Much of the weaponry and apparel on display during police action to quell riots and looting in Ferguson, Mo., doesn’t look like surplus equipment supplied by the Pentagon but rather hardware purchased elsewhere, a Heritage Foundation expert says.

Officials say the upgrade is overdue—it’s been nearly 30 years since the Army adopted the Beretta M9. D.C. is in the cross hairs of a Second Amendment fight. The city is the only place in the country that has a complete ban on carrying guns outside the home. Last month, U.S. District Court Judge Frederick Scullin ruled in the Palmer case that the law was unconstitutional and D.C. had to allow people to carry guns.

The amendment approved by the council at the Aug. 19 meeting provides exceptions to the city ordinance by allowing the firing of weapons in approved indoor firearms ranges, for military funerals or reviews, for memorial events, by law enforcement officers in the performance of their duties, and in the destruction of a dangerous animal as authorized by law. The amendment also specifies that the ordinance does not “infringe upon the statutory right of a person to act in self-defense as set forth in the Maine Revised Statutes.”

The City Council in a 5-2 vote Thursday night killed a proposal to allow guns on the greenway .
Councilman Eddie Smotherman called for the vote that asked the staff to craft a resolution that would allow gun permit holders to carry firearms on portions of the greenway and its trailheads, excluding sections that go by Kids Castle playground at Old Fort Park, Cannonsburgh Village and other areas that would be considered inappropriate. |

The city wants a lawsuit challenging its firearms ordinance tossed out, arguing that the plaintiffs' lack standing to sue and that the City Council followed the law when it approved the measure.
"We believe all of the legal claims and arguments levied by the plaintiffs are without merit," City Attorney Janet Coleson wrote in an email Thursday.
A hearing on the city's motion to dismiss the lawsuit is scheduled for Sept. 12 in Contra Costa Superior Court. |

A federal judge has denied a request by a Georgia gun rights group to temporarily allow weapons on property controlled by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, including the popular Lake Allatoona recreation area in northwest Georgia.

A federal judge has ordered the Justice Department to provide Congress with a list of documents that are at the center of a long-running battle over a failed law enforcement program called Operation Fast and Furious.
In a court proceeding Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson set an Oct. 1 deadline for producing the list to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
The Justice Department says the documents should remain confidential and President Barack Obama has invoked executive privilege in an effort to protect them from public disclosure. |

A group of some 30 African-American gun rights advocates marched in South Dallas Wednesday evening to promote self-defense and protest police shootings.
The newly formed group, calling themselves the Huey P. Newton Gun Club after one of the founders of the 1960s Black Panther party, open-carried rifles and shotguns on their evening walk along Malcom X and Martin Luther King boulevards. The peaceful activists, clad in black, according to the Dallas Morning News, chanted “Black Power” and “Justice for Michael Brown” along their route. |

As you are probably already aware, the Atlantic County Prosecutor, James P. McClain, has decided to prosecute Shaneen Allen to the fullest extent of the law.
This is in spite of the fact that, when she entered New Jersey with her legally owned, defensive firearm in her purse, she was unaware that her Pennsylvania carry permit was not valid in NJ.
While it can be argued that she should have known, her alleged crime most definitely does NOT rise to the level of a Second Degree felony, carrying a maximum sentence of *TEN* years in prison. With no prior record and no criminal intent, this young mother of two was a prime candidate for pre-trial intervention (PTI). |

Today’s Seattle Times report about the self-styled “jihadist” murder suspect in killings that occurred in Seattle and New Jersey carries tidbits that most people might overlook, but serve as more proof that gun laws, including a proposal for a so-called “universal background check,” are inherently doomed to failure.
Ali Muhammad Brown, whom the Times describes as “a self-proclaimed Muslim jihadist,” is the suspect in three Seattle-area homicides earlier this year and the killing of a New Jersey man on June 25. The Los Angeles Times is reporting today that he “took responsibility for each shooting.” He is currently being held in lieu of $5 million bail. |

After almost seven years of claiming self-defense and their attorneys tussling with prosecutors over 911 calls, half-brothers Jonathon Mena Cobian and John Mitchell Mena were finally cleared of all charges Wednesday in the shooting deaths of three gang members who attacked them in 2007.
Four times, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office tried to charge the brothers with first-degree murder, and four times judges said no. One judge found the prosecutor had committed misconduct. |

August is Teach-A-Teen-To-Shoot month and one local youth group took the opportunity to participate in a program that compliments their own goal of instilling confidence, raising self-esteem and creating a sense of accomplishment.
The local chapter of the H.E.R.O. Club, an organization dedicated to providing opportunities and activities for area youth that discourage the use of alcohol and/or drugs, came to the shooting range at Black Dog Tactical on Saturday, Aug. 16 about 10 miles north of St. Regis to learn about firearm safety. |

A home invasion ended in gunfire in a east Harris County apartment Thursday morning.
Deputies were called to a shooting at the Saddle Ridge Apartments on Woodforest just before 7am. When they arrived, they found out it was a home invasion.
Sgt. Gary Harrison says during that home invasion, the man who lives inside the apartment shot one of the suspects in self-defense. That young man was airlifted to Ben Taub Hospital. |

But in a newly released cell-phone video taken by an eyewitness at the scene and distributed by the St. Louis police, Powell is seen lumbering – not lunging. As he walks toward police officers, in broad daylight and on a relatively quiet street, he doesn’t seem to be the one threatening. In fact, he can be heard telling the officers, “Shoot me now, kill me now.” It is not possible to discern in the video whether Powell is armed though police can be heard warning him to “drop the knife.” They then opened fire, shooting at him at least eight times. |
