[T]he Saturday Night Special saga illustrates the difficulties of statutorily defining a nebulous style of firearm, particularly when that style of firearm carries with it a range of strong connotations. Disagreement over statutory definitions continues to this day, most notably with respect to firearms classified as “assault weapons.”

A sporting version of the Heckler & Koch G36 select-fire infantry rifle, the semi-auto SL8 is once again showing up in HK's catalog. The original Gewehr (German = rifle) 36 was a modular 5.56 NATO weapon designed in the 1990s by HK to replace the German military's aging G3 battle rifle. Produced in over a half-dozen variants for military sales and capable of firing 750-rounds per minute for as long as the magazine could keep up, the G36 was exported to over 40 countries besides its adoption by the German Bundeswehr in 1997.

Introduced as the first American metallic cartridge ever produced in 1857, the .22 Short was an entirely self-contained cartridge that was moisture resistant and more quickly reloaded than other firearms of the era. It was a rimfire cartridge, meaning that the priming compound was applied inside the rim of the cartridge, which ignited the powder charge held in the case.

In 1950, Remington debuted what is arguably the most iconic—and successful—shotgun in American history: the 870 Wingmaster. Then in 1987, Big Green introduced the Express, a cheaper knock-down version of the pump-action Wingmaster that could be had for half the price. Turkey, deer, upland, and duck hunters have been carrying Remington 870s afield for more than 70 years now. There are skeet and trap models for clay-target shooters as well—the first 100 straight trap doubles at the Grand American in 1950 were broken by Randy Etchen with an 870.

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson on Tuesday announced that he made good on his promise to pardon a couple who gained notoriety for pointing guns at social justice [sic] demonstrators as they marched past the couple's home in a luxury St. Louis enclave last year.

-----

Submitter's note: Even though the charges were politically motivated and a gross misuse of MO law and the grand jury was heavily misled and the prosecutor should be disbarred, the LESSON here is never point a firearm at anyone unless it is legal self defense to pull the trigger immediately.

Give this to the editorial board of the Washington Post: They made it clear what they think of those who wish to exercise their Second Amendment rights when trying to salvage the nomination of David Chipman. But by doing so, they did Chipman – and themselves – no favors. If anything, they justify the opposition to his confirmation.

There are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by the gradual and silent encroachment of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpation. — James Madison
