The rifle was removed from its case long before dawn. The rich, walnut stock showed the wear of a 146-year-old gun. The U.S. Springfield 1873 Trapdoor is not what many would consider a good whitetail gun. Indeed, the 400-grain, .45-70 caliber, bullet is a bit heavy for most hunters, with small, fast projectiles all the rage. |

An overhaul of Iowa’s gun laws earlier this year included a controversial "stand your ground" provision. It means an individual who feels threatened has no duty to retreat before using deadly force for self-defense. Gun rights groups consider the change a victory for gun owners, but the ripple effects of similar laws in other states have raised concerns among black Iowans. Some African-American residents of Waterloo are still grappling with what the "stand your ground" law could mean for themselves, their families and young people of color.

You can have a bottle of mace, open it and use it to defend yourself on campus. Or even a small pocket knife. Anything other than that will get you in trouble. But lawmakers are trying to change that for college students. Ra'chelle Hedgespeth is moving into the dorms with a rifle she uses in the color guard. |

To understand how confusing Michigan’s gun laws are, look no further than your neighborhood elementary school. Schools are designated as “weapon-free” zones by state law. So no guns. But wait. There is an exception in the weapon-free zone law for individuals who hold licenses that allow them to carry a concealed weapon. So those with conceal carry licenses – one in 12 adults in Michigan and one in seven in some northern Michigan counties – can carry a handgun beneath their coat into a school, right? |

When the city council hastily adopted the gun tax two years ago, then-Council President Tim Burgess projected revenues ranging from $300,000 to $500,000. |

People who aren’t even gun people know about the Desert Eagle line of pistols. They’ve learned about the gun from movies (Desert Eagles have appeared in more than 500 films, bringing to question whether or not it deserves a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame), television and popular video games. But seeing the Desert Eagle on screen can’t give them an appreciation of just what the hulking Mark XIX in .44 Magnum or .50 Action Express really feels like in the hand. These guns look formidable on the silver screen, and they are just as formidable on the range. |

The first day of alligator hunting season is underway in Florida, opening the 30th year of hunting in the state. Gators were under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, but in 1988, hunting was resumed because of a soaring number of nuisance alligator complaints. Permit holders can harvest two gators and the state has sold out of it's permits for the year. |

As a kid, the idea of taking part in a cast and blast, one of those adventure-filled excursions combining both hunting and angling outings, seemed a bit far-fetched, something you could only read about in magazines like Outdoor Life or Field & Stream. I’ve since learned, however, that some locations in the Northeast are indeed perfect for these types of experiences, offering diverse opportunities to hunt, fish and enjoy the outdoors, sometimes within the span of a few hours. |
