Some cops are sanctioned severely, some not at all.
Overseeing the (LEIN) system is a committee virtually powerless to punish those who have used the system's database of addresses, criminal records, license plate numbers and driving records to seek romance, revenge or an upper hand in personal, legal or political conflicts. Instead, it must rely on individual departments to deal with their own -- and the punishments they hand down vary widely. |

Burglars rammed a car into a Phoenix firearms business this morning and escaped with more than 50 weapons in a matter of minutes, police said.
KABA NOTE: Along with the black market for firearms and through home burlgaries, here is yet one more way criminals sidestep their prohibitions against firearms: brute force. |

"There isn't anybody, anywhere in law enforcement that doesn't check people out," said former Ingham County Sheriff's Deputy Ted Palmer. "If they say they don't, I'd stake you a hundred that they're lying."
"It is not illegal for any law enforcement officer to run anybody that they want to," Palmer said.

Sen. Charles Schumer's latest bill, despite the reasonable sounding name, is a proposal that deserves to be defeated: You've heard of Attorney General Ashcroft's move to force the FBI to comply with the law requiring immediate destruction of gun sale background check paperwork that made the anti-gun folks livid with rage? This anti-gun bill is their response.
S.1253 would formally change the law to allow the FBI to retain the records for a full 90 days (once again). Shoot it down!
KABA NOTE: Contact the Senate Judiciary Committee and your U.S. Senator to OPPOSE this bill. |

Liberal anti-gun woman columnist in Ohio prints significant portion of my letter to the editor... and hates every word of it.
My email response back to her: Thank you for allowing me to speak to the women of Ohio. Sometime down the road, when one of your women readers uses her legally carried handgun to protect herself from a rapist she won't remember MY name. But, she will remember the opportunity to hear the truth through your column and for that she also will thank you. |

The city of New Orleans has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to revive a lawsuit attempting to make gun manufacturers repay millions of dollars the city says it has spent dealing with the effects of gun violence.
In April, the Louisiana Supreme Court killed the suit on grounds it improperly treads on the state's power to regulate the firearms industry.

from Paul Craig Roberts: "The conservatives' war on drugs is an example of good intentions that have had unfortunate consequences. As often happens with noble causes, the end justifies the means, and the means of the drug war are inconsistent with the U.S. Constitution and our civil liberties.
Think about it. In the name of what other cause would conservatives support unconstitutional property confiscations, unconstitutional searches and Orwellian Big Brother invasions of privacy?" |

Ashcroft’s proposal must be a good idea, because Sens. Kennedy and Schumer are howling and have introduced legislation cementing the 90-day review of innocent people’s background checks.
We urge you — gun owner or not — to contact the Justice Department askdoj@usdoj.gov or 202.353.1555 and tell Attorney General Ashcroft you think gun owners’ innocence ought to be respected. He is accepting public comment on his proposed policy change until September 4. |

New and improved, from PaxUSA...
"ASK is a national advertising campaign, developed in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics, that urges parents to ask their neighbors if they have a gun in the home before sending their child over to play. ... ASK Campaign ads are now appearing on television and radio, and in print and out-of-home media. Also, ASK materials are being distributed extensively throughout the country and can be found in many pediatricians' offices and schools." |
