"It was quite a surprise for Steve Bastible to find a pink slip waiting for him one morning when he arrived at work at the Weyerhaeuser paper mill in the Ouachita Mountains of Oklahoma. He'd been a good worker, hadn't been reprimanded or told he was in any trouble, but suddenly he was walking out the door. He wasn't alone, there were 11 other employees with him, including an even more surprised Jimmy Wyatt, a supervisor at the mill who had been working there 22 years with an exemplary record."

"... They'd come to work with a gun in their truck. In an unannounced enhancement of their gun-free workplace policy, one Monday morning Weyerhaeuser had security officers go through their parking lot with a gun sniffing dog to identify and search employee vehicles for firearms." ...

"The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) and Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) will urge members and supporters, and other gun rights organizations, to join in the boycott of ConocoPhillips and subsidiaries Union 76 and Phillips 66 gas stations, and Kendall Motor Oil, announced Tuesday by the National Rifle Association."

"The boycott is in response to ConocoPhillips' federal lawsuit to block a new state law in Oklahoma that protects employees of companies who have firearms in their private vehicles, even when parked on company parking lots. That law was passed earlier this year after the Weyerhaeuser company fired several employees who had guns in their cars, apparently in preparation for an upcoming hunting season opener." ...

"The International Association of Chiefs of Police, which represents the heads of police departments in the United States and across the world, has issued new guidelines saying that officers who confront a suicide bomber should shoot the suspect in the head." ...

"The police group's guidelines say the threat to officers does not have to be imminent,' as police training traditionally teaches. Officers do not have to wait until a suspected bomber makes a move, another traditional requirement for police to use deadly force. An officer just needs to have a 'reasonable basis' to believe that the suspect can detonate a bomb, the guidelines say." ...

Battle to Save the Gun Industry Moves to the House -- Rep. Musgrave working to remove anti-gun amendment (GOA)

"Last week, GOA alerted you to legislation passed in the Senate (S. 397) that will protect gun makers from frivolous lawsuits."

"Unfortunately, S. 397 passed with some unwanted baggage -- specifically, an amendment offered by Sen. Herb Kohl (D-WI) requiring gun dealers to include a 'lock-up-your-safety' device with every handgun sold."

"In addition to imposing a 'gun tax' on every handgun buyer, this amendment paves the way for future legislation mandating that gun owners use those trigger locks. Many gun owners don't use locking devices because they want instant protection during a moment of crisis. That should be their choice."

"So GOA is now working with Colorado Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R) to get this obnoxious provision stripped out of the bill. ..." ...

"The Electronic Frontier Foundation, joined by several civil liberties organizations and online service providers, filed a friend-of-the-court brief yesterday in the case of Doe v. Gonzales arguing that National Security Letters (NSLs) are unconstitutional. NSLs are secret subpoenas for communications logs, issued directly by the FBI without any judicial oversight. These secret subpoenas allow the FBI to demand that online service providers produce records of where their customers go on the Web, as well as what they read and with whom they exchange email. The FBI can even issue NSLs for information about people who haven't committed any crimes."

On Tuesday, August 9, 2005, a public hearing will be held on a proposed Nelson County anti-gun noise ordinance that was tentatively passed by the Board of Supervisors at an "emergency" meeting held in late June. As it is currently proposed, this noise ordinance would negatively impact law-abiding hunters and sport shooters in Nelson County.

Please plan on attending the public hearing next Tuesday, August 9, and voice your opposition to the Board of Supervisors' direct attack on your fundamental rights and this misguided noise ordinance. The meeting will be held at the Nelson County Courthouse in Lovingston, and the public comment period will begin at 7:30 p.m. Please be sure to alert your fellow hunters, sportsmen, and Second Amendment supporters!

A police officer and a woman suffered minor injuries Wednesday when a shotgun accidentally discharged during a call.

Police were called to a domestic dispute at 66th Street and 121st Avenue just after 10 a.m. and discovered a sawed-off shotgun in the home.

Det. Bill Clark says one officer tried to clear the weapon so that it could be placed in the police cruiser. But it accidentally discharged into the ground and the pellets bounced up from the pavement and hit the officer and a woman.

Both are being treated in hospital for minor injuries.

A man is in custody in connection with the original domestic dispute call.

Submitter's Note: To our friends who believe that only the police should have guns: Firearms do not 'accidentally discharge' while being cleared if the user is careful, thoughtful and well-trained.
