The MP38 and subsequent MP40 are perhaps the most iconic German submachine guns of the World War II era. Yet, due to erroneous identification by the Allies back in 1940, these carbines are still commonly called “Schmeissers” to this day—despite a lineage that does not tract back to the creative mid of German arms designer Hugo Schmeisser. |

In the aftermath of the swift collapse of the military of the Republic of Afghanistan, Republicans in the U.S. Senate want to know just what the Taliban have captured in terms of American-supplied munitions. With images of newly inherited fleets of vehicles, rooms of small arms, and fields of aircraft circulating across the Taliban's largely unfettered social media accounts, the GOP lawmakers sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Wednesday demanding a full account of U.S. military equipment left behind in Afghanistan.

Despite the heat and the summer time conditions, the first of West Virginia’s early bear hunting seasons will start in the last weekend of August. The early season for Boone, Fayette, Raleigh, and Kanawha Counties opens Saturday, August 28th and runs through September 6th. Typically that first early season week is in McDowell, Wyoming, Logan, and Mingo Counties. But Colin Carpenter, Bear Project Leader for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources said on last weekend’s West Virginia Outdoors, they’ve made a shift in timing this year specifically to try and increase the harvest in those four counties. |

During the late 1930s, there was much hullabaloo about the .357 Magnum; how it was the most powerful handgun in the world. D.B. Wesson ran around hunting everything from prairie dogs to grizzly bears with the new revolver, and—as is usually the case with something new and cutting edge—there was a lot of myth mixed with fact. |

Current events often create memorable new clichés and aphorisms. One such well-known occurrence took place in San Francisco during Barack Obama’s first campaign for president in 2008. He made an off-handed remark to his supporters, expressing his frustration that mid-western blue-collar voters were not reliable Democratic voters. This was the famous “bitter clingers” remark whence he denigrated middle-class voters for being unhappy that government policies weren’t able to save their jobs. “They cling to their religion and guns,” said the tolerant Barack, his voice dripping with the derisive condescension of an elitist snob, unable to fathom how 100% of the electorate was not automatically supporting him. |

The grassroots Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is taking Joe Biden to task over what it calls the “ultimate hypocrisy” on gun policy, having just allowed the Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan seize “thousands of weapons and billions of dollars of equipment” while laboring here at home to disarm American citizens. |

The Battle of Appomattox Courthouse is considered by many historians the end of the Civil War and the start of post-Civil War America. The events of General Robert E. Lee’s surrender to General and future President Ulysses S. Grant at a small town courthouse in Central Virginia put into effect much of what was to follow.
