Lott: Canada Blames Us

"If you have a problem, it's often easier to blame someone else rather than deal with it. And with Canada's murder rate rising 12 percent last year and a recent rash of murders by gangs in Toronto and other cities, it's understandable that Canadian politicians want a scapegoat. That at least was the strategy Canada's premiers took when they met last Thursday with the new U.S. ambassador to Canada, David Wilkins, and spent much of their time blaming their crime problems on guns smuggled in from the United States."

"Of course, there is a minor problem with the attacks on the U.S. ... the government does not how many crime-guns were seized in Canada, let alone where those guns came from. ..." ...

"With the United Nations' continued attempt toward international gun ban treaties marching forward, it is heartening to finally get some good gun-related news out of the U.N. The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute (SAAMI) has recently been granted official consultive status to the U.N."

"Founded in 1926, SAAMI publishes voluntary industry quality and safety standards, coordinates technical manufacturing data, and promotes safe and responsible firearms use. Virtually all new firearms sold in the United States adhere to the approximately 700 standards set by SAAMI that are reviewed by the National Institute Of Standards and Technology."

... "Several volunteers for the Buckeye Firearms Association have since been working on this investigation, and have uncovered evidence that Ms.Toby Hoover's Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence has been raking in hundreds of thousands of dollars from the ultra-liberal and anti-gun Joyce Foundation over the past several years, and that Toby Hoover has been paying herself a nice salary plus hefty expense reimbursements ever since."

"We can also now reveal what the liberal media failed to do when examining the issue of money and influence - when it comes to funding for Ohio-based gun groups on both sides of the gun issue, Hoover's OCAGV wins hands-down." ...

"The "whereas" clauses in a resolution the Milwaukee County Board passed in June are weighty. They note, for instance, that:"

"About 2,000 people have died of gunshot wounds in the county since 1991, and about 1,400 of the deaths were homicides."

"Some 85% of guns traced to crime in Milwaukee had been transferred at least once after the weapon was originally bought." ...

"In contrast, the 'resolved' clause is mild - merely, putting the County Board on record as supporting efforts by the state Legislature 'to enact legislation that will regulate the sale of handguns, rifles, shotguns and machine guns to convicted felons and minors.' The mild language no doubt helps explain why the resolution enjoyed unanimous support." ...
