If you live in the wilds of Northern or Southwest Alaska, the odds are high that the firearm that sustains you could well be the tool that kills you.
A new study from State of Alaska Epidemiology examining gun deaths from 2009 to 2015 shows staggering death rate for the two areas of Alaska.
The firearm death rates for Southwest, 35.7 per 100,000 people, and the North, 34.2 per 100,000, were more than twice that for the state’s largest city.
Buried in the report was a state homicide rate of 3.6 per 100,000 over the seven-year period. That’s significantly lower than the national homicide rate of 4.9 per 100,000. |

This week, Congressman Chris Collins (R-NY) introduced legislation that would shield popular rifles and shotguns, including the AR-15, from being banned under state laws. The bill, known as the Second Amendment Guarantee Act (SAGA), would also protect parts for these firearms, including detachable magazines and ammunition feeding devices.
The bill is a response to antigun laws in a small handful of states – including California, Connecticut, D.C., Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York – that criminalize the mere possession of highly popular semiautomatic long guns widely available throughout the rest of the country. |

Shayna Lopez-Rivas began advocating in favor of campus carry after she was sexually assaulted on Florida State University's campus in 2014.
"He had a knife, I had pepper spray, and even though I ran for blue lights that are scattered all around, [he was] faster, stronger and I did not win," said Rivas.
She said if she had a gun with her, she may have been able to stop her attacker.
"The way that I carry it now, I would have been able to prevent what happened to me, yeah," she said. |

It’s no surprise that a GOP Senate candidate in Alabama supports the right to bear arms. But it is surprising when the candidate pulls out his wife’s pistol to prove it.
“We carry,” former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore said at the Chambers County Republican Club’s candidate meeting on Thursday, after one woman asked the candidates about their views of the Second Amendment. |

Legislation to set up gun safety courses at Wisconsin public high schools is being blasted as “inappropriate” by state Democrats. Other opponents of the bill—including Madison psychotherapist Laurie Asplund—suggest that a gun safety course will only feed a “gun culture” at the schools.
According to Fox 6, Rep. Ken Skowronski (R-Dist. 82) is one of the sponsors of the bill that would create the safety courses. Skowronski argues that opponents of gun safety courses have things backward. He says trap and target shooting teams are already popular, and increasingly so. In light of this, the gun safety courses are a way to be sure students know how to properly use firearms before undertaking these endeavors. |

It wouldn’t be a legislative session if lawmakers did not enact some measure under the banner of protecting Second Amendment rights.
guns bullets620The measure with the broadest implications doesn’t even mention firearms. Instead, it bars state and local governments from mandating that anyone who sells any property from requiring a background check on the buyer.
The effect, though, would be to preclude Arizona or local governments from closing what’s been called the “gun-show loophole” in federal law, which says background checks are not required for sales by individuals, including at gun shows, no matter how many weapons they sell. |

I spent a day learning techniques to use a handgun to defend myself with Rick Vasquez, a retired Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms officer and professional firearm instructor at a state-of-the-art outdoor gun range in rural West Virginia.
In recent years, a growing number of women in America, particularly black women, are choosing to arm themselves. But when it comes to defending yourself with a firearm, I learned there’s more to it than just being able to shoot a piece of paper well at close range. |

On Wednesday, the Maine Legislature adjourned from its 2017 Legislative Session. Thank you to those NRA members and Second Amendment supporters who continued to contact their legislators on firearm-related legislation.
It was a successful year in the Maine Legislature for pro-gun supporters. On June 12 Governor Paul LePage signed Legislative Document 9 into law. LD 9 will prohibit a government agency or political subdivision of Maine from keeping a list or registry of privately owned firearms, or a list or registry of the owners of those firearms. While federal law prohibits a universal national gun registry, there are eight states which prohibit state-level gun registries as well. |

Rep. Chris Collins' proposed federal law to undo New York's SAFE Act didn't exactly receive a warm welcome before The New York Daily News editorial board.
From the headline — "Gunning for New York: The hypocritical upstate congressman" — to end, a Daily News editorial published Friday rips into Collins' legislation like a bear ripping into a piece of meat.
Calling Collins' bill "an abomination," the downstate tabloid argued that it's odd for a conservative states-rights advocate such as Collins to ever introduce a proposal aimed at overturning a state law. |

A 2014 Columbus homicide in which the defendant was acquitted on a self-defense claim has led to a $4.5 million civil verdict against the property owner.
That’s the total in compensatory and punitive damages awarded to the parents and estate of Markeese Hodge, whom Jerome Chatmon fatally shot Aug. 6, 2014, during a party at Cross Keys Apartments, 3816 Baker Plaza Drive.
The plaintiffs sued McCorlew Realty Inc., claiming the company failed to add adequate security measures at the apartment complex despite incidents that preceded Hodge’s fatal shooting, including a July 26, 2014, case in which three people were shot there. |

A longtime gun dealer agreed to abandon the industry on Friday to settle a lawsuit brought by a national gun-control group that argued his store should be held liable for selling a firearm to a mentally ill man who used it to kill his mother and her boyfriend in 2012.
Owner Gerald Tanso, 61, has sold his Oldsmar gun store, Lock N Load, and promised to never engage in the business of selling firearms again, said Jonathan Lowy, an attorney with the Brady Center To Prevent Gun Violence. |

A group of gun rights activists – some of them dressed in rhinoceros costumes – held a rally outside the legislature Thursday calling on N.C. Senate Republicans to pass legislation loosening gun permit requirements. They vowed to fight Republicans who don't support the bill in the 2018 election.
Grass Roots North Carolina held the event to introduce a new mascot called Squish the Magic RINO, a reference to the acronym “Republican in name only.” |

Leona Helmsley, the “Queen of Mean” convicted of income tax evasion and other crimes, is famously said to have said “We don’t pay taxes. Only the little people pay taxes.”
The same sense of entitled grandeur – that rules apply to lesser beings – pervades the thinking of many high-profile gun-control notables. For example, ex-New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg is protected by guns carried by his armed security detail, while he spends his billions to undermine the Second Amendment rights of average Americans. |

The road rage suspect allegedly approached the car and struck the passenger in the face, at which point the female driver exited the vehicle and announced that she was armed. Unfazed, “the suspect then [allegedly] approached the armed driver and punched her in the face and continued to assault her, putting her into a headlock.”
Waite said the road rage suspect kept attacking the driver, even though the driver continued warning that she was armed. Realizing there was no other option, the driver then fired one shot, “ending the fight.” |

The genesis of Don Hall’s trouble appears to be New York’s practice of cross-checking certain mental health records with firearms registrations. Hall had apparently been mistaken for another individual with a disqualifying metal health history. While the Syracuse.com article indicates the exact legal authority for the action taken against Hall remains unclear, at no time before his firearms were forcibly seized was he given a chance to answer the accusations against him.
“I was guilty until I could prove myself innocent,” Hall told the reporter. "They don't tell you why or what you supposedly did.” |
