alone when someone broke in. The boy grabbed a handgun and hid while the intruder went upstairs. When the bad guy came down the stairs carrying a hamper full of stuff, he told the boy he was going to kill him and hurled obscenities at the youth. At that point, the boy started firing. The youth credited his stepfather with teaching him how to use a gun for protection.

The July/August issue of Imprimis has an excellent article by Oklahoma attorney general Scott Pruitt on “The Next Supreme Court Justice” in which he discusses important cases and issues that will be decided by the Supreme Court. One important issue is whether the Second Amendment protects a right to carry a concealed firearm outside your home. |

Was Donald Trump calling for Hillary Clinton's assassination when he spoke last week in North Carolina? The New York Times sure seems to think so. This was Trump's apparently offensive quote: “Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish, the Second Amendment. By the way, and if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is. I don't know.”

When Georgia college students go back to school this fall, they will be allowed to carry guns on campus - stun guns, that is. Gov. Nathan Deal recently signed a bill that will allow anyone over 18 to carry stun guns on campus for self-defense. The law was seen as a compromise between Second Amendment advocates who sought the right to carry guns on campus and those opposed, including Deal.

KPCC obtained the new data from the California Department of Justice's gun tracking system, the Dealer Record of Sales (DROS). The system shows gun sales on track to surpass 2015 nearly everywhere in the state.

State Del. Luke Clippinger (D-46) said he is planning to reintroduce a bill that would prevent people on the federal Terror Watch list from purchasing a firearm in Maryland. The bill by the Baltimore delegate would use the federal terror watch list, which bans people from boarding airplanes, from purchasing a firearm in Maryland. After the shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, a similar bill was introduced in the United States Senate that would have banned anyone on a federal watch list from purchasing a firearm.

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of an American... The unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state government, but, where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people. — Tench Coxe, Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 1788. |
