... "Charlie had never joined the army. Those few who knew him thought that was probably a good thing. . . .In the peacetime Army, Charlie Quintard would have been an abject failure as a soldier."
"In a war, well, somewhere in those Cherokee genes of his lurked a warrior."
"Charlie had learned that about himself. . . And there was something else that Charlie Quintard had learned. There are no obsolete weapons. There are only obsolete ways of employing them - obsolete tactics, if you will. An English longbowman of the 14th Century, if transplanted to the 21st, could still kill a man at distance. He just wouldn't stand in a row in an open field to do it like he had at Agincourt or Crecy." ... |

... "If a DC blowhard wants to pass a bill with no other motive than to get his name appended to a piece of legislation, he can always blather on about the threat of 'assault weapons.' He almost certainly doesn't know the difference between a nonfunctional lever-action carbine reproduction and an actual assault weapon. Likely, neither does the reporter snooping for a scoop."
"But it doesn't matter. It plays well on the floor of the House, in the gun-hater's handout, and in the pages of the Hometown Herald." ... |

"Today, the American Hunters and Shooters Association (AHSA) released a report, 'Slash and Burn: Why Does the National Rifle Association Leadership Support Congress's Biggest Opponents of Conservation?' ..."
"Our goal is to pull back the curtain on the ugly truth: The leaders of the National Rifle Association, who have long claimed to represent hunters and shooters, have instead overwhelmingly supported the biggest conservation opponents in Congress. We want America's 70 million gun owners, most of whom, like me, consider themselves conservationists, the opportunity to learn about the NRA's dismal record on conservation." ... |

"Having faced the opposition of the National Rifle Association to Ceasefire NJ's campaigns to reduce gun violence for over a decade, I've come to know the NRA and its ways all too well. I've been frustrated, at times, by the attitude of many non-NRA folks, who believe the NRA is an honest citizens' lobby, acting with good will and intent. Such mistaken beliefs make the NRA's job - protecting the sales and profits of the gun industry - far easier than the truth."

"Now that Wilmette and Morton Grove have repealed their handgun bans, people around the state might be rushing to buy guns in the name of protecting their families."
"But before they do that, they should think about the consequences of bringing guns into their homes."
"According to a survey by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, approximately 43 percent of American homes with children also have guns."
"Nearly 50 percent of those households with children do not safely lock and store their firearms so that children cannot gain access to them." ... -------
KABA Note: So 21.5% of American homes have an 'unsafe' gun, and according to the CDC, from 1999 to 2005 an average of 59 children a year were accidentally killed with guns. So if all those deaths were in 'unsafe' homes, 21.5% of 110 million households is 23.65 million, divided by 59 per year is about one child per 401,000 households with guns accidentally killed each year. Don't we have more dangerous things to worry about? |

"This is the latest on the D.C. v. Heller, the Supreme Court's decision on the right to bear arms under the Second Amendment. It's been a relatively quiet week, but there are some interesting developments."
"First, I saw snippet of Justice Kennedy's remarks on a panel of the Ninth Circuit conference on CSPAN at a Ninth Circuit Conference and I think Second Amendment review of state and federal laws may be more vigorous than people may realize – particularly in terms of mechanics and procedures of licensing and registration."
"Secondly, Dick Heller was finally given his completed handgun registration which he picked up and transported home on his bicycle." ... |

"The early 1980s were bad years for gunowners and the right to keep and bear arms. In 1981, the Village of Morton Grove enacted an ordinance banning private possession of all handguns within the village limits. The law was even more restrictive than the 1976 gun laws enacted by Washington, DC, and the Morton Grove ban quickly inspired similar bans in some neighboring Chicago suburban communities. ..."

"Authorities working to narrow their leads in the June 8 shooting deaths of two girls used old-fashioned legwork to come up with a list of area gun owners with .40-caliber pistols, one of two weapons used in the slayings."
"Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agents knew the caliber of the guns used in the killings, so they merely checked with area gun dealers and pawnshops to determine who had bought or recently pawned .40-caliber Glocks."
