Despite the Transportation Security Administration’s repeated reminders that “firearms, ammunition, firearm parts, and realistic replicas of firearms are prohibited from carry-on baggage,” last week travelers were found with a record-breaking number of guns at airport checkpoints. From Aug. 5 to 11, TSA officers found 78 firearms in carry-on bags at U.S. airports. That breaks a previous record set in May 2016, when 74 firearms were discovered at airport checkpoints, and one set a month earlier, in April 2016, when 73 firearms were found.

A federal appeals court rejected a challenge by gun groups Monday to California’s requirement of a license to carry a concealed handgun outside the home, clearing the way for a final test in the U.S. Supreme Court. The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco upheld the law in June, ruling 7-4 that there is no constitutional right to carry concealed weapons in public. Opponents sought a rehearing before the entire appeals court, but the court said Monday that the request had failed to win a majority among its 28 active judges. No vote total was announced.

Don’t mess with Jill. Not that you should mess (in this case, threaten) any woman, but this Jill – not her real name for obvious reasons – is now packing heat, thanks to a concealed carry permit. She’s not the only one, either. Mike Gibson, a former Air Force Security policeman and a veteran of the New Mexico State Police for 21 years, taught the CCW (concealed-carry weapons) course Jill recently took and said enrollment these days is about 50-50, men to women.

He looked dangerous. He looked like a suspect. He looked like he was reaching for a weapon. The officer feared for his life. This familiar litany was recited on the news more than once in this vexed summer—a time weighted with foreboding, anxiety, and grief. We are all afraid of something: terrorism, random outlaws with PTSD, ominous political forces.

Mark and William, I forgot the URL in the old summary. Can you update the submission?

We know that so called "gun-free" zones cost lives. I wrote a nice letter for my local school board. Unfortunately, it is meaningless without you. You can make it powerful. It takes a few minutes during the week, but you can change lives. Here is what you do with five minutes a day.

I offer you the words, but your actions make it politically powerful.
Go save lives.

On day one, look up the contact information of your local school board and state representatives...

Home schooling taught an 11-year-old Alabama boy the value of self-defense. The boy was in his home alone when someone broke in. The boy grabbed a handgun and hid while the intruder went upstairs. When the bad guy came down the stairs carrying a hamper full of stuff, he told the boy he was going to kill him and hurled obscenities at the youth. At that point, the boy started firing. The youth credited his stepfather with teaching him how to use a gun for protection.

The July/August issue of Imprimis has an excellent article by Oklahoma attorney general Scott Pruitt on “The Next Supreme Court Justice” in which he discusses important cases and issues that will be decided by the Supreme Court. One important issue is whether the Second Amendment protects a right to carry a concealed firearm outside your home.

As a longtime aficionado of the 1911 pistol, I am always interested when someone offers a new wrinkle to my favorite autoloader. So when STI announced a light, compact 1911-style pistol with a high-capacity magazine I was like a kid at a carnival; I had to lift the tent flap and take a peek.

Was Donald Trump calling for Hillary Clinton's assassination when he spoke last week in North Carolina? The New York Times sure seems to think so. This was Trump's apparently offensive quote: “Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish, the Second Amendment. By the way, and if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is. I don't know.”

When Georgia college students go back to school this fall, they will be allowed to carry guns on campus - stun guns, that is. Gov. Nathan Deal recently signed a bill that will allow anyone over 18 to carry stun guns on campus for self-defense. The law was seen as a compromise between Second Amendment advocates who sought the right to carry guns on campus and those opposed, including Deal.

The soaring gun sale totals — which show 554,203 firearms sales through late July — come in the wake of mass shootings in Orlando and Dallas, followed by calls for gun control legislation. The bill by the Baltimore delegate would use the federal terror watch list, which bans people from boarding airplanes, from purchasing a firearm in Maryland. After the shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, a similar bill was introduced in the United States Senate that would have banned anyone on a federal watch list from purchasing a firearm.

In response to the social media outrage over celebrities pushing gun control while making millions using guns on camera, Michael Bloomberg-funded Everytown for Gun Safety stresses that Hollywood “gunplay and real-life violence are not as intertwined as today’s tweet storms suggest.” In other words, the vocal support for an Australia-like gun ban by celebrities like Matt Damon–Jason Bourne–is to be accepted as valid, even though he makes tens of millions shooting guns at people on film.

A New Hampshire women's firearms dealings put a gun in the hands of a Dorchester, Mass., man labeled in court documents as an "armed career criminal," according to recently unsealed documents at the U.S. District Court. Though she is not facing charges, documents have identified Sara Johnson, of Manchester, as the person who sold a Glock handgun that Grant Headley, 27, used to shoot Boston police officer Kurt Stockinger in January. Officials said Johnson was working as recently as June 1 as a legal assistant in New Hampshire.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Our Founding Fathers were proud that Americans were trusted with arms because they knew that only when people are armed could they truly be thought of as free citizens. And that's where the circle closes. Those who want to deprive you of your right to keep and bear arms are intending to deprive you of your freedom, period. Like the criminals their policies encourage, these elitists know that it is always best to disarm victims before you enslave them. — Charley Reese
