"This summer, the U.S. Supreme Court followed up its 2008 ruling on Washington, D.C.'s gun law ... with another far-reaching decision overturning Chicago's gun law. In that June ruling, the Supreme Court decided that states and cities must recognize a citizen’s right to own a gun."

"In the wake of these Second Amendment cases, a challenge to Maryland’s gun laws has materialized. Three weeks ago, the Second Amendment Foundation filed suit, arguing the state had no right to refuse to renew the concealed-carry permit of a Baltimore County resident."

"We talk with Kathryn Rowe, an assistant to the Maryland Attorney General and part of the state’s defense team, and Alan Gura, counsel for the Second Amendment Foundation." ...

"The team that won the U.S. Supreme Court decision over Chicago's handgun ban ... now is arguing in another court case that such rights need to be protected diligently."

"The Second Amendment Foundation announced today it has filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the long-running Nordyke v. King ..." ...

"'This is a very important case,' said Alan Gottlieb, the SAF founder and executive vice president, 'because it could establish the highest standard of scrutiny to which gun laws around the country would be subjected.'"

"He said, 'While gun prohibitionists were upset by the 2008 Heller ruling and demoralized by our victory this year in the McDonald case, they are terrified of a strict scrutiny standard that could be established by the Nordyke case.'" ...

"This is one of those 'Excuse me, but let me see if I have this straight' situations that this column alluded to last time."

"A 10-year-old Seattle boy and his half-brothers are in trouble with the law for trying to rob an older kid on a Metro bus. ..."

"It now appears the 17-year-old intended victim had a .22-caliber semiautomatic pistol in his backpack. ... When the 10-year-old grabbed the pack and reached inside, the older teen believed he was reaching for the handgun, a struggle ensued and the pistol discharged, wounding the 10-year-old."

"Thursday in Juvenile Court ... the mother of all three suspects tried to keep her youngster out of detention, and accused the court of 'railroading' her kids." ...

"In the red rock and sand of the Arizona desert, just past the retirement villages ... that have made this sun-worshipping city famous, sits the biggest public shooting range in the United States."

"... Residents have the right to carry handguns openly, and starting last month residents ... also are able to carry concealed weapons just about anywhere, without the bother of getting a permit."

"The full embrace of firearms is just as fervent to the north in Montana, where nearly two-thirds of all households have firearms. Montanans feel so strongly about their right to own guns ... that lawmakers passed a measure last year that challenges the federal government's authority to regulate guns made and kept in their state." ...

"New technology called 'text-to-video' available on web sites like Xtranormal.com allows ordinary folks to reenact real life experiences by way of computer generated voices and animated charachters. The result allows the kind of detached analysis of an event that is not possible with a single person simply re-telling a story in first person."

"The creator of the text-to-video YouTube video below captioned the video with the following statement:"

"'This is an example of a conversation that took place on a corner near my home in front of a corner bakery.'"

FULL TEXT BELOW:

"The Americans began to sell arms as a voracious, ambitious industry, like the American arms industry. This often provokes conflicts in countries that are poor and less developed. Africa, due to the sale of arms, is in a very similar situation to that which is being lived by the Mexican people. For the arms traffickers, it’s a business to sell arms to criminals, and we need to mobilize not just public opinion against this, but unite with international public opinion to show the irresponsibility of the Americans, as much as it bothers them or hinders their political campaigns."

"Our lawyer pal over at learnaboutguns.com (LAG) blogged a Florida's DA's decision to drop charges against Megabyte Records CEO Lamar Coaston. ... 'Coaston, who was attacked by the burglar, grabbed his girlfriend's gun and fired in self defense, striking the intruder and saving himself, according to reports. Unfortunately for Coaston, he is a convicted felon, and was alleged to have violated the Florida law that bans convicted felons from possessing firearms. Luckily for Coaston, the State's Attorney’s office decided not to purse charges ... The fact that the burglary may have had something to do with a drug deal gone bad isn't relevant, I suppose. LAG identifies a wider issue raised by the case . . ." ...

... "The Great Locomotive Chase or Andrews' Raid was a military raid that occurred April 12, 1862, in northern Georgia during the American Civil War. Volunteers from the Union Army commandeered a train and took it northwards toward Chattanooga, Tennessee, doing as much damage as possible to the vital Western & Atlantic Railroad (W&A) from Atlanta, Georgia to Chattanooga as they went, pursued by other locomotives. Because they had cut the telegraph wires, Confederate forces along their route had no notice of their arrival. The raiders were eventually captured and some were executed as spies. Some of Andrews' Raiders became the first recipients of the Medal of Honor. -- Wikipedia." [link added] ...

"That's not the aim of Open Carry Inc., an activist group aggressively pushing the Second Amendment right of citizens to pack their pistols in public places, but their efforts make a good case for state lawmakers to act."

"Open Carry's mission is to assert citizens have the right to bear arms. We get that."

"Stewart then rolled footage of actor-turned-gun-rights-activist Charlton Heston, defending the NRA after the Columbine shooting in 1999. Chicago's handgun law a childish act of arrogance

"WHATEVER SPIN Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and the city council wish to offer, it is their stubborn arrogance that has resulted in more gun rights lawsuits filed against the city ..." ...

"The city's childish stubbornness is going to cost taxpayers a small fortune. Mayor Daley and his anti-gun city council adopted what amounts to a 'tantrum ordinance' that essentially spits in the high court's face. Sure, the city adopted an ordinance that – at least on paper – allows Chicago residents to own a handgun; but in reality, it is one huge 'Catch-22' that was deliberately crafted to discourage residents from exercising their Second Amendment rights." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
As nightfall does not come all at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight. And it is in such twilight that we all must be aware of change in the air, however slight, lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness. — Justice William O. Douglas, US Supreme Court (1939-75)
