"Thanks to the U.S. Senate's remarkable but well-known lack of backbone, nations such as Albania, Croatia, Uganda and many others now will be able to call up the U.S. Justice Department and find out as much as they would like about anything you do with your computer." ...

"The issue at hand is the so-called Cybercrime Treaty, drafted by European bureaucrats and championed by the Bush administration. ..." ...

"Similarly, if law enforcement officials in another signatory nation with much stricter gun control laws than ours, decide there's some evidence on a U.S. citizen's computer in this country that they say is related to an anti-firearms prosecution, all they need do is ring up our Justice Department and request the information. It matters not that the offense in the other country triggering the investigation might not be a crime under U.S. law." ...

"This nation was originally conceived not as the United States, but as the united states - a coalition of independent nations, each with its own militia and chief executive, working together to overthrow the British crown."

"For more than 200 years, those militias - now known as the National Guard - have remained under the control of each state's chief executive. But the federal government is quietly trying to change that."

"According to the National Governors Association, someone - no one seems sure who - inserted language into a thousands-of-pages-long defense appropriations bill that would give the president the power to take control of National Guard forces in the event of a broadly-defined domestic emergency ..." ...

"More than a week after the US and UK announcements that an alleged terror plot to blow up commercial airliners flying from Britain to the US had been foiled, the official claims are unraveling. Authorities have been unable to provide any concrete evidence to back up the story that police raids and mass arrests in Britain thwarted an imminent attack that would have taken the lives of thousands of transatlantic travelers."

"Significant details, in fact, have come to light that indicate the opposite. Not only has it been revealed that no bombs were actually in the process of being assembled, but none of the suspects ... had purchased airline tickets. Some did not even hold passports." ...

... "Dear Annie: I had to laugh when I read the letter from 'Nonviolent in the Midwest,' who didn't want her children to play with toy guns. I also tried to keep my son from playing with toy guns. However, after watching him chew a toy pistol from a piece of toast, I finally gave up."

"My son is now almost 20 and spending his summer at the Rainbow Family Festival, which is dedicated to peace and love. With Aloha from Hawaii"

"Dear Hawaii: Thank you for pointing out that playing with toy guns does not necessarily make a child prone to violence. It's reassuring for parents to know."

"I like a rifle sling. I dislike hunting without one, and I really hate the occasional oddball rifle that isn't equipped with sling swivels. Not everyone agrees. I know many African professional hunters who abhor slings. These guys carry a bigbore rifle sort of like I carry my cell phone. They want it ready at all times and aren't comfortable having it slung over a shoulder and thus even a half-second out of reach--and they don't want the temptation to carry it that way. In their situation and occupation they are correct." ...

"Me, I'm lazy, and I like to carry the rifle slung when I'm not going to need it anytime soon. There are, of course, times when the rifle really should be in your hands ..." ...

"This is in response to the Your Turn commentary Aug. 12 by Diane Barde of the Brady Campaign to promote a police state."

"If a person such as Barde does not want to protect herself or her family, that is perfectly fine, but why should law-abiding, free people who do want to protect themselves have to ask permission to do so?"

"Why shouldn't criminals live in fear instead of the good guys? Many cities in the Bay Area have astronomical murder rates. Why should a law-abiding citizen have to be unprotected? Why should I have to wear a Timex instead of a Rolex because the county sheriff or the state will not allow citizens the dignity of self protection?" ...

"A front-page story in today's New York Times details how Arizona Senator John McCain is 'locking up a cast of top-shelf Republican strategists, policy experts, fund-raisers, and donors' in an effort to put his bid for the Republican Presidential nomination ahead of the pack. Among the strategists joining McCain's team is former National Rifle Association top lobbyist James Jay Baker, now with a private Washington lobbying firm."

"Baker's addition to this 'growing kitchen cabinet' exposes one of McCain's most glaring weaknesses in his efforts to appeal to the Republican base necessary to secure the nomination: McCain has a very big problem with the pro-gun vote. They think he's a weasel and a turncoat." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Montville Mayor Joseph Jaskiewicz is withdrawing a proposed ordinance regulating target shooting.

About 175 people attended a town council meeting last week in opposition to Jaskiewicz’s proposal, which has gained the attention of the National Rifle Association.

Jaskiewicz proposed the ordinance after it was discovered the state regulates hunting, but not target shooting. It also came shortly after John Dufrat, chief warden of the Milo Light Nature Preserve, became concerned about a neighbor's increased shooting near the preserve.

In withdrawing the ordinance, Jaskiewicz said "this ordinance was drafted with the intent of assuring the public's safety with respect to target shooting, certainly never to take anyone’s rights away."

"City officials in Columbus have decided to keep a local law in place which bans carrying concealed weapons of all kinds with city limits."

"The action was in line with a request by Police Chief William Gumm to leave the ordinance unchanged."

"In January a new state law will allow qualified Nebraskans to apply for permits to carry concealed handguns. However, it leaves in place the authority of cities to further regulate or ban concealed weapons within their boundaries."

"Several Columbus officials said they wanted to see how the 'concealed carry' law would impact other cities of similar size." ...

"Mr. Olson quoted: 'the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed' and concluded that the Second Amendment is clearly in favor of gun control. That one has me scratching my head."

"Gun control advocates like Mr .Olson love to throw around crime statistics as proof that there is a gun problem in this country, when in actuality, they only prove our country has a crime problem, that criminals like using guns, and that our governments, justice systems, and law enforcement agencies have failed to adequately control crime. What Mr. Olson of course failed to mention, was that criminals commit crimes using ILLEGAL firearms. Law abiding citizens and their legally owned firearms, are not the problem." ...

"After hearing testimony that was emotional, even tearful, the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission on Friday approved issuing up to 25 free hunting tags to be used by terminally ill youngsters." ...

"We are all familiar with various groups that provide special trips for very ill or terminally ill young people. Many such groups will not include hunting trips in their agenda. It is great to see Hunt of a Lifetime filling that void and making something special happen for these youth. The people involved in this effort certainly deserve a hearty thank you and a gold star in Heaven." ...

"In 1980, Kimber of Oregon introduced their famous Model 82. It was billed as an 'adult-sized, high-quality .22 rifle,' and greeted with a mixture of admiration, disbelief and no small amount of cynicism." ...

"The subject here, however, isn’t Kimber but the high-quality .22, a contradiction in terms in the eyes of most shooters today, especially younger ones who’ve never seen a .22 rifle or handgun that wasn’t a cheaply made 'youth' model bolt action or a hammered-out semiauto. Even today’s target pistols aren’t in the same class as those of the 1950s, at least in terms of machining and finishing. Accurate they may be, but works of art they are not." ...

"The yellow stickers stood out like wildflowers in the forest."

"'I Support Sunday Hunting,' they proclaimed on the shirts of many patrons at the Virginia Outdoor Sportsman Show last weekend."

"Butch Ammon went beyond stickers with a T-shirt that was more like a billboard."

"'I Support Sunday Hunting. How About You?' the front said."

"The back listed things you can do on Sunday -- go fishing, boating, target shooting -- but not hunting."

"Not everyone embraced Ammon's message warmly, but that is a measure of the heat the issue generates, not only among outdoor sportsmen but also with the public."

And the debate is definitely bubbling." ...
