Now this trip to South Dakota, while being a family trip, I decided to to also make it a experiment as well. How do people react to non-Law Enforcement open carrying a firearm in public. Especially in a National Park full of people like the Mount Rushmore Memorial. Now granted, I know that South Dakota is a gun friendly state, but you have people from all over the country visit, even some from out of the country. It also happen to be the last week of the Sturgis Rally with increased Law Enforcement present. |

I was on the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois board during the Skokie days. I fully supported our defense of the Nazis seeking a permit to march in Skokie, home to many Holocaust survivors. But thinking about Aug. 12 in Charlottesville, Va., and the abominable presidential responses, I keep coming back to the images not only of the murder and wounding of innocent counterdemonstrators, but also to the semi-automatic weapons carried by some of the Nazis (or perhaps Ku Klux Klan members, or both), although they weren’t to my knowledge fired at the Charlottesville rallies. |

Having addressed the sights, trigger and recoil management qualities of a standard 9-mm M&P Shield, it made sense to pit the project gun against the Performance Center Shield in head-to-head shooting match. The 50-round course of fire included drills chosen to test speed—from the holster and shot-to-shot—accuracy, strong- and weak-hand-only performance, and target-to-target transitions. The results were quite satisfying. |

One week to the day after the Washington State Supreme Court okayed Seattle’s so-called “gun violence tax” despite the Evergreen State’s 34-year-old preemption law governing firearms regulation, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that “cities, towns and counties have no right to enact their own gun regulations,” the Arizona Daily Sun is reporting. |

The prospect of a big sale has drawn Jerry R. Murdock from his home in North Syracuse to the 1000 Islands Gun Show year after year. “The five best gun deals of my life, I’ve made at this show,” Mr. Murdock said. His attendance includes all but one of the event’s 40 years, dating back to when the 78-year-old first attended with his father. The only time he missed the show, he said, was when he forgot its date. |

Wandering through the Western Collectibles & Firearms Gun Show at the Prescott Valley Event Center on Saturday, Aug. 19, Daniel Gilliam said he was looking for a bow case and wound up finding a crossbow for his friend. Said friend is 78 years old and can’t pull his compound bow back, but got a tag for early elk, Gilliam said, noting that the Arizona Department of Fish and Game recently approved crossbows for hunting elk. “I decided, ‘You know what? Let’s get him this crossbow so he can hunt,’” he said, commenting that gun shows aren’t a regular thing for him but Saturday he wanted to see what bow items he could find. “At a gun show, fat chance, but it happened. The universe treats me pretty well.”

John Walsh, a 36-year-old Brooklynite wearing a leather shooting jacket, tight jeans, and a gay pride button, is lying on the floor of a hotel room in rural Ohio with a World War II-era rifle, taking aim at the peephole in the door. He wraps the sling of the M1 Garand around his forearm. His father, Bob Walsh, watches him tighten the strap as he had shown him. The idea is to distribute the heavy weapon’s weight throughout his upper body.

Saturday, Sept. 2 is opening day this year for the early goose season, and a few easy, but important repairs and purchases should be crossed off your check list of things to do before it is actually time to head out to the field.

Which gun should I buy? I get asked that question and there is no right answer. To the gun junkie, the answer is “The next gun you want!” It is harder to answer the first time gun owner. To begin, buy something that fits. Your guns have to fit your body and your needs..just like your gloves and your shoes. You wouldn't have someone else buy them for you. |

Are you ready for this one? The first hunting season is just around the corner, like on Sept. 1. It seems like just yesterday that we were looking forward to the walleye opener. Yup, dove season is just around the corner, and it’s time to begin making plans. This will be the sixth dove season since the dove hunting season was approved in 2011. The first thing I would recommend is getting in a little target practice, maybe a few rounds of sporting clays or trap shooting.
