"Marshall, 55, is a liberal-bashing, Bible-believing, gun-toting hunter - just like many of the white men at the core of the GOP's base - and he voted for George W. Bush four years ago. But he's disgusted by the administration's environmental record, including its proposal in July to open more public-owned wilderness areas to new roads."

"Establishment politicians want to "get tough" on crime with more gun control laws, longer prison sentences, and larger police forces. Yet robberies, rapes, and homicides go down when states permit civilians to carry concealed weapons. Studies show that longer prison sentences, although costly for the taxpayer, won't deter criminals. Still others show that prohibition, whether of alcohol or of drugs, doubles the homicide rate by empowering organized crime." |

"Strong sales of revolvers and pistols during the past year have helped Smith & Wesson recapture its ranking as the top handgun maker in the United States from Sturm, Ruger & Co."
"Springfield-based Smith & Wesson had been the handgun sales leader in the early 1990s. Its rival in Southport, Conn., took the top spot after Smith & Wesson signed a safety deal with the federal government which many customers believed curtailed their constitutional right to buy guns."
"But Smith & Wesson sold nearly $82 million in handguns in the fiscal year ending April 30, a 25 percent increase over the previous year, the company reported." |

"It would be common sense for Congress to extend the three-day waiting period to permit the completion of background checks. This would prevent the guns from being sold, and save the time, money and energy of trying to recover them after sales that should not have been allowed to begin with."
------- The assumption here is that those intent on committing crimes couldn't get guns via another means. Considering that relatively few criminals get their guns legally, this would generally affect people who are no danger to society in the first place. |

"It was 15 minutes before 3 on the afternoon of Friday, July 16 when Richard Brooks spotted a white sport utility vehicle weaving south on the Robert Moses Causeway and decided to follow."
"Brooks, a retired New York City police lieutenant and part-time Babylon bay constable, switched on the flashing roof lights, pulled his Jeep Liberty behind the SUV, and radioed the town dispatcher for backup."
"But as the low-speed four-mile chase wound over the causeway, west on Ocean Parkway, then back again east before entering a gated beach community, help never arrived."
"The incident ended at 3:08 p.m. when the man Brooks was pursuing ran inside his house, pointed a 12-gauge shotgun out a second-story window and shot Brooks in the chest as he stood in the driveway. Twenty-three minutes after he first called for help, Brooks died alone on James Wilson's driveway."

"I picked up a copy of the 2004-05 Georgia hunting regulations this past week and found only a few changes of any consequence. Dove season now is statewide rather than in zones; the state has boosted the number of alligator hunting permits and opened more areas; hunting and fishing licenses now are issued yearly from date of purchase rather than for a specific yearly period; and a new law passed by the general assembly allows for residents 60 and up to purchase a lifetime license for $95."

"Retail giant Kmart has settled out of court a lawsuit over the sale of a gun to a schizophrenic Park City man who used it to commit suicide." ...
"In their 1997 lawsuit, the Eslingers had claimed the Troy, Mich.-based Kmart was negligent in selling a 12-gauge shotgun in 1996 to their son, Ryan, who used the firearm the same day to kill his pet dog and then himself."
"The couple said store employees failed to require proper identification and should not have sold a firearm to a mentally ill person. Kmart attorneys responded that the employees did nothing wrong, including accepting a passport for identification."
------- Are these people really trying to claim that somehow K-Mart employees should have known that the guy was mentally ill? Are they really going to claim that if a driver's license or some other form of identification was presented the staff could have somehow deduced that the man was schizophrenic? Are they really attempting to hold a store liable for the voluntary actions of an adult human being?
Just follow the money, and you'll understand the reason for this absurdity. |
