Mental Health Approach to Preventing Mass Shootings: It’s a Trap!

"I think something needs to be highlighted: the after-action reports of attempted or successful mass murderers. While the NRA hangs their hat on the 'mental health' angle, that tactic is as flawed as the 'ban guns' angle. Easy and uniform answers for these acts are unlikely. Each individual who attempts or commits mass murder is different in their approach and their reasons. Further, the NRA is starting to see that the antis can play the 'mental health' card as well ... The following article excerpt ... is another example of someone who was 'evaluated' (much like Elliot Rodger) months prior to their murderous event. But in this case, the murderer was stopped by armed intervention within 90 seconds of starting his attack . . ." ...

"Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon is sending National Guard troops to clamp down on violence in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, as noted in today’s Seattle Times, and considering the weekend’s body count in Chicago, perhaps it’s time to deploy troops in that city as well."

"While the national focus is on the single death of a black teen in Ferguson nine days ago, there seems less attention on the Windy City, where WTTM reported this morning that the weekend saw seven more people killed and 'at least 29 others wounded in shootings across the city.' Chances are that most of those victims were also African-American." ...

"Taylor Woolrich is a student at Ivy-League powerhouse, Dartmouth College, and has a great future in front of her."

"Her problem, though, is that she is not safe. She’s a stalking victim, who has been terrorized for the past four years by a 67-year-old man named Richard Bennett."

"She feels she has both the right and great reason to carry a firearm while at Dartmouth for her protection, but Dartmouth cites that its policy prohibits any firearms on campus: It’s a gun-free zone."

"'Whenever I asked them to obtain authorization on campus to carry a concealed weapon, they told me 'No way,' she said. 'No appeals process.'" ...

"They say that the customer is always right. I disagree. I won’t go so far as to say the customer is always wrong but let’s face it – not everyone is right one hundred percent of the time. I personally strive to achieve the highest rates of perfection. Sometimes there are customers who give us joy when they enter and then there are those who give us joy when they leave. Here’s one I wish had never walked in my door . . ."

"My career in the firearm industry is fairly well documented. Here on TTAG I discuss the ups and I discuss the downs, but this week I have nothing but complete and utter contempt for the industry that I’m a part of. After very careful consideration, I have come to the conclusion that the firearm regulatory system sucks." ...

"No one knows how many Americans carry a gun on a daily basis. Florida has issued the greatest number of concealed carry permit holders; some 1.2m of the Gunshine State’s 19.5m residents are good to stow. How many of those practice everyday carry (EDC)? I’d be surprised if it was ten percent. Why? I’m not sure. But I can guess. In the interest of increasing those numbers, to protect innocent life and Americans’ natural, civil and Constitutional right to keep and bear arms, here are three reasons people don’t carry a gun on a daily basis, and how to surmount them . . ." ...

"For Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, every day is opposite’s day. If you or I were lobbying to Kroger’s supermarket chain to allow legal carry in their stores – which they already do – we’d highlight incidents where Kroger disarmed customers and employees were victims of violent crime. See? we’d say. A no-guns policy leaves innocent Americans relatively defenseless against criminal predation. Over at huffingtonpost.com, Moms jefe Shannon Watts uses these real-world incidents as proof that Kroger shouldn’t allow legal carry in their stores. Huh? you say. Here it is from the horse’s mouth . . ." ...

"One of my heroes, Jim Brady, was murdered on August 4. More than 30 years ago, when John Hinckley attempted to assassinate then President Ronald Reagan, one of his bullets hit Brady ... The bullet that passed through Brady’s brain left him with severe limitations and constant pain."

"But in the years following, he and his wife Sarah, became passionate and tireless in their efforts to get legislation passed that would help prevent gun violence. Those efforts achieved the passage of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act signed into law by Bill Clinton in 1993. The law requires every licensed gun dealer to do a background check on buyers and has blocked an estimated 2 million prohibited gun purchases and helped save countless lives." ...

"There are far too many loose guns floating around the United States of America. What are we doing? This is not the world our forefathers conceived when they wrote the Second Amendment. Violence begets violence, and with no reasonable measures for arms control, our country is rapidly becoming militarized. The police are reacting to threats. Every angry or troubled soul could be carrying a concealed weapon and usually is. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we have the right to bear arms per the Second Amendment, but that was signed into law way before assault rifles were even a glimmer on the horizon. We are at an impasse in our country, society and culture, and must find a way to resolution." ...

... "The case is just beginning, but it already looks like it may evolve into a constitutional battle over Second Amendment rights. Lintner's lawyer, Louis Nappen, who is known for supporting gun rights, suggests that he may use the case to make the point that there are no constitutional limits to how many firearms an individual can own."

"... A more immediate question is whether police did the right thing when they seized Lintner's weapons. We think they did."

"One reason was the safety of Lintner and his wife. Lintner's lawyer argues that his client was the victim of a domestic incident, and, as such, his firearms should not have been taken. But that misses the point. As long as the guns were in the home, all people living in the house theoretically might have had access to them. ..." ...

"The Second Amendment does not include an “unalloyed right” to carry guns in public, District officials argued in a court pleading filed Monday that seeks more time before a judge’s ruling takes effect and overturns the city’s ban on carrying handguns in public."

"In the filing, the D.C. attorney general’s office for the first time hinted at arguments that it might make should authorities decide to fight in court. A key point: The court has upheld the government’s right to ban guns from 'sensitive places' such as schools, post offices and libraries — and most of the District’s downtown could be defined as a 'sensitive place.'" ...
