Some people will tell you that hunting hogs in the high heat of summer is a fool’s errand – and so it can be, especially if you shoot a big boar when it’s furnace hot in the bottom of some remote, roadless, hellhole of a canyon miles from anywhere. I have been there and done that. Unless you’re a slow learner, you probably won’t care to repeat the experience.

The term “build” as applied to AR-type rifles is technically wrong. A more accurate term would be to “assemble.” Besides having fun at a hobby, more often than not the reason many folks like to assemble a rifle/carbine is to save money. I’d like to have a dollar for every time I heard someone say something like, “My brother-in-law Bubba scrounged parts and built my rifle on his kitchen table. It’s just as good as any of the big names.” |

A California Highway Patrol officer and an employee with the California Correctional Health Care Services were among the 15 people arrested during an undercover operation targeting online child predators amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Kern County Sheriff’s Office said on Monday.
A civilian employee with California Correctional Health Care Services, Ricardo Mancillas, 54, of Bakersfield, was arrested when he arrived to meet a detective posing as a minor.
California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Pardue, 51, also from Bakersfield, was arrested at his home on July 3 during the execution of a search warrant. He’s been charged with contacting a minor with the intent to perform lewd acts and arranging a meeting with a minor for lewd acts. |

Free gun lessons are being offered in the Detroit area to 1,500 women interested in learning about firearms and personal protection.
Gun advocacy group Legally Armed in Detroit has scheduled its annual firearms training event on Aug. 15-16. Sessions include a firearms safety briefing, use of a firearm, ammunition and gun range time. Registration begins Saturday.
No previous firearms training or experience is required. The Aug. 15 session will be held at Recoil Range. The Aug. 16 session is at Top Gun Range.
Both ranges are in Taylor, southwest of Detroit. Firearms trainer Rick Ector says 50 women received training during the first free event nine years ago. More than 800 women took part last year.

When Beto O’Rourke, a Texas Democrat and former presidential hopeful, was on the campaign trail, he confidently declared, “Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47.” Obviously, Joe Biden is now the Democrat frontrunner against incumbent Donald Trump. Biden, riding the wave of liberal energy sweeping the nation in 2020, adopted O'Rourke's gun control campaign promises. The only problem with such declarations against the Second Amendment is that it’ll never actually happen. Here's why. |

The owner of a firearms store says Howell Township officials violated the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution when they denied his request to establish a new outdoor gun range facility in the township. A federal lawsuit filed in November 2018 against the township is pending in federal court after Oakland Tactical Supply Mike Paige and township officials failed to reach a settlement. Last month, both filed responses to motions that further argue their cases. |

Say it ain’t so; nearly half of all Americans think the news media is “very biased,” according to a new “study of attitudes toward the press” by Gallup and the Knight Foundation, the Associated Press is reporting. According to the AP report, “Eight percent of respondents — the preponderance of them politically conservative — think that news media that they distrust are trying to ruin the country.” |

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer called out President Donald Trump's administration Friday for not knowing what's happening in Michigan and the Legislature for refusing to work with her to address gun violence.
Her comments came during a livestream conference with gun control advocacy groups Everytown for Gun Safety Action and Moms Demand Action. It was the final episode of their virtual series where they spoke to women leaders, including former presidential candidates Sens. Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren, about gun violence.

COVID-19 might be affecting nearly every corner of the Coloradan way of life, but hunting could remain insulated from the virus, a Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) spokesperson said. “Part of our challenge with predicting the pandemic is it seems things change on a day-to-day basis,” CPW spokesperson Randy Hampton said. “But at this point it does not appear there will be any impact on hunting seasons from our perspective.” |

Raw numbers from the FBI’s National Instant Background Check System (NICS) shows a new record for the month of July, and the third-highest monthly number of checks so far this year, suggesting the “gun rush” of 2020 is hardly over. There were, according to raw FBI data, 3,639,224 NICS checks initiated last month, eclipsing the previous July record of 2,197,169, set in 2016. |

The Garrett County Commission approved a Second Amendment preservation resolution during its Monday meeting. The resolution states that the county expresses a commitment to the rights of all United States citizens to keep and bear arms under the Second Amendment. Members of the public, earlier in the year, approached the commissioners with the idea. The commission first considered the topic in January and February and opened up a four-week public comment period in March. |

"What's the point in living?" "I just want to die." Those were the comments police said a man made prior to having his guns taken in the first local case involving Virginia’s new "red flag" law. The case was adjudicated on Monday in Winchester Circuit Court. The 45-year-old Winchester man made the suicidal threats while in possession of a pistol on July 17, according to police. He voluntarily surrendered three guns to police and will not be allowed to possess guns until at least Jan. 30. The man didn't attend the hearing on the "substantial risk order," according to Marc Abrams, Winchester commonwealth's attorney. The Winchester Star isn't naming the man because he hasn't been charged with a crime.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought with it an increase in gun and ammo sales, and now first time gun owners are seeking out training. As we reported in March, guns and ammo have been flying off the shelves this year. Snake River concealment, offers firearm training as well as their popular classes for the Idaho Enhanced Concealed Carry Licenses. They told us the need for their services are seeing a steady increase, and the amount of students they are getting in each class has is some cases doubled.

Culpeper County has approved another resolution stating its opposition to any infringement of gun rights for local citizens and visitors alike. At its meeting Tuesday morning, the Board of Supervisors almost unanimously approved the document recommended for adoption last month by Culpeper County Sheriff Scott Jenkins. The resolution is in response to a new state law, effective July 1, giving localities the ability to further regulate the carrying of firearms on public property, according to County Administrator John Egertson.
