"Second Amendment activists are vowing to attend protests, prayer meetings, and vigils organized by Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow-PUSH coalition and The Brady Campaign Against Guns this Tuesday."

"'We disagree completely with their message, but we fully support their right to say it and we want to demonstrate our support by being present at their events.' said Director of Operations for The Firearms Coalition, Jeff Knox."

"Knox has dubbed the day 'National Exercise Your Rights Day' and is encouraging Second Amendment activists to not only show their support for the anti-gunners' right to free speech, but to exercise their own rights to speech, assembly, petitioning the government, and their right to Keep and Bear Arms by purchasing a gun or ammunition that day." ...

"The U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment guarantees Americans the right 'to keep and bear arms.' Some American states have enacted their own gun control regulations, independent of existing federal legislation." ...

"Gun store managers know that selling firearms is a serious business that requires extensive knowledge of increasingly rigid federal firearms regulations."

""The number of Federal Firearms Licenses, which are required to sell firearms in the U.S., has fallen 79 percent since 1994, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives." ...

"Red's Trading Post in Twin Falls has been under increasing scrutiny from the ATF because of clerical errors in its recording system. However, the gun store, which sells only about 2,000 firearms each year, cannot afford a million-dollar system for recording gun sales." ...

"The Faith Community of Saint Sabina has put up 40 billboards throughout the city of Chicago..."
"It certainly doesn't look like Snuffy Pfleger is abusing the church's nonprofit tax status to advocate specific legislation, does it? I mean, who could possibly consider this to fall under the IRS proscription:"

"In general, if a substantial part of the activities of your organization consists of carrying on propaganda or otherwise attempting to influence legislation, your organization’s exemption from federal income tax will be denied."
"Besides, the IRS is already busy, chasing down churches that post pro-life advocacy messages from their own marquees ..."

"But Snuffy's a left-wing subversive, so the rules don't apply. And never have." ...

"With a Jesse Jackson Protest against Gun Stores because some of our children were killed by criminals, liberty enthusiasts around the nation have scheduled a response this August 28th. You may see them posted at many gun stores available for answering questions."

"Author and Columnist John Longenecker had the idea of creating a Button inviting laypersons to ask just what's it all about. Aren't our liberties protected in this country? Some are..some aren't. It's certainly not automatic."

"'And what's more,' says Longenecker, 'is that some of those liberties you have to protect on your own.'"

"Britain in 1997 imposed a ban on handguns entirely. Since that time, violent crimes involving handguns doubled. ... Gun control advocates like to point to America as a violent tendencies nation and keep pointing out that other nations have a much lower rate of crime when guns are strictly enforced or banned outright. So, if you're a gun control advocate, explain the British situation to me??"

"The simple fact is that if you ban handguns, only criminals will have them. I now have a 5 day waiting period ... Fair enough. It's only fair that you find out if I'm a criminal or a mental patient. However, after you've found that out, I should have the right to purchase any weapon I want, including automatic weapons. ..." ...

"An editorial on the New York Times website echoes the Supreme Court's view that the constitutional right to free speech is not unfettered, but rather, is determined on a case by case basis. In a free speech case, the court examines the facts and balances the strong interest of freedom to speak one's mind vs. the needs of certain institutions like schools, the workplace, and even movie theatres to simply function."

"The Supreme Court has never recognized the Second Amendment as providing a constitutional right to individual gun ownership. It has been well settled precedent by the highest court in America that the Second Amendment applies only to the armed militias that at one time provided protection for our states. ..." ...

"A bureaucratic oversight resulted in plans to renovate a computer system used for criminal background checks of Pennsylvania gun buyers at the beginning of hunting season, not a left-wing shot at the Second Amendment."

"So said Gov. Ed Rendell this week, disputing claims of a partisan motive behind plans to temporarily shut down the Pennsylvania Instant Check System, which allows gun dealers to run quick criminal background checks on potential firearms buyers."

"The computer system also screens applicants for jobs as teachers, school coaches and child care workers ... PICS is due for a routine upgrade, which the state police say will require the system to be offline for four days." ...

"Eric Heyl's column about the state's decision to shut down the computer system used to check the backgrounds of firearms purchasers ... for maintenance reeked of liberal sarcasm and arrogance ..." ...

"Heyl's claim that 'blasting a bunch of birds out of existence with a weapon of choice' is a 'right' is ludicrous. The Second Amendment has nothing to do with hunting. [Hunting] is a licensed privilege, and only specific types of firearms are permitted."

"The only thing Heyl got right was his observation that state police officials should try to perform software upgrades without inconveniencing people -- which wouldn't take an extraordinary amount of technology or software, just common sense and planning. That's the real issue." ...

"A liberal conspiracy to subvert the Second Amendment in Pennsylvania?"

"That was the allegation leveled last week after the revelation that the state police plan to halt gun sales across Pennsylvania for four days next month. The reason: to upgrade the computer system that performs background checks on prospective purchasers."

"State Senate President Pro Tempore Joseph Scarnati, a Jefferson County Republican, asserted the temporary ban was little more than an attempt at gun control."

"'I am concerned that this is just another attempt by liberals from Philadelphia to limit the rights of gun owners and those who wish to become a gun owner,' Scarnati said in a prepared statement." ...

"Sportsmen's groups are justifiably upset over this blatant disregard for the Second Amendment. That's the one that says you can't infringe upon people's right to blast a bunch of birds out of existence with the weapon of their choice." ...

"Those darned "liberals from Philadelphia" are at it again, playing with people's Second Amendment rights."

"That's the take of Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati after the Rendell administration announced that the state police would be temporarily closing down the Pennsylvania Instant Check System. That's the system used by gun sellers to conduct mandatory background reviews of prospective purchasers of firearms, to prevent their sale to people with criminal records. It's also used to conduct background checks of teachers and school workers."

"The system is set to be down from 6 p.m. Sept. 2 to noon Sept. 6 to install an upgrade of the criminal history databases, according to state police." ...

"Federal agents were sifting through the weaponry of a troubled Colonie gun store several years ago when they spotted a banned, fully-automatic assault rifle propped on a shelf and listed for sale."

"[BATFE] agents would soon learn the dangerous weapon, a machine gun which could not legally be resold, had been obtained by the store's owners from an Albany police officer, Michael Romano, and that the gun was still registered to the department."

"This past weekend there were several reported stabbings in Albany. Yet not one person or group has called for an end to 'knife violence' in the city? Had four shooting incidents taken place, the anti-gun folks and others who like to use the politically charged 'gun violence' label would have been all over this."

"When a person beats another with his hands or a baseball bat, you don't hear any reference to 'bat or fist violence.' When an inmate attacks a rival gang member in jail with a shank or a knife, it's referred to as gang violence. If that same inmate was in jail for shooting another gang member, it would be called 'gun violence,' not gang violence." ...

"Senior police officers have been warning for several months that a growing number of teenagers in big cities are becoming involved in gun crime."

"The age of victims and suspects has fallen over the past three years as the availability of firearms in some cities has risen. ... Sawn-off shotguns are now being sold for as little as £50, and handguns for £150."

"Despite a ban on handguns introduced in 1997 after 16 children and their teacher were shot dead in the Dunblane massacre the previous year, their use in crimes has almost doubled to reach 4,671 in 2005-06. Official figures show that although Britain has some of the toughest anti-gun laws in the world, firearm use in crime has risen steadily. ..." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
[The American Colonies were] all democratic governments, where the power is in the hands of the people and where there is not the least difficulty or jealousy about putting arms into the hands of every man in the country. [European countries should not] be ignorant of the strength and the force of such a form of government and how strenuously and almost wonderfully people living under one have sometimes exerted themselves in defence of their rights and liberties and how fatally it has ended with many a man and many a state who have entered into quarrels, wars and contests with them. — George Mason, "Remarks on Annual Elections for the Fairfax Independent Company" in The Papers of George Mason, 1725-1792, ed Robert A. Rutland (Chapel Hill, 1970).
