A California bill requiring
handgun buyers to obtain a license after receiving firearms
training and submitting fingerprints, cleared the Senate
Appropriations Committee yesterday -- which okayed $1.6 million in
start-up costs.

"...asking a Madison County circuit judge to grant the conditional release of Lisa Ann McCrary from a state mental institution.

A grand jury indicted McCrary, 31, in March 1996 on murder and attempted murder charges. She was accused of fatally shaking one of her daughters and severely injuring the other.

But McCrary never stood trial on the charges. Her attorney, Mark McDaniel, entered a plea of not guilty by reason of mental illness or mental defect.

So much for his seeming boldness in doing the right thing. From the report:

"At a press conference Friday, Wuerch said he removed the proposal from consideration because he and the police chief had agreed on a better, "administrative" solution. He said he'd received "mixed reviews" on his proposed ordinance from Assembly members, who would have voted on the idea after taking public comment. Wuerch declined to elaborate on those views, but said Assembly members supported his new policy.

WATERBURY, Conn. (August 26, 2000 7:15 p.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) - A 29-year-old man went on a shooting spree Saturday, gunning down three people, including a firefighter who was collecting money for charity, before turning a gun on himself, police said.

The gunman knew all three victims but authorities hadn't determined why he targeted them. One victim was a neighbor and another was the mother of an ex-girlfriend.

This report also confirms what I've been emailing people all week: that S.2099 is a waste of time.

There is also a strong message here about a Waco fiasco that looks like it could possibly open up on the side of the defendants. We'll see...

In a stunning revelation, London's Sunday Telegraph is reporting in today's editions that China has as many as 700,000 troops in the Sudan and is preparing to enter that country's civil war.
