"For the second time since 2008, bar owner Andy Kochanski has had to use a gun to ward off bandits from his bar, this time killing one suspect and on the same day that Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn and Washington CeaseFire launched their 'gun free zone' campaign, the shooting was declared self-defense."

"The outpouring of support for Kochanski in the wake of the shooting has been remarkable."

"Examiner tried to reach Kochanski to ask his opinion about gun free zones, but since he is in Milwaukee, Wis., it’s not likely he will be participating in the McGinn/CeaseFire effort. In fact, Kochanski’s Concertina Beer Hall is hosting a concealed carry class on Aug. 25, and it is already full, according to the Wisconsin Carry.org website." ...

"The 'culture war' acknowledged earlier this week by Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn and Washington CeaseFire’s Ralph Fascitelli, and discussed by this column, could not have been more clearly defined than by last night’s opening segment of the O’Reilly Factor pitting a liberal against a conservative discussing the murder of Christopher Lane in Oklahoma." ...

"Northwest readers of the Seattle Times and on-line Seattle P-I.com are reacting to the slaying of Australian baseball player Christopher Lane in Oklahoma by three teens who appeared in court yesterday to face formal charges."

"There is a lot of talk about race in the comments because the three suspects are black and the victim was white, shot once in the back and left dying alongside the road in Duncan. The Associated Press report said the suspects are from 'the grittier part of town,' whatever that means."

"The slaying – said to have been done out of boredom – is getting international attention. ..." ...

Jesse Jackson says racially motivated black-on-white murder is 'frowned upon'

"Friday's murder in Duncan, Oklahoma, of 22-year-old baseball player Chris Lane, from Australia, allegedly by three black teenagers who chose to commit this heinous act because they were 'bored,' would, one might think, provide the spark for an earnest discussion about racial violence in the United States. Some have noticed, though, that perennial race baiters Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have so far kept remarkably silent. That silence is particularly remarkable, given the high volume these two generated about the supposed racial motivation of George Zimmerman's shooting of Trayvon Martin, despite the utter lack of evidence of Zimmerman's notional 'racism.'" ...

"America was founded on the premise of freedom."

"The original founders were working at escaping the controlling government body of Great Britain and building new lives free from persecution."

"They soon created the Bill of Rights, a document meant to cement the freedom they sought and to keep those freedoms for the generations to come."

"Unfortunately, those freedoms are slowly slipping. Washington, Franklin, and Jefferson would be turning in their graves if they knew of the downhill slope America has been traveling." ...

"However, you don’t have to stand idle as it happens. You can start small by teaching others who are around your personal firearms about firearm safety to prevent any accidents from happening. ..." ...

"Bullet points: Well, that’s one way to get the point across. The National Shooting Sports Foundation is now issuing attractive little “Proud to Be a Firearms Owner” pocket cards to arm the nation’s 100 million gun owners with facts and talking points about their identities as law-abiding, safety-minded, conservation-friendly folks who also happen to be passionate about defending the Second Amendment." ...

"The rise of ‘smart gun’ technology, which utilizes an RFID interface to allow for both the government and the manufacturer to remotely render the gun useless at any time, is the upcoming new tactic used by anti-Constitution control freaks in the effort to take away legal firearms from the hands of law-abiding citizens." ...

"Troy Industries really stepped hip deep in the kimchee with their hiring of Jody Weis as an instructor in their training division, Troy Assymetric."

"Today, a day after Guns Save Life shared their new hire announcement of Weis with gun owners throughout the nation, Troy now claims Weis won’t be joining them after all."

"Irrespective of their nuanced announcement ... we’re glad he’s gone and pleased we had a hand in wrecking his new job in the private sector."

"One of our regular readers did some digging of his own and did a little research on another new member (at least until tomorrow?) of the Troy Assymetric staff. Dale R. Monroe."

"Yeah, that name didn’t sound familiar to us right away, but it did to our reader Kevin." ...

"When you make the decision to carry a gun, you’ve taken responsibility for the safety of yourself and your loved ones back from the agents of the State. The decision to use your gun in the defense of your loved ones is a no-brainer. The tricky question is whether or not to intervene in a situation where strangers are involved. As recently as this past week, RF posted a video from the First Person Defender YouTube Series in which an armed citizen had to deal with a convenience store robbery. ... One of the issues raised was the perennial theme of what duty either morally or legally an armed citizen has with respect to using their firearm to defend other people whose lives may be threatened . . ." ...

"It was the very first stage of the 2013 Crimson Trace Midnight 3-Gun. Larry Houck was on the field, tearing it up. And then the unthinkable happened: he tripped. In the darkness, his foot connected with a small plant and it sent him flying into the dirt. For a less experienced shooter, that would have been the end of the stage and the end of their weekend via an instant DQ. But Larry was able to get back up and finish the stage. And the reason he was able to keep on trucking is that he knew how to fall the right way . . ." ...

"Question: What do the National Rifle Association and the American Civil Liberties Union have in common? Answer: The determination to stop New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg from having his way with guns. The NRA defends the Second Amendment's right to bear arms. The ACLU defends the Fourth Amendment's constraints on 'stop and frisk.' Between the two, guns will remain on the street and more people will die." ...

"Americans are very protective of their Second Amendment rights."

"About 43 percent of adults have a gun in their home, and even with dramatic outbreaks of gun violence such as the Sandy Hook school shooting last year, many residents are reluctant to making big changes in the laws on gun sales." ...

"But we suspect those on both sides of the debate would be concerned about the black-market flow of weapons to criminals, and a recent study shows there is plenty of work to be done on that front."

"The [ATF] pulled together statistics from states across the country and found that in 2012, more than 190,000 firearms were reported stolen or lost in the United States. By far, most of those firearms are stolen. ..." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: Well, according to NBC News in 2009 there were about 310 million guns in the US. According to the ATF's latest NICS report there were almost 50.5 million NICS checks from 1/2010 - 12/2012. Assuming (conservatively) that only 80% of those were gun sales that's about 40. million new gun sales, giving us about 350 million guns in the US. And the Herald-Dispatch editorial board is getting their knickers in a twist about less than 0.06% of those going missing?

"The National Rifle Association (NRA) has compiled a database on gun owners, despite the body repeatedly criticizing government proposals to create such a registry, according to reports out this week."

"According to Buzzfeed, registry names were not collected with individuals' knowledge or consent but rather the result of the organization compiling them through former gun safety class student registries, gun magazine subscribers, gun show conference goers and other sources." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: Note the bait-and-switch between the headline and the actual facts? The NRA does not have a registry of guns they have a mailing list of gun owners.

"While most of the attention on Illinois gun laws has understandably focused on the new concealed carry law that we're told will some day go into effect, Illinois' forcible citizen disarmament zealots have not been shut out. On Sunday, Governor Pat Quinn signed Illinois House Bill 1189, a law that will, among other things, impose requirements--on pain of criminal charges--on victims of crime. If your gun is stolen, and you fail to promptly notify the police, you are now the criminal." ...
