IN HIS SHORT story “Rattlesnakes and Men,” science fiction author Michael Bishop describes a town where everyone is required by law to own a dangerous rattlesnake. It’s a scenario that he says is no more absurd than how America treats access to guns. “We lost our son at Virginia Tech in 2007, in the shootings there,” Bishop says in Episode 322 of the Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy podcast. “I had been opposed to the laxity of our gun laws for a long, long time, and that just hardened both my wife and me on that particular point.” |

Leupold has a long tradition of providing American-made optics to the U.S. military and consumer market, and its catalog spans from truly state-of-the-art, mission-driven riflescopes to tried-and-true configurations that have been favored by sportsmen for decades. New for 2018, the VX-Freedom series of scopes updates the long-trusted configurations previously maintained in the VX-1 and VX-2 lines, and offers them at very accessible price points. The VX-Freedom family includes a wide range of popular riflescope designs, and also includes some purpose-build optics for muzzleloaders, AR-style rifles and rimfire-cartridge guns. This week, Joe Kurtenbach takes a closer look at Leupold’s VX-Freedom Rimfire 3-9X 40 mm scope. |

Do you want to be competent with a gun? Then you must be present to learn. Get some shooting buddies and learn together.
I took a concealed carry class when I first started shooting for real. The very next day, I took myself to my first defensive pistol competition. I knew no one, but I had a new gun, and fresh knowledge from the class I'd taken the day before. How bad could I be?
I was in over my head, but I met several people who were willing to help me along. I listened to the ones who treated me with respect. They couldn’t possibly treat me as an equal, because I wasn’t. But they treated me as they would any other new shooter. They welcomed me, and gave me pointers.
Eventually, I learned.

Introduced in 2008, Federal Premium shocked the shooting community with its new .327 Federal Magnum. The cartridge was essentially a lengthened .32 H&R Magnum loaded to a much higher pressure. Ruger and Smith & Wesson offered compact revolvers for this round, but aside from developing a cult-like following, it never really took off. That is until now; a decade later, it’s gaining new traction. Here are seven reasons you should consider the .327 Federal Magnum—a cartridge that was ahead of its time—as a defensive handgun ammo option. |
