A new constitutional amendment protecting gun rights in Iowa has left the state's highest court deeply divided, several recent rulings show.

Iowa voters passed a referendum in 2022 that added explicit protections for the right to bear arms to the Iowa Constitution. Three years later, the first challenges under that amendment have begun to reach the Iowa Supreme Court, which ruled on four cases three by a 4-3 margin in its recently concluded 2024-25 term.
