"I'm not here to repeal the Second Amendment," Hillary Clinton promised at the Democratic National Convention last week. "I'm not here to take away your guns." Those disavowals were necessary because Clinton has made gun control a centerpiece of her presidential campaign, contrary to the conventional wisdom about the political risks that entails. But Clinton's assurances ring hollow, since it's pretty clear she not only does not value the individual right to keep and bear arms but does not believe it is guaranteed by the Constitution. |

Earlier this year, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal vetoed a controversial bill that would have allowed guns on public college campuses around the state. However, he did sign into law a measure that allows devices like stun guns and Tasers on campus. The new law allows students to have an electroshock weapon, like a Taser or stun gun, on any public college and university campus in Georgia. This is a new way for students or faculty to protect themselves if they should ever need it.

An ammunition store owner was unable to convince the township Zoning Board of Adjustment to allow him to sell firearms, too. William Malcolm, a retired captain of the Union County Sheriff's Office and owner of Jersey Sportsman on Route 9, sought a variance from the board. He and his lawyer, Christopher M. Suspie of Lacey, argued that allowing Jersey Sportsman to sell guns, in addition to ammunition, would provide a convenience to residents of Lacey who are hunters and recreational shooters.

The most fundamental goal of any people—and of any government that is of, by, and for the people—must be to protect civilization. Only in a state of civilization, in which personal and property rights are protected from the forces of the metaphorical jungle, can we truly be free.

The National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS, processed nearly 2.2 million checks last month. That represents an increase of almost 600,000 checks over the previous record set last year. It is also an increase of more than a million checks over July 2011.

Retired preschool teacher Maggie Hall said now that she uses a walker to get around and feels she may be an easy target, she wants a gun.
“I’ve never been one of those people who thought I would consider owning a gun, but now that I have a walker, I’m an easy target (for criminals),” said Hall on Sunday outside the Top Gun shooting range in Taylor.
Hall was one of more than 350 women who showed up for free gun classes Sunday. They each were able to fire 21 rounds of ammunition with an instructor at their side. The class normally would run about $40-$80 with a private instructor included.
“It was liberating. I got past my fears,” said Hall, 48, who later displayed her “silhouette, the paper target, proof of her good aim. |

An attempt by three professors at the University of Texas at Austin to keep guns out of their classrooms is a "frivolous" attempt to block the state's new campus carry law, says Attorney General Ken Paxton. "I'm confident it will be dismissed because the Legislature passed a constitutionally sound law," Paxton said of the professors' lawsuit, filed in federal court last month. "There is no legal justification to deny licensed, law-abiding citizens on campus the same measure of personal protection they are entitled to elsewhere in Texas." |

Guns may be a searing issue in American politics, but advocates on both sides say they won't be decisive in November's elections. "I don't see any evidence that important Senate races are going to be decided on guns this year, even after Orlando," said Wes Anderson, the National Rifle Association's longtime pollster. |

Concealed carry permits for firearms are at an all-time high in the United States. But what’s driving the gun rush? We decided to find out what America thinks. Twenty-three percent (23%) of American Adults say they or someone in their family have bought a gun in the past year. Sixty-six percent (66%) say most gun purchases are for self-defense. Only five percent (5%) think people buy a gun to commit a criminal act. Most Americans remain unconcerned about their safety around those who have legal permits to carry concealed weapons.

Trunk guns are rugged, reliable firearms that are stored safely away in cars or boats for casual shooting, hunting, and emergency survival situations. In the previous trunk guns list, I focused on firearms that cost around $500 or less. This time I eliminated the price ceiling to make room for a few more expensive guns. Remember to verify that the methods you're using to move firearms from point A to point B (in a locked case, out of reach, separate from the ammunition) are in harmony with local regulations.

The father of the Modern Technique of the Pistol and Gunsite Academy founder Col. Jeff Cooper espoused the importance of speed in his motto, “DVC—Diligentia, Vis, Celeritas,” which is Latin for Accuracy, Power, Speed. We measure accuracy on targets, power with mathematical calculations and speed with time. As it relates to shooting, time measurements are so small a specialized device is necessary.

The government’s top watchdog revealed in a new report that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) essentially maintained a database of law-abiding gun owners by ignoring its own policies. According to Government Accountability Office (GAO) auditors, ATF failed to remove the names of gun purchasers from its Multiple Sales (MS) database and another system called Access 2000 which allowed it to stockpile information on lawful gun owners by scouring the records of out of business federal firearms license holders.

In the ongoing battle over where guns can be banned at Texas courthouses, one county near Houston has taken the unusual step of suing a person for questioning the firearms policy at its main court facility. Waller County District Attorney Elton Mathis last month filed suit in state district court -- seeking a declaratory judgment -- against gun rights advocate Terry Holcomb over his complaint that the county is violating state law by barring guns in the entirety of its courthouse.

The Kern High School District is taking up the issue of allowing concealed carry permit holders to bring guns onto campuses. Last month, the KHSD board voted to approve the policy, but no guidelines were put in place to determine who should be approved by the superintendent to carry weapons on campuses, at school events and on other district property. Last night, the board listened to impassioned arguments on both sides of the debate. The first legal reading of the language that may be included in the directive is set for September 6.

My fifteenth birthday was one I’ll always remember. Though my parents had divorced a year or so prior, they were both present at the family get-together, and that alone was enough for me. I lived with Mom, but worked for Dad, so I got plenty of time with both of them, but it was nice to have them both at my birthday. The birthday gifts were always appreciated, but when Ol’ Grumpy Pants handed me a long, thin cardboard box—wrapped in the hasty and nonplussed fashion that most men wrap with—my eyebrows involuntarily raised.
