For some reason, the 1911 hangs on. Some people insist that it’s all they would trust their life to and that it’s the greatest handgun ever made. Hogwash. Some people hear the ramblings of older shooters. During times of shortage of handguns, the proliferate nature of 1911 manufactures may make it a more readily-available choice of pistol. |

There are more shotgunners than ever these days, and with the popularity of newer organizations like the Scholastic Clay Target Program, as well as stalwarts like the Amateur Trapshooting Association (Grand American) seeing junior shooters swelling their ranks, there is a need for youth-focused clay target guns that won’t break the bank. Luckily, manufacturers have noticed this uptick, including Italian gunmaker Fabarm. The Fabarm Elos N2 Allsport ($3,125, fabarmusa.com) is a versatile 12-gauge shotgun with reduced stock dimensions that’s geared toward high school and collegiate competitive shooters, along with smaller adults. |

Nickel-plated lead shot is different from your typical lead shot in that the coating allows the shot to leave your barrel a bit smoother, gives more penetration, and can lead to easier kills when hunting pheasants and waterfowl. While this shot is more expensive than your average lead, there are definitely some benefits that make it worth the price. The main issue is the hardness of the lead inside. A good manufacturer will use a good quality lead shot and coat it with nickel. Others use a softer lead – which loses predictability, but can still have some advantages, such as less risk of lead contamination. |

City of Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has consistently demanded more gun control as the answer to the “epidemic of violence” that her city is experiencing. In an interview on July 18, for example, the mayor was clear: “the only way we’re going to really get at that problem in a profound way …is to have federal laws in place that require background checks and strengthen the penalties for people who pick up guns and wreak havoc in our communities.”

The Franklin County Board of Supervisors adopted a new resolution related to the Second Amendment on Tuesday as a response to a recently enacted state law that grants local governments new powers to regulate firearms in public spaces. By unanimously endorsing the resolution, which states that the county will enact no new gun laws, the board followed in the footsteps of the town of Rocky Mount, which passed a near-identical resolution Aug. 10. Other counties that have passed no new gun law resolutions include Amherst, Appomattox and Patrick.

A little-known Czech-made carbine, the Brno Vz. 33, was only produced in small numbers just before World War II and led to a specialized model that saw more extensive service. The new republic of Czechoslovakia rose from the ashes of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918 as part of the aftermath of the Great War. While the Kaiser's military had used Steyr-Mannlicher rifles of various marks, the Czechs didn't have the machinery to produce them moving forward. |

A three-judge panel in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court’s previous ruling that a California state ban on standard-capacity magazines is unconstitutional and in violation of the Second Amendment. In Duncan v. Becerra, U.S. District Court Judge Roger T. Benitez ruled in March, 2019, that California’s ban on magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds violated the Second Amendment. This decision was appealed by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, and has now been reviewed by a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals panel of judges. |

Bill Williams was recently forced to shoot and kill a 250-pound black bear with his Uberti 1866 Yellowboy carbine—chambered in .45 Long Colt—that invaded his Colorado cabin at 3 a.m. “It sounded like an explosion when he slammed the window open,” said Williams. “I grabbed the Yellowboy and walked to the opening from the bedroom to the living room. We don’t have a door to separate the rooms. With the front porch light coming through the windows, I could see the bear on the couch, just 42 inches from me. I cranked off the first round and hit him. He jumped down from the couch and stood up in front of me about three feet away. I shot him twice more and he fell back to the other side of the room.” |

Sage grouse numbers have remained mostly flat this year, according to data from the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. Each year the department counts number of birds at leks, the communal breeding grounds where male grouse put on elaborate breeding displays in hopes of attracting females. Idaho's sage grouse declined by about 53% from 2016 to 2019, and birds north of the Snake River have been disappearing in even greater numbers, The Times-News reports. |

Some of them are completely out of your control, such as weather, but there are times when you can really just blow it. Do yourself a favor and learn from these five hunting mistakes you don’t want to make. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
In the end, more than freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all — security, comfort, and freedom. When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again. — EDWARD GIBBON [On ancient Athens] |
