The Daily Wire on Monday took a scathing verbal swipe at anti-gunners who rushed to exploit the Sunday shooting at a gamer gathering in Jacksonville, Fla., asserting that they use such incidents to advance their political agenda before all the facts come out.
“Predictably,” the Daily Wire observed, “pro-gun control politicians and activists instantly politicized the shooting before any details were confirmed by law enforcement officials because it is often in that window of time — when the facts are unknown — that gun control advocates are able to advance their agenda the furthest.” |

Despite very severe anti-knife laws, Great Britain has been suffering from a surge in knife crime. Some Britons propose making the laws even harsher. Others are offering more constructive solutions to get to the root causes of the problem. Britain’s experience demonstrates the importance of the Second Amendment. Under the logic of the Supreme Court’s District of Columbia v. Heller decision, knives are certainly among the “arms” protected by the Second Amendment. Courts in Connecticut, Wisconsin, and Washington are among those that have recognized as much, with courts in the first two states finding that particular knife controls went too far and were unconstitutional. |

Red flag laws allow police to seize firearms from private citizens after securing a court order. On this week’s episode of Bullets, AWR Hawkins talks about how such laws tempt our minds to embrace a certain degree of firearm confiscation as normal and contribute to a mentality that even impacts the way judges interact with citizens in family court. |

University of Montana law professor Anthony Johnstone assigned homework even before school started Monday, but he still got applause on the first day of class. The reading assignment? The U.S. Supreme Court opinion in District of Columbia v. Heller by the late Justice Antonin Scalia in preparation for a discussion about the Second Amendment. It's nine dense pages, and Johnstone believes the case holds for readers "a microcosm of American constitutional law." |

Newly-elected New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has banned bear hunting on state-owned public lands via executive order. The only thing stopping Gov. Murphy from enacting a statewide ban on bear hunting, something the Governor was very vocal about during his campaign last year, is the balance of power between the governor and the state game agency. Because of statutory authority to regulate hunting seasons held by the New Jersey Fish and Game Council (NJFGC), the governor cannot ban a hunting season established by the NJFGC. He can, however, ban bear hunting on all state-owned public lands. Bear hunting is still permitted on private, county and municipal lands. |

House Democrats are urging Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to make clear that a federal grant program cannot be used to buy firearms for schools. In a letter being sent to DeVos on Tuesday, 173 out of 193 Democrats in the House argue that DeVos has the authority to say no to such spending and that close examination of the law that governs the grants suggests she should.

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
As nightfall does not come all at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight. And it is in such twilight that we all must be aware of change in the air, however slight, lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness. — Justice William O. Douglas, US Supreme Court (1939-75) |
