"Project Appleseed is a rifle training course combining marksmanship with a civics lesson. 'Good shooting requires learning positive traits such as patience, determination, focus, attention to detail, and persistence,' their website declares. 'Since these skills are likewise key elements of mature participation in civic activities, we urge our students to take what they have learned about themselves as marksmen and apply it to their participation in their communities and in the wider American society in accordance with their own choices about how Americans should govern themselves.' When I heard that Appleseed was dropping in the Big Apple, I had to attend . . ." ... |

This is especially true today as we approach the 10th anniversary of the 9-11 Islamist suicide attacks in Washington, D.C. and New York City.'" ... |

"Self-defense situations trigger your natural fight, flight or freeze response. As your bloodstream fills with adrenalin you start thinking and moving a lot faster than normal. But your perception of time may remain the same. In other words, you have more time than you think you have. I’ve pointed this out before, and counseled self-defense shooters to force themselves to react slowly. Because you won’t be reacting slowly. You’ll be reacting just as quickly as you would in a less stressful environment, but doing so with more control . . ." ... |

"The column by Gary Stein regarding guns in public parks reflects that he is really ignorant of the issue, or just plain disingenuous. Or maybe a little of both. Where, Gary, did you see the Second Amendment refer to duck hunting or target shooting? ... The childish examples you offer as not reasons for carrying a concealed firearm in a park are just a few of the many I could offer for carrying one. I have carried a concealed firearm for about 30 years, both in New York and in Florida. And on two occasions, I had to draw it. Thankfully, in neither case was I required to fire it. But I know in my heart that were it not with me, I would not be at my keyboard right now." ... |

"A world-class shooting sports facility in Pasco County will bring much-needed revenue to Pasco County, and has the backing of enthusiasts throughout Tampa Bay and the surrounding areas. One of the benefits could be the only state-of-the-art, situation-realistic training course this side of the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va. But the letter writer prefers Pasco's deputies and police officers travel long distances for mandatory training and practice, instead of being on patrol. And he would rather law-abiding citizens of Pasco County, who choose to use every legal means available to defend their families from criminals, not have one of the best ranges for practice." ... |

"Watching last might’s episode of Top Shot, I kept expecting to see a crane shot of a large tank of water with a shark swimming idly from side to side. Followed by the show’s contestants on the back of a motorcycle shooting at exploding targets as the bike jumped the shark. Instead, I watched the remaining contestants run an obstacle course—some of them some of it, two of them all of it—-and then fire an AK-47 at targets 50 and 75 yards away. Feet? I really should rewind the DVR to check. I’m afraid that running Episode Two at 5X would be five times more boring, rather than less. Seriously. I’ve seen sailboat races with greater drama. Watching continental drift is a pacier prospect. Anyway, the guns . . ." ... |
