"This country was founded on the belief that we have certain unalienable Rights. Rights that are granted to us by God."

"Gifts from God are not to be taken away by man nor government."

"Yet our elected servants have been eroding our ability to exercise our rights bit by bit for more than 200 years." ...

"Yet in order to bear arms I must take a class, stand in line for hours ..."

"And it's about to get worse."

"Washington wants to 'protect our rights' by mandating to the states that concealed carry permits must be honored by other states, just like drivers licenses and marriage licenses. And the NRA short-sightedly supports this idea." ...

"The genocide in Darfur, Sudan, is the direct result of the types of gun laws which the United Nations is trying to impose all over the world. Millions of people have already died because of such laws, and millions more will die unless the U.N. is stopped."

"Sudan is covered by a U.N.-backed treaty ..."

"This [treaty] requires universal gun registration, complete prohibition of all civilian-owned semi-automatic rifles, 'heavy minimum sentences for...the carrying of unlicensed small arms,' as well as programs to encourage citizens to surrender their guns, widespread searches for firearms ... and other polices to disarm the public."

"So with the black villagers disarmed ... and the Arab gangs well-armed (thanks to the government), the stage was set for genocide. ..." ...

... "Self-defense against criminals is anathema to the left in both Britain and the United States but in Britain the left has greater predominance. Britons who have caught burglars in their homes and held them at gunpoint until the police arrived have found themselves charged with a crime -- even when it was only a toy gun."

"Given the prevailing view in the British criminal justice system that burglary is a 'minor' offense and the fierce hostility to guns, even toy guns, the homeowner is far more likely to end up behind bars than the burglar is."

"The left's jihad against gun ownership by law-abiding citizens has produced a flood of distorted information. International comparisons almost invariably compare the United States with some country with stronger gun control laws and lower murder rates." ...

"'News reports early this week of Texas sheriffs' warnings regarding the dangers of illegal militant islamist terrorist immigration into the United States from Mexico underscore the continuing necessity of the individual Second Amendment civil right of law-abiding American citizens to keep and bear arms,' observes American gun law expert John M. Snyder."

"According to a Cybercast News Service article, 'the chief law enforcement officers of several Texas counties along the southern U.S. border warn that Arabic-speaking individuals are learning Spanish ... those individuals are likely terrorists and that drug cartels and some members of the Mexican military are helping them across the border.'" ...

"Grand Rapids neighborhoods that were virtual shooting galleries earlier this summer have quieted down substantially thanks in part to stepped up police patrols, curfew sweeps and increased community contact. The effort to stanch the violence -- dubbed Operation All-Out by Grand Rapids Police Chief Harry Dolan -- is likely to continue through September, as it should."

"For sure, there has been a cost, $96,000 in police overtime. But the payoff for citizens and the city as a whole is more than worth it. ..." ...

"After a couple of trips to the National Rifle Association for classroom and shooting instruction, the choice to apply for a concealed-carry permit turned into a decision of intrigue and uncertainty."

"One anti-gun advocate remembers when a man driving on I-66 committed suicide while on the phone with his girlfriend. The man had a concealed-carry permit, and reached for his gun in a rash decision that ended his life."

"That man might still be alive today if he didn’t have a concealed-carry permit and gun, said Jim Sollo, executive director of Virginians Against Handgun Violence. ..." ...

Submitter's Note: Except that study after study has shown that overall suicide rates do not go down when guns are restricted.

"With the support of forty-one police chiefs from around the state, the state senate today passed a bill (22-18) that will help police solve gun crimes and catch gun traffickers The bill, AB 352, requires that a new ballistics identification technology be required on all new semiautomatic handguns sold in California after 2008."

"... When a bullet is fired from the handgun, the marks are transferred to the bullet casing. So when the police retrieve the bullet casing at a crime scene, they can quickly track down the legal owner of the handgun that fired it." ...

"The legal defense of Red Rock and Yellow Man, a couple of feuding Liberty City street thugs up on murder charges, has been bolstered by 62 members of the Florida House of Representatives and 28 state senators."

"Police say a stray bullet from a July 1 shootout ... killed 9-year-old Sherdavia Jenkins. But police and prosecutors worry that the 'Stand Your Ground' law ... has complicated their case against the two men." ...

"'Unfortunately, you can't write a law that says only good citizens can use deadly force to protect themselves,' said Jay Plotkin, chief assistant state attorney in the Fourth Judicial District ... 'If a bad guy is defending himself against another bad guy, the law applies to him, too.'" ...
-------

Submitter's Note: From the bill:

"A person, not engaged in an unlawful activity, who is attacked in any other place where he or she has a right to be has no duty to retreat and has the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force ..."

I guess that means that Jay wants to define "bad guys" not as "someone who is breaking the law" but instead as "someone I don't like".

"Time remains for the Montville Town Council to act responsibly and not be buffaloed by the uninformed in the matter of target shooting. Mayor Joseph Jaskiewicz should take the lead in seeing that the matter is sensibly discussed -- or the ordinance on shooting is passed -- at the council's September meeting."

"Proposed legislation in Lansing that would stiffen current penalties for drive-by shootings is way off target. There are already laws prosecutors can use to charge shooters, regardless of where the bullet came from."

"Granted, the existing drive-by law isn't strong. But there are other relevant laws that carry heavier sentences. Increasing drive-by penalties won't provide greater public protection. The introduction of this proposal is election politics on the part of Gov. Jennifer Granholm ... Michigan needs significant legislation that is a catalyst for change. This isn't it."

"Like kids on Christmas morning, officials with the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum were wide-eyed as Polk County sheriff's officials presented them a new link to battlefield history - a World War I machine gun that was seized in a drug raid."

"The announcement happened Wednesday morning on 24 Hour News 8 Daybreak. Kent County Undersheriff Jon Hess said people will be able to turn in unregistered or unlicensed guns and ammunition for $50 with limited amnesty."

When the gun buyback program begins Sept. 7, organizers hope to have more than the $10,000 they've raised so far. Politicians and law on Wednesday said donations will help them make it clear that guns aren't welcome. "We want to support that parent who had the guts to say my son had this gun and I don't want it in the house," Grand Rapids Police Chief Harry Dolan said. On Sunday churches have been asked to urge their members to turn in weapons. Guns will be accepted at the Kent County Sheriff's Department, 701 Ball Ave. NE on Sept. 7, 8, 9 and 11.

"Do children, parks and guns go together?"

"During the last couple of weeks, I've had the opportunity to research, study and discuss with several township residents Ohio's concealed weapon law and policies. During this time, I heard various views about the topic and learned two key points:"

"Registered gun owners with training and a permit may carry their concealed weapons into non-enclosed parts of many public areas, including our state, regional and township parks. To go even further, a resident may carry a non-concealed gun into a park as long as it is in full view."

Boston Mayor Tom Menino gets a firsthand look at the gun violence plaguing his city's streets.

Menino was on a walking tour in Dorchester Monday night when a man went running by the mayor with a loaded gun in his hand.

Nineteen-year-old Adelino Monteiro was taken into custody after a brief foot chase by Boston police.

The Boston Herald reports that Menino was in Dorchester with top aides and police officials to visit an area known as a hot spot for shootings.

The gun Monteiro was carrying had a bullet in the chamber and five live rounds in the magazine. The serial number on the weapon had been defaced.

More than 260 people have been shot so far this year in Boston, a pace that would eclipse last year's total of 341.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
False is the idea of utility that sacrifices a thousand real advantages for one imaginary or trifling inconvenience; that would take fire from men because it burns, and water because one may drown in it; that has no remedy for evils except destruction. The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crime. — Cesare Beccaria, quoted by Thomas Jefferson
