"The federal ban on assault weapons is set to expire in just over a month."

"And Louisville congresswoman Anne Northup says she doesn't expect the ban to be renewed."

"The assault weapons ban went into effect in 1994 but it will expire on September 13th."

"Gun control advocates say if it expires, American's will be exposed to un-necessary violence. Gun supporters believe the ban infringes on their right to bear arms." ...
-------

KABA Note: Actually Tom Diaz of the VPC said on NPR "If the existing assault weapons ban expires, I personally do not believe it will make one whit of difference one way or another in terms of our objective, which is reducing death and injury and getting a particularly lethal class of firearms off the streets. So if it doesn't pass, it doesn't pass." and many others have made similar comments.

"Why is the anti-gun lobby willing to make itself such an easy target? In passing along misleading information, as it recently did in Vancouver, the worthy, supportable cause for responsible gun ownership and laws is weakened."

"A July press conference at Vancouver City Hall highlighted the ASK program, which encourages parents to ask other parents if they have guns in the house before allowing their children to come over for a play date. The program also stresses the use of gun locks." ...

"What isn't fine is when its promoters mislead people in trying to make their point."

"Then, in the context that asking about guns in friends' homes saves lives, Vancouver Police Chief Brian Martinek said that 12 Clark County children were killed by firearms between 1997 and 2001." ...

Not surprisingly, none of those "children" were shot accidentally, and none were under 15.

"When Patricia Berg phoned Anne Arundel County Police last Thursday to report a possible prowler, the Glen Burnie resident thought she would receive help, and fast."

"But before local authorities could respond to her call for assistance, Berg had to wait a few moments - for a tired 911 call-taker to finish his nap."

"According to police records, Berg's emergency call about 2:45 a.m. July 29 was delayed for one minute and 42 seconds as Louis Gerber, one of the county's 911 call-takers, fell asleep and snored into the phone." ...

"We would like to correct the record. We checked our records, and our research indicates the following:"

"1) In our record checks from 1998 to present, Mr. Sollo has not been enrolled in any of the NRA safety classes at the NRA range."

"2) Based on records checked from 1994 to present, Mr. Sollo has never been approved for an NRA Range Badge, which is required to enter and shoot on the NRA range for safety classes."

"It had it all -- accuracy, ease of use, and a revolutionary 'caseless ammunition' system that might have changed the way rifles are made -- but the Heckler & Koch G11 rifle was never put into mass production. What happened to this unique rifle?"

"Some of the most interesting innovations in military technology are never implemented -- not because the innovation was a bad idea to start with, or due to design flaws, but simply due to bad timing. Case in point: the revolutionary Heckler & Koch G11, a rifle that used unprecedented 'caseless ammunition,' as well as advanced aiming and recoil-less firing capabilities. Its only sin? It was ready for action in a period of political unification and cost-cutting measures." ...
