Something made a young man go mad. He viciously stabbed a married couple twice his age, plus a neighbor who tried to intervene, deputies said. They found him crouched over the bleeding body of the man, biting chunks of his face off. Martin County Sheriff William Snyder told reporters his deputies found the suspect late Monday in the driveway of a Tequesta home. Officers shot their stun guns at the 19-year-old multiple times to no avail. Even a police dog couldn’t get the man to release his victim. Finally, three to four cops were able to wrench the suspect off the dead man. The man was “making animal noises,” and “grunting and growling” as officers yanked him away.

There's just one place in all of Mexico where you can legally buy a gun. It's tucked away in an anonymous building on an army base in the capital, staffed by soldiers. Those who enter must surrender any cellphones, tablets or cameras, remove caps and pass through a metal detector. Weapons are kept in locked glass cases, unlike many of the 50,000-plus U.S. gun shops where used-gun racks on showroom floors allow easy access and clerks are happy to let you heft an unloaded firearm. |

Serious gun guys are, by nature, tinkerers. We like to change and—we hope—enhance our firearms. Pretty soon, if our modifications are successful, they attract the attention of our shooting buddies, and usually our gun-guy pride won’t let us refuse to help them out by working on their guns, too. |

A month before Milwaukee erupted in flames and gunfire last weekend, the city’s chief of police, Ed Flynn, talked to The Marshall Project’s Simone Weichselbaum about Wisconsin’s permissive gun laws, which include the right to openly carry firearms. Flynn pointed out that Milwaukee police seize more guns per capita than any other major city — including Chicago, where gun violence has gotten much more attention. |

There are three big indicators that waterfowl hunters watch each year to try and determine what sort of hunting season we'll enjoy. The first was the wetland survey, or spring pond counts on the prairies, which were down this year and set an unsure early outlook. The second big indicator, the annual Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey, conducted jointly by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Canadian Wildlife Service, was released this past week and it tempers that uncertainty with hope on some fronts, concern on others.

After helping her precision shooting team to recapture a national championship, earning a second-place regional medal and helping break two Junior Club team records, Rachel Kimbell of Butts County is headed to college and hoping for a shot at a world cup. “I started shooting at age 12,” Rachel said. “A lot of people start at age 9 in the BB class. I started in the sporter class using light pellets. My sister Susanna wanted to start shooting and I tagged along. Susanna went to college and I had to make the decision to put enough time and effort in it to go somewhere with it.”

As far as Hillary Clinton is concerned, the NRA gets its way only by intimidating elected officials. In an interview with Newsweek last week, Clinton claimed that the NRA uses campaign donations and advertising dollars to keep politicians from doing what they know saves lives. In the same interview, her running mate, Senator Tim Kaine, blamed the NRA for “using money and influence to cause gridlock in Washington,” lamenting that “too many elected officials are scared to prioritize the safety of our communities over the profits of the gun lobby for fear they’ll lose their jobs.” |

There is something unique and romantic about the concept of a single-shot rifle. It somehow changes the mindset of the shooter to perhaps focus just a bit more on the shot. Having just one in the gun is almost a ‘gentlemanly’ statement—it speaks to a level of discipline as a marksman. Now, that’s not to say that anyone who uses a repeater is less conscientious, but I will confess to thinking a bit differently when I'm using a semi-automatic or quick-handling pump gun.

Writing in the Huffington Post Monday, self-confessed “radically-moderate” New Yorker Mark Ellis perhaps unintentionally highlights the problem with gun control, or at least its advocates.
One viewpoint of this New Yorker, whose life appears to have been spent in the Big Apple and thereabouts, along with a stint at college in Philadelphia, is that firearms have some practical purposes.
