"DOUGLAS - Spent shells litter the ground at what is left of the firing range, and camouflage outfits still hang in a storeroom. Just a few months ago, this ranch was known as Camp Thunderbird, the headquarters of a paramilitary group that vowed to use force to keep illegal immigrants from sneaking across the border from Mexico."

"Now, the 70-acre property about two miles from the border is being given to two immigrants the group caught trying to enter the United States illegally."

"'Certainly it's poetic justice that these undocumented workers own this land,' said Morris S. Dees Jr., chief trial counsel of the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Ala., which represented the immigrants."

"The most important amendment to the Constitution is again showing that in the news today. In Gaza, there is an agreement for the land to go to the Palestinian state. Israelis are being literally carried out of their homes. The Framers of the Constitution knew that there could be a politician some day that would give in to the nature of power and start infringing on the rights of the citizens. Because of the second amendment there will never be a mass infringement like in Gaza."

"Given the novelty of such technology, it's impossible not to speculate on its future uses. Will a chip ever be able to detect cancer? Almaraz doesn't see why 'multiple bio-sensing capabilities' couldn't eventually be developed."

"One application that may be realised rather sooner is the VeriChip's use in a 'smart gun'. Firearms manufacturer FN Herstal is researching the possibilities of installing VeriChip-readers in its guns. Only the owner, who has the corresponding chip implanted in their hand, will then be able to fire it."

"The August 18 Nightline broadcast was devoted entirely to a report from John Cochran about how the National Rifle Association -- the puissant gun lobby -- pushed through the Senate a heinous bill called the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which gives full immunity to gun manufacturers and gun sellers against lawsuits from victims of crimes in which guns were used. Nightline made a large point about how the media went to sleep when this bill sneaked through the Senate on July 29 -- and, indeed, a Google search reveals almost no print coverage of the passage of this NRA-sponsored legislation. ..."

"About 17 employees are murdered every week in American workplaces by someone with a gun, making gun-related killings the third-biggest safety hazard facing American workers -- right after vehicles and machines. In fact, gun-related homicide is the leading cause of death at the workplace for women."

"Researchers at the University of North Carolina have shown that killings are five times more likely to occur at workplaces where guns are allowed as where they’re prohibited. It’s just common sense."

"So what are we doing about this? Some well-known American companies are taking action. It’s government that’s the problem."
